Lars Ulrich originally dreamed of becoming a professional tennis player like his father. Coincidentally, it was his father who introduced him to rock and roll when he won a pair of tickets to a Deep Purple concert and took his son along. It was tennis, however, that took Lars to the US, to a tennis academy in Florida. Too late for Lars though- he was already hooked on metal. Looking to start a band, he placed ads in metal magazines, met James Hetfield, and together they formed Metallica.
