For the first time in military history, The Vietnam conflict was truly a helicopter war. Helicopters had been used before in battle but not as extensively as in Vietnam. The Army depended on the fearless, independent Air Cav pilots and their Helicopters for troop transport, fire support, scouting, rescue, medical evacuation of battlefield casualties as well as other numerous responsibilities. Many of these pilots were shot down, rescued and immediately returned to battle in other Helicopters.
