"MAJOR ERNST WAGNER" Luftwaffe Fighter Pilot In the early years of World War II, German Luftwaffe pilots enjoyed total air superiority in the skies over Europe flying their Me-109's, Bf109E-4s and later the FW-190s. Flying the then technically advanced machines, the unescorted daytime bombers, such as the B-17, of the Allied forces were easy prey for the well-trained pilots of the Luftwaffe. It was only later in the war, when the Allies developed true long range, high altitude fighters, like the P51's that these pilots were challenged in air to air combat.
