Book: The DC Comics Action Figure Archive by Scott Beatty
DC Comics writer Scott Beatty has collected action figures since the 1970s, but when he first pitched the idea for a visual history of DC's plastic avatars, his bosses said forget it — too expensive. Today, the air is thick with superheroes, and Chronicle Books gave Beatty's concept the green lantern. With achingly detailed close-ups, charts the articulated figures' transformation from children's toys to strangely compelling works of pop art. All the legends are on display, in endless variations: There are more than 100 photos of Caped Crusader figures alone, including Kenner's Arctic Batman, the vampiric Crimson Mist Batman, and Hasbro's dumpy, hatchet-faced Batman Masterpiece edition, with a simple, loose-fitting cloth uniform covering 25 movable joints. Vronk! But the archive also spotlights forgotten characters — from jetpack-propelled interplanetary commuter Adam Strange to Zatanna, a curvy Justice League of America magician outfitted with top hat and real fishnet stockings. We're reminded that, for all their sci-fi fantasy, comics are more about sentimental journeys back to childhood than visions of the future. Is there a male boomer out there who's unmoved at the sight of a 12-inch-high Sgt. Rock action figure (not a doll, thank you!) clad in fatigues and designed to share accessories with G.I. Joe? 'Part of wanting to do the book,' Beatty admits, 'was wanting to legitimize my collection. I'd kept all my receipts.'

Mattel Aug 2007 Presentation For The Upcoming Dc Comics Action Figure
With a bold presentation and obvious passion for the property, Mattel's Scott Neitlich took the Wizard World Chicago audience through a presentation for the upcoming DC Comics action figure line-up that included some convention exclusives and one world premiere.
The presentation began with the Signature Series 6-inch figures and an announcement that all lines to come will be focused on the collector market rather than the general audience. The new lines would have the quality and high detail -- plus high articulation --with a brand new vision to make the DC characters that collectors have clamoured about for years.
The new figures include Clayface; Catwoman with her cat Isis; Nightwing; Bruce Wayne- to-Batman, which comes as Bruce Wayne with a Batman head and chest piece that snaps over top; Laughing Gas Joker, with removable gas mask and gas apparatus; Black & Grey Batman; a Batman two-pack; and the Batman with Nightwing two-pack.
Exclusive to conventions this year is the Man-Bat, which includes “The best packaging ever done for this line,” said Neitlich. With the clear version set up in the packaging, the red in the background gives the figure an eerie effect to look great on any collector's shelf.
Next up was the repeated announcement from San Diego Comic-Con that “The Batman” animated series would be continued with another season and with it will come new toys.
In the new series, Batman will be joining the Justice League, thus bringing the League into the new “The Batman” toy line. Figures will include Superman, with kryptonite decals; Hawkman; Green Lantern; Martian Manhunter; and others to come which will obviously take “The Batman” world to a whole new level.
Speaking of Justice League, “Justice League Unlimited” has some new figures on the way including a Target-exclusive Lava Reflection Doomsday; and the Joker as the Red Hood, with removable red hood. Also shown was the Toys ‘R Us-exclusive Founding Members die-cast pack. Included with the figures, upon purchase, will be a pullout poster with all 78 figures in the line.
Neitlich wanted to make a point that Mattel and DC are listening to their fans and are trying their best to fulfill their needs and wants. They have lots of characters to make for 2008 and beyond and want the input of the fanbase and are investigating new ways to make that line of communication easier for both Mattel and the fans. Two of the characters to look forward to are Shazam and Blackhawk.

Hasbro 2007 Transformers Movie Voyager Blackout

When pictures of the Transformers Movie Voyager Blackout appeared online a while back, I was amazed at how awesome this figure looked. Not wanting to wait any longer to get one, I won one on eBay and got it this morning. I was not disappointed with what I got.

Note: My pictures may not be the best quality, but I'm reviewing this from my college dorm room and used my cell phone camera, so bear with me. VEHICLE MODE:

This mode can be summed up in one word: excellent. Blackout is the closest we'll ever get to an Alternators version of a helicopter Transformer. Blackout's alt. mode is that of a Sikorsky MH-53 Pave Low military transport helicopter, and resembles a real one almost perfectly. The detailing is great, and there is no robot kibble visible at all, unless you flip him over. The color scheme is mainly cobalt blue, with some black parts as well as yellow and red paint on some minor areas. There are wheels on the underside of the 'copter, if you want to roll Blackout around for some reason. A neat gimmick involves a miniature Scorponok that is stored on the underside of the 'copter tail. Push a button, and the 'cage' pops open and Scorponok drops out. Scorponok himself is decently detailed, though lacking in paint apps, being mostly pearl white with some black.

My favorite feature of this mode is the spinning rotor. By pushing a button on the tail, the rotor spins, a nice addition to an already superb vehicle mode.
TRANSFORMATION:
Transforming this guy is very easy. I had no problem transforming him without any instructions. Transformation is about the same level as Classics Voyagers. There's no need for me to go into any detail, it's simple enough. His 'Automorph' feature is that his head and chest flip up into place when you rotate his hips up. Nothing amazing, but still neat. ROBOT MODE:

Another fantastic mode. Color scheme gets more black in this mode, as well as some silver and the same pearly-white color found on Scorponok. He's also got red light piping for his eyes. Blackout just looks really cool in this mode. He's got about 21 points of articulation -though his poseability is somewhat limited by the helicopter kibble on his back (but other than that, there's nothing wrong with this mode.) This toy does look a lot like the Blackout seen in the movie trailer, which is a good thing. Blackout has no handheld weapons, but his Scorponok-deploying gimmick works in this mode (I guess he drops Scorponok off his back in the movie, so this is appropriate) and his rotor assembly can be used as an over-the-shoulder blade weapon which is cool.

Urban Vinyl Action Figures at Your Local Comic Book Store

Diamond Comics is adding a new section to the monthly Previews catalog - a section devoted to designer toys, which includes urban vinyl action figures. The section will include an 'Artist Spotlight' each month and will sometimes offer exclusive toys only available through Previews (and thus only available at your local comic book store). In addition to the toys, the new section will also showcase books and magazines about designer toys and figures.
This new section will give designers and toy companies a broader audience for their creations and will give collectors another source for these toys. This is especially good news for collectors who do not live near a large city (such as New York or Los Angeles) that has a specialty urban vinyl store.

Tonner company 2006 New DC COMICS Super Hero TONNER CHARACTER FIGURES
'What we have created are not fashion dolls, or typical action figures, but a new type of hybrid,' notes Robert Tonner, CEO and head designer of the award-winning Tonner company. 'I wanted to bring a different approach to the category by working large scale, with more detailed, removable clothing, offering separately available costumes and accessories. I believe a new classification is appropriate--hence the TCF™ concept.'

The time may be right for Tonner to introduce his hybrid product. According to leading consumer and retail information provider The NPD Group, retail sales in the U.S. toy industry generated just over $21.8 billion in 2005, with dolls, action figures and accessories exceeding $4 billion in sales; 2005 sales were up from 2004 sales by 1%. 'Super Heroes have traditionally been a top selling product category,' noted Tom Tumbusch, publisher of Tomart's Action Figure Digest. 'Tonner's Wonder Woman and Super Girl articulated character figures are two of the most faithful representations of these characters ever produced and will have appeal to our readers and collectors.'

The TONNER CHARACTER FIGURES™ are app. 16' tall with multiple articulated joints for expressive movement and mobility. In keeping with the fine detail and high-end quality of Tonner's other popular product lines, TONNER CHARACTER FIGURES™ will feature hand-detailed face painting, rooted hair; and authentic costuming inspired by the character's life from origin and secret identity to Super Hero.

The initial line will feature WONDER WOMAN and SUPERGIRL, both inspired by art concepts from the 'Silver Age' of DC Comics' comic books. WONDER WOMAN will include costumes from her Amazon origins, DIANA PRINCE secret identity clothing and unique touches such as golden bracelets instead of the traditional blue iron/silver bracelets most commonly seen on this character.

SUPERGIRL is inspired by the original KARA ZOR-EL, cousin of SUPERMAN. SUPERGIRL will include clothing from her KRYPTONIAN origins and her LINDA LEE secret identity.

Tonner debuted the DC STARS collection on its website (http://www.tonnercollectibles.com) on September 27, 2006. TCF's based on the DC STARS Collection will be sold at gift and toy specialty retailers nationwide, including FAO Schwarz, beginning December 2006; the suggested retail price range is $124.99 for dressed TCFs. Separately available clothing will be available as well as character variations in strictly limited edition releases. Tonner will expand the collection in 2007 to include SUPERMAN, LOIS LANE, BATMAN, BATGIRL, and other related DC Comics heroes and villains.

Additionally, in a positive show of support, Action Figure Digest has put TCF's DC STARS on the cover of issue #148 of their publication. Said Chris Hall, editor, 'It was an easy choice for Tomart's Action Figure Digest to use DC STARS for the cover. The figures naturally grab your attention. Tonner has proven they know how to give collector's a quality figure in a reasonable price range.'

Headquartered in Hurley, New York, the Tonner Doll Company, Inc. develops and markets high quality collectible dolls like Betsy McCall®, Mary Engelbreit®, Effanbee® Dolls, and the popular Tyler Wentworth® line of dolls and fashions, as well as other licensed characters, including THE WIZARD OF OZ dolls and HARRY POTTER™ TCFs.

Star Trek Comics Soar Again With New Comics Partner - TrekWeb.com
San Diego, CA (November 9, 2006)—It’s not a rift in the space/time continuum—IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the return of Star Trek to the realm of comic books. The legendary science fiction franchise that’s spanned six television series, ten motion pictures, and hundreds of novels, celebrates its 40th anniversary by naming IDW Publishing as the source for all-new Star Trek comic book voyages.

IDW’s plans for the Star Trek franchise in comics are far-reaching, and will unfold over the next few months. The first Star Trek miniseries will debut in January 2007, in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation®.  Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D return with an all-new adventure that will span The Next Generation timeline. The six-issue miniseries, Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Space Between, begins by setting the scene during the first year of the Enterprise-D’s mandated mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly going “where no one has gone before.”

At the helm of this first venture is writer David Tischman (Bite Club), who is joined by artist Casey Maloney (Children of the Grave). Artists Dennis Calero (X-Factor) and Zach Howard (Shaun of the Dead) will provide 50/50 covers for the first issue, with covers from Spectrum Award-winning artist Jeremy Geddes (Doomed) and veteran painter Ken Kelly (KISS’s Destroyer album art) also on the way.

But that’s just the beginning. IDW Publishing will be producing additional Star Trek titles with a new line of comic book projects in the rich tradition of 40 years of science fiction excellence.

Tonner Dec 2006 DC Comics Super Hero Figures

These two beauties are 16-inches tall with rooted hair and cloth outfits, including a super hero costume and a civilian outfit. Extra outfits will be available separately, and it appears that there are special edition figures also planned, such as Wonder Woman in her Amazon Princess outfit (white billowy dress).
In 2007, several more Tonner Character Figures will be available, including Superman, Lois Lane, Batman, and Batgirl, along with a few as-yet-unnamed DC Comics heroes and villains.
