About Hasbro.Transformers
Hasbro, Inc. started as a family-owned company and, in its 75-year history, has grown from eight family members working in a small shop in Providence, Rhode Island to a children's and family leisure time and entertainment company with approximately 10,000 employees worldwide. Two brothers, Henry and Helal Hassenfeld founded Hasbro in 1923. They sold textile remnants and later, began manufacturing pencil boxes and school supplies. Monumental growth occurred during the 1960s with the introduction of one of the most successful toys ever marketed, G.I. Joe®. On October 10, 1968, Hasbro became a public company and changed its name to Hasbro Industries, Inc. In 1983, Hasbro purchased Knickerbocker Toy Company (Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy) 1984: Hasbro acquired the world's largest and oldest game and puzzle maker, the Milton Bradley Company 1991: acquired Tonka Corporation (Tonka Trucks, Monopoly, Nerf, Easy-Bake Oven, Clue, Play-Doh) 1995: purchased the Larami Corporation and its popular Super Soaker® line. 1997: Lucasfilm renewed and expanded its licensing agreement with Hasbro for the next three installments of the Star Wars saga 1998, Hasbro acquired Tiger Electronics

The History of Transformers on TV

The Transformers was part of an aggressive push of new animated series that tied in with toy lines, and was easily one of the most popular, if not the most popular of all.
There was a Marvel comic book that launched at the same time as the cartoon that shared some similarities in the set up before going in very different directions. But unlike Hasbro's other huge toy line at the time, G.I. Joe, where the comic book is probably considered the most 'genuine' version of the story, it's the cartoon that stands out most of all for Transformers fans. Many central conceits simultaneously introduced on the cartoon and in the comic became core elements of the characters in most of the later incarnations. Some of the most notable of these elements are the Transformers' home planet Cybertron; their crash landing on Earth millions of years ago; and the Autobots' friendship with a teenage boy with the last name Witwicky ('Spike' in the cartoon, 'Buster' in the comic).

The Transformers was an extremely popular cartoon at the time it first aired, with plenty of kids quite thrilled to have animated adventures about the very cool robot toys. Beginning with a voiceover that presented the story as something huge and mythological ('Many millions of years ago, on the planet Cybertron…') the show struck a chord with a Star Wars-fueled group of kids who loved stories about aliens caught in an intergalactic civil war. The cartoon also served to make icons out of many of the main characters of the series, including Bumblebee, Soundwave, Jazz, Ravage and more. However, the standouts were probably Megatron, Starscream and of course, Optimus Prime.Megatron and Starscream made for a terrific villainous pairing, with the ruthless and evil Megatron (voice over veteran Frank Welker) constantly fending off the power hungry plotting of Starscream (voiced by Chris Latta, who would also become very familiar as the voice of Cobra Commander on G.I. Joe). As for Optimus Prime, as silly as it sounds, the giant robot who could transform into a truck became a huge hero for kids growing up on the cartoon, who loved to see his brave acts and hear the comforting voice of Peter Cullen intoning 'Autobots, transform and roll out!'

Viewed 25 years after its debut, The Transformers is hardly what we could call great television. The stories are fairly simplistic and repetitive, consisting of variations on the same storylines, most of which center on Megatron attempting to get some new weapon or source of power (or create an occasional Space Bridge to Cybertron), with many of the same beats occurring time and again. But kids certainly weren't troubled by how many times Megatron would yell 'Decepticons, retreat!' or Spike and Bumblebee would get into trouble, or that the fight scenes are, well, kind of lame actually. They just enjoyed seeing giant robots change into other things and then fight each other. And to see how important these characters were to a certain generation, just bring up the 1986 spinoff/continuation of the cartoon, Transformers: The Movie, to anyone who saw it when it first came out, and see the amusingly touched reactions of those who remember crying when Optimus Prime died.

Hasbro July 2009 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has sold over $200 million in 5 days

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” the new Paramount Pictures movie based on Hasbro Inc.’s toy brand, generated more ticket revenue during its first five days of release than any other film except last year’s “The Dark Knight,” Bloomberg News reported.
Despite critical reviews, “Transformers” sold $201 million in tickets between its opening last Wednesday and yesterday, just short of the $204 million five-day total posted by “The Dark Knight” a year ago, according to the research firm Hollywood.com Box-Office. It also set a record for the biggest five-day haul for a movie that opened on a Wednesday; “Dark Knight” opened on a Friday.
The Internet Movie Database estimates that “Transformers” cost $200 million to make, meaning the film may be in the black already.
So far this year, only “Up” and “Star Trek” have sold more tickets than “Transformers” already has, according to Box Office Mojo LLC, another research firm.
The movie also topped the estimate of Jeffrey Hartke, an analyst at the movie Web site Hollywood Stock Exchange, who said he expected “Transformers” to earn $170 million over its first five days in release.
“To cross $200 million in five days is huge,” Chad Hartigan, a box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, told Bloomberg. “ ‘Transformers’ has put itself in some pretty illustrious company.”
Both Hasbro and Paramount are counting on “Transformers” to boost earnings this year, much as the first movie in the series did in 2007. Products connected with the toy generated $482 million in sales two year ago and made up 12.6 percent of Hasbro’s net revenue, according to regulatory filings. It was the only time over the past three years that one product line has brought in more than 10 percent of Hasbro’s net sales.
Paramount wants to turn “Transformers” into a lucrative film franchise and plans to make more films based on the brand with director Michael Bay, studio CEO Brad Grey told Bloomberg. “I hope there’s a third, a fourth and a fifth” Transformers film, Grey declared. The original “Transformers,” released in 2007, earned $708 million worldwide.
Grey also said he hopes another film based on a Hasbro toy brand, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra,” will be a blockbuster when it gets released in August. “One of my goals in going to Paramount was to build franchise pictures,” said Grey, who joined Paramount in 2005. “Between ‘Transformers’ and ‘Star Trek,’ and hopefully ‘G.I. Joe,’ we are starting to accomplish that goal.”

Hasbro July 2009 Toys for the new Transformers movie are 'very movie-accurate'

Walter Mueller knows his Transformers. The 32-year-old has been collecting the robot toys for more than 20 years. He even has one of the brand's main characters, Optimus Prime, tattooed in full color on his leg. The owner of a meat-processing plant, Mueller recently traveled from his native Ontario, Canada, to Southern California to attend BotCon, the 15th annual Transformers convention, in hopes of adding to his arsenal of more than 1,000 toys. The 'Transformers' movie and its sequel have spawned dozens of new characters, while also having the effect of making the shape-shifting robots infinitely more complex than the toys that were first introduced in 1984, the year Mueller became a fan. This self-perpetuating cycle -- toys inspiring a film that inspired more sophisticated toys -- has also made the miniaturized versions 'cool again for a younger generation,' Mueller said. As the film raised the bar on the merchandise, the merchandise has responded, Mueller said. 'They're very movie-accurate,' he said. And that's by design -- literally. Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman went to Hasbro's 'Transformers school' to get to know the Autobots and Decepticons before crafting their story about alien robots who come to earth and befriend an American teenager. 'Even if I wasn't involved,' Orci told a crowd at BotCon, 'I'd want the toy to match the movie as much as possible.' The toy company's designers also worked hand-in-hand with director Michael Bay to ensure that the giant robot characters on screen would have matching downsized counterparts at toy stores worldwide. (Hasbro Inc. is a production partner on the picture, and its chief executive is credited as co-executive producer.) 'The movie is a challenge, but it's a good challenge,' said Hasbro senior design director Aaron Archer. 'As (Bay) has ideas and his team has ideas, we put our lore and our characters in there and mix them back and forth. Then the guys at Hasbro have to figure out how to take this awesome car image and this awesome robot image and make it move in such a way that you end up with those looks.' The big-screen 'bots are entirely computer generated. Their detailed transformations look spectacular but only exist in a digital world, making them far more complicated than their toy counterparts. A souped-up police car, for example, undergoes countless intricate, incremental changes to become the evil Decepticon Barricade. The plastic toys, however, must face the realities of 3-D physics -- and be user-friendly enough for a kid to enjoy. 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,' introduces more than 25 characters to the Transformers family, including Sideswipe, a swordsmith disguised as a silver Corvette, and Soundwave, an evil cannon-wielding robot camouflaged as a spaceship.

Hasbro July 2009 insight: Photography and Dioramas by Gianni Lopergol

HASBRO is sponsoring a project to help raise money for ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease by selling a book of toy diorama photography by an artist who uses their toys in diorama's for advertising. The book is called insight: Photography and Dioramas by Gianni Lopergol.

The toys listed as featured in the photographic compilation are said to be Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Marvel Super Heroes.

While technically not a Transformers item for sale, it does appeal to the crowd on this site because many of us collect other toys, or are fans of photography of them, or diorama creation. And of course, not only is it an interesting book, but it also serves to help a great cause.

You can see a link to the item on HASBRO's website, and a pre-order for the book at hasbrotoyshop.

insight: is a 128-page, full-color photography book from former Hasbro photographer, Gianni Lopergolo. A trailblazing artist, Gianni reinvented the way product photography was done at Hasbro, using unconventional lighting techniques and building scene-stealing dioramas from everyday objects. Now in the fight of his life, Gianni has been battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, for three years. No longer able to work, and with the help of his friends, Gianni recently realized his lifelong dream of publishing a book of his photography. Featuring the much-loved G.I. JOE, Marvel and Star Wars product lines, insight: displays over 90 of Gianni’s favorite images and even includes some previously unreleased photos. Hasbro is proud to present this book in support of the National ALS Association and a private fund to be established for Gianni’s three young sons.

Hasbro July 2009 Transformers movies propels spin-off toy sales

With the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen enjoying record ticket sales in China this month, spin-offs of Transformer toys and other products are booming, too. The action movie's ticket sales totaled more than 400 million yuan in China in its first three weeks in theaters. Like earlier hit movies such as the Star Wars and Batman series of films, spin-off toys became top sellers, too.
Transformers movie propels spin-off toy sales' align=center src=http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/bizchina/images/attachement/jpg/site1/20090720/0013729e48340bce087c36.jpg sourcename=本地文件 sourcedescription=编辑提供的本地文件>
'Transformer toy sales increased by 70 percent to 80 percent after the movie came out,' Liu Yang, marketing manager of UME Huaxing International Cineplex, told China Business Weekly. 'Sales were even higher on weekends. They almost doubled, compared to weekdays,' Liu said. Spin-offs included Transformer toys, key rings and other gadgets. A special stamp album featuring likenesses of Transformer characters, although priced at 500 yuan each, also were popular, Liu said.
'For people in their 20s and 30s, watching a Transformer movie is like reuniting with a lost friend,' said Wei Wei, owner of a Beijing toy shop. Although Wei's shop is only about 60 sq m in size, daily sales usually hit 6,000 yuan in the wake of the new Transformer movie's release, he said.
'The first Transformer movie attracted mainly the 70s and 80s generations,' Wei said about the movie based on a popular children's television show of that era.

'Now small children also come and buy models to play with,' Wei said.
Like Transformer toys, the movie features colorful robots that 'transform' into cars and other objects.
It's not just toys. Other products featuring a Transformer tie-in are becoming popular, too.
'Without any advertisement and in just about a month, the sales of our Transformer USB flash drives were up to almost 10,000,' Zeng Ni, marketing manager of Tsinghua Tongfang Co Ltd, said about his company's new product.
'We knew that Transformers would be the talk of the town, so last year we began to develop a series of Transformer IT products,' Zeng said.
His company's efforts paid off. In addition to USB flash drives, the company introduced Transformer laptops and desktops.
Both items posted sales increases of 20 percent to 30 percent since the end of June, following the movie's release, Zeng said.
'We focused on the large number of Transformer fans, and we were right,' Zeng said.
The Meters/bonwe Group formed a partnership with US-based Hasbro Inc to become the only Chinese fashion and accessories company licensed to use Transformers images, typefaces and logos.
Among the hot summer sellers on the company's online store at Taobao.com is a Bumblee T-shirt.
More than 800 T-shirts featuring the yellow robot character from the movie have sold recently, the company reported.
'It's delightful that we still have a double-digit year-on-year increase in sales amid a sluggish economy and the off-season,' Xu Weidong, deputy general manager of Meters/bonwe, was cited by The Economic Observer as saying.
Meters/bonwe also landed a deal for 'product placement' in the new movie.
Xu labeled the appearance of Meters/bonwe products in the movie as a 'win-win situation' for advertising his company's products, although he declined to disclose the cost of the deal.
While US moviemakers have long promoted the appeal of spin-off toys and other products, the Chinese movie industry has yet to fully capitalize on spin-offs, some Chinese industry experts said.

Hasbro July 2009 Ready To Cash In On Toys Tied To Transformers Movie

Hasbro Inc. (HAS) is revving up for bigger sales in the toy aisle thanks to the blockbuster Transformers movie sequel, with merchandise sales topping the 2007 product lineup by as much as 25%, analysts say.
'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' is No. 1 at the box office so far this year. Since its June 24 release, the movie has racked up $607.6 million in global ticket sales through July 6, according to reporting service Box Office Mojo.
Industry analysts forecast that Transformers toy-related sales, including licensing fees, could be as high as $600 million by year's end. If sales hit that mark, this would be 25% above the $482 million in sales the first Transformers movie-toy line racked up two years ago.
Retailers started to sell merchandise for the second Transformers movie on May 30. The toys, celebrating their 25th anniversary, include robot action figures, helmets and lunch bags. 'The toys are doing exceptionally well,' said Lutz Muller, a toy-marketing analyst who runs Vermont-based Klosters Trading Corp.
In an emailed statement, Toys 'R' Us said the new Transformers 'have surpassed sales of the toys based on the first Transformers movie.' The major retailer helped support Hasbro's launch of the product line with print and Internet ads.
Shares of Hasbro traded flat at $23.04 in early afternoon trading Wednesday.
Analysts' estimates vary on Transformer product sales for this year. Drew Crum at Stifel Nicolaus expects Hasbro to generate $550 million in sales from the toy line this year, while Sterne Agee's Margaret Whitfield estimates Transformers toy sales can easily exceed $500 million.
Sean McGowan at Needham & Co. projects Hasbro will sell $595 million worth of new and old Transformers merchandise in 2009, or 14% of total company sales.
There is less competition among movie-themed toys on retailer shelves this year.
In 2008, kids had plenty to choose from, when Hasbro and Mattel Inc. (MAT) made numerous toys tied to action movies featuring Indiana Jones as well as comic-book characters Batman, Iron Man and the Hulk.
Gerrick Johnson, analyst at BMO Capital Markets, estimates Transformers sales could provide a lift to Hasbro's second-quarter earnings due to the strength of orders ahead of the sequel's release. The toys have wider distribution compared with 2007, he added.
But Johnson expects 2009 Transformers sales to be on par with those of 2007. He cited cautious consumer spending and competition from popular Bakugan action figures that sell for less. Toronto-based SpinMaster sells Bakugan.
Hasbro could not be reached for comment on how the sales have gone so far.
The company reports second-quarter earnings July 20. Analysts expect the toy maker to earn 24 cents a share, compared with 25 cents a share earned in the year-earlier quarter, according to FactSet. Sales are pegged to rise to $797 million from $784 million.
Hasbro is looking to generate more action-figure sales from the Aug. 7 movie release of 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.' Muller of Klosters Trading estimates G.I. Joe movie-related toys will generate sales between $150 million to $180 million in 2009.
Yet Muller warned that G.I. Joe toy sales could be undercut by Transformers and toys tied to the July 15 release of the latest Harry Potter film.
Hasbro shares have fallen 21% for the year to date, compared with a 2% loss for the S&P 500 Index and a 5% loss for Mattel. Investors have become wary of Hasbro since the company announced a kids' TV joint venture with Discovery in late April. McGowan rates Hasbro shares overweight; Crum has a hold on them, Whitfield a buy and Johnson a sell.
The mean target price on the stock is $2

July 2009 Mattel, Hasbro Cut Costs, Plan for Growth

While toy sales hold up well during recessions -- no parent wants to suggest a no-gifts birthday party -- the industry hasn't been immune from slowing revenue this time around. Which is why it's encouraging to hear good news from Mattel(MAT Quote) and Hasbro(HAS Quote), the No. 1 and 2 American toy companies, respectively. This week, each reported higher-than-expected quarterly profits, bringing much-needed optimism to the sector. No matter what the age of your target consumer, you can learn something from these companies' survival strategies. In the short term, make the best of what you've got by paring costs and focusing on a few key products. At the same time, you've got to lay the groundwork for future growth or risk getting left behind. This should have been a banner year for Mattel and Hasbro. Mattel's iconic Barbie doll turned 50, kicking off a wave of publicity. This spring, the company opened a six-floor flagship Barbie store in Shanghai, where shoppers can pick up doll-sized Vera Wang wedding gowns, catch a live fashion show and design their own custom doll. Hasbro, for its part, expected its Transformers toys to get a major boost from the movie 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,' one of the year's biggest blockbusters. But penny-pinching customers have taken a toll on overall sales for both companies. According to Sean McGowan, a consumer leisure and lifestyle analyst at Needham & Co., last year's holiday season was the worst for toy sales in 40 years. 'The companies that did well were the ones who took away their promotional budgets and used that to cut prices. If you weren't offering value, people weren't buying.'

Hasbro & Mattel July 2009 GI Joe Is On A Risky Mission, While Mattel's Barbie Conserves her Cash

Hasbro's G.I. Joe Is On A Risky Mission, While Mattel's Barbie Conserves Her Cash

Hasbro's G.I. Joe Is On A Risky Mission, While Mattel's Barbie Conserves Her Cash

Toy giant Hasbro reported its second quarter earnings on July 20 and the company beat analysts’ estimates. Earnings climbed 5% to $39 million. Archrival Mattel did well too, reporting on July 17 that its earnings leapt 90% to $21 million in the same period. But that’s where the comparisons end. Hasbro’s sales climbed 1% to $790 million for the quarter. Mattel’s revenues plunged 19% to $898 million.
The divergent sales trends reflect two very different approaches to management in this Great Recession. Hasbro has continued to invest in risky entertainment ventures, as part of a strategy to extend its famous toy brands into TV, the Web and the big screen. Mattel, by contrast, is playing it much more conservatively, cutting costs and husbanding its cash for better days.
SnakeEyes_1.JPG

Hasbro has got two big movies out this summer that it helped produce. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen has already taken in more than $700 million in ticket sales worldwide and has become the top-grossing film of all time in China. Two years ago Hasbro sold nearly half a billion worth of toys tied to the first Transformers movie. Analysts believe it’s on track to top that this year.

Next up is a new G.I. Joe movie, to be released on August 7. It is also expected to do well, though not in the Transformers league. That’s a picture to the right of “Snake Eyes,” a character from the new movie. G.I. Joes don’t look they did when I was a kid.
Hasbro has continued to invest in this tough market. In April it announced it was spending $300 million to buy half of a new cable television network from Discovery Communications. Continued investment in that joint venture alone cost the company $9 million this quarter. Hasbro also spent $90 million renewing license agreements with Marvel Entertainment and Lucas Films. Overall its cash balance fell by one-third to $390 million in the past year.
“We feel very good about our long-term prospects for growth,” Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner told investors in a July 20 conference call. “Retailers around the world are supporting us. They want to place bets with great brands.”
Mattel, by contrast, is on track to cut a total of $200 million in costs out of its system in 2009 and 2010. Those efforts are behind its recent profit boost. Still, some of its core brands such as Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price are shrinking. Barbie sales worldwide were down 15% in the second quarter. In part that’s because the company is phasing out new Barbie DVD releases that were big sellers in past holiday seasons. It wants to be less reliant on such hit-or-miss entertainment properties.
Mattel’s CEO Robert Eckert blames the sales losses on retailers cutting back inventory, negative foreign currency adjustments and the company’s lack of big movie related toy licenses compared to last year. Instead he’s focused on right-sizing the company and on conserving cash. He’s increased the company’s cash holding in the quarter to $423 million, up from $384 million in same period last year.
Some analysts think Eckert is playing his hand well. “Everybody knows the economy stinks,” says Lutz Miller, who follows the toy business at Kloster Trading. “They’re saying if we downplay it and cut costs, and if things go better than we said then investors will be over the moon.” Others are concerned Eckert may not be investing as much in the business as he should. Hasbro July 2009 New cable network being launched by Discovery Communications and toy giant Hasbro Inc.

Veteran kids programming executive Margaret Loesch has been tapped to run the new cable network being launched by Discovery Communications and toy giant Hasbro Inc.
LOESCHThe unnamed channel, which is set to launch late next year, has already drawn a fair amount of criticism from media watchdogs because of Hasbro's involvement. The well-regarded Loesch, who ran Fox Broadcasting's kids programming unit during its 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers'and 'X-Men' heyday, says the channel won't be a shill for Hasbro products.
'They understand this can't be a channel devoted to toys. . . . That would not succeed,' Loesch said, adding that if Hasbro didn't embrace that, 'I would not have taken this job.'
The channel, which is taking the slot currently occupied by Discovery Kids, should launch in about 60 million homes. It will face intense competition from already-entrenched networks including Viacom's Nickelodeon, Disney's Disney Channel and its new Disney XD and Time Warner's Cartoon Network.
Loesch, who also ran the Hallmark Channel for Crown Media and most recently has been producing movies, says that while the cable competition is intense, she is just as concerned about all the other media platforms she'll be facing off against besides traditional TV.
'When we built Fox Kids, they were primarily watching television; now we have to make sure we provide an experience on all these different platforms,' she said.

Hasbro July 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Action Figures are Invading Toy Shelves

If you're like me, you've been practically doing cartwheels over the upcoming release of G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Not only am I little-girl-with-a-pony excited about the release of the movie, but what I'm really drooling over is the release of the action figures! I've been waiting for a live-action G.I. Joe movie since I was 10 and the new action figures are just another way to celebrate my childhood hopes being brought to life.
This past week, official G.I. Joe movie figures have started hitting the internet toy-sellers, giving many of us our first looks at some of the new figures, vehicles and playsets. Considering the bulk of the collection, it looks like Hasbro is not pulling any punches and giving the fans what they crave.
Reports are starting to spread among the action figure blogs about people finally beginning to see some of the new figures in retail stores as well, although I predict that the wave of toys will hit full force in about a week or so. If you find yourself swinging by Target for some laundry detergent and cat food, you may just want to take a peek at the action figure aisle and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Hasbro July 2009 G.I.Joe Movie Figures: The Best (and The Worst)

THE BEST:

7) 12-Inch Baroness
3470831921_66acbb0e63.jpg
Sure, a lot of fans haven't reacted well to Sienna Miller's American-accented turn as the Baroness, although pretty much everyone agrees she looks pretty darn good. So we have to give credit to Hasbro for this amazing sculpt in their otherwise utterly awful line of 12' 'Rise of Cobra' figures. It's a shame she's stuck as an SDCC exclusive, because we imagine most Joe fans will want to get their hands on this figure. This toy looks so realistic that it wouldn't surprise you much if she leapt off your display shelf, seduced you, and then shot you in the leg for being a lech. Or maybe that's just our fantasy.

6) Ice Viper
HAS17406.jpg
Coursing through the snow, icing G.I. Joe, it's Cobra, Cobraaa!!! Most of the Cobra troopers from the film don't look as neat as the original designs, but the Ice Viper is something special. Each one is decked out for cold weather in grey camo and a white parka packed with supplies, and wears a sweet visor. These figures are totally cool, and you can army-build them to your heart's delight -- if you can find them.

Hasbro July 2009 G.I. Joe - DVD Battles: Pyramid of Darkness
For the children of the 1980s who rushed home from school every day to see the G.I. Joe cartoon and stage mega-battles with their action figures, Hasbro must’ve had you in mind when it came up with this product, complete with a DVD of the cartoon and toys.

You’ll laugh and cringe at some of the bad dialogue (“vibrating like a $50 milkshake” and “What this doesn’t look like is good” – ouch) and unrealistic elements of the 5-part Pyramid of Darkness mini-series, where the Joes split off into different groups to foil Cobra’s latest nefarious plan. This time around, those snakes plan on controlling the world’s electricity with the Joe team’s space station at the nexus point, where team leader Duke (why wasn’t General Hawk, a founding Joe, in the early seasons of this cartoon?), Scarlett, Dusty, Mutt, and other Joes are located (and eventually captured).

Zartan hijacks the station by siccing Fatal Fluffies on the Joes. Really! They’re the cutest little things this side of the Ewoks, but once you blow a whistle, they mutate into mean, tall, horned Chewbacca-like monsters.

Meanwhile, Snake-Eyes and Shipwreck, along with their pets (Timber the wolf and Polly the parrot, respectively) split off from the rest of the team and are pursued by Cobra agents. They meet a singer named Satin, who helps them. There’s a funny scene where Satin gets the two up on the stage as part of her kick-line. Then, Snake-Eyes really busts a move by break-dancing. Yes, break-dancing! And the hell of it? He’s good. You can tell this was made in the mid-1980s.

Wait! It gets better! From there, he and Shipwreck travel incognito and Snake-Eyes gets the dress. Shipwreck looks like a poor man’s George Michael and Snake-Eyes is a cross between Boy George and Cyndi Lauper (he wears the gaudy clothes over his black head-to-toe combat gear). You don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Polly the parrot gets annoying. The bird saves the duo’s butts a few times, most notably by getting them past the guards by saying, “Cobra Commander! The great snake rules forever!” Polly and Timber also wear sunglasses and dance when their owners put on disguises then fight their way out of a group of Cobra troopers (who, like the Joes, can’t shoot the broadside of the barn, making Storm Troopers look like marksmen).

Oddly enough, Snake-Eyes – the most popular character in the G.I. Joe canon – didn’t have much of a role on the cartoon as opposed to the starring role he had in the comic (probably because the writers couldn’t do much with a mute character and the audience was little kids). This is one of his very few times in the spotlight in this cartoon. And instead of fighting Storm Shadow, he break-dances and dresses in drag. You’re surprised that the action figure included of the character doesn’t have him in this get-up. Would’ve been funny if it did. Perhaps a mail-order exclusive?

Hasbro July 2009 Mighty Muggs - Star Wars - New Vinyl!

The Empire Muggs Back (StarWars.com)
Your task: take an urban vinyl toy and transform it into art, all for a good cause. Lucasfilm presented the opportunity to artists, comic book creators, toy designers, and celebrity fans, and the result is a project called The Empire Muggs Back. The individual, one-of-a-kind pieces will be displayed at San Diego Comic-Con next week and also online at StarWars.com before being auctioned by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Any Mighty Muggs collectors out there? I'm out of touch with the toy scene, but the Wikipedia entry claims the Mighty Muggs 'resemble super deformed versions of characters' from blockbuster movie franchises: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, G.I. Joe, the Transformers, and Marvel Comics. Prices range from $9.99 up to $174.99. Blank Mighty Muggs are also available, which can be customized to the buyer's content. You'd need to really stretch your imagination to think the Star Wars toys actually resembled Anakin Skywalker, C-3PO, or Chewbacca -- and maybe that's the point. They are definitely funny-looking little things.
Hasbro donated the blanks (the white one looks kinda scary to me) and you can see 26 samples in the image above, which amply demonstrate the creativity that the project inspired. I especially like the TIE Fighter figure in the second row. If you won't be in San Diego next week, check StarWars.com for more upcoming pictures. As one of the artists said: 'We all had the same blank bowl of ice cream to start with, now i want to see all the nerdy, nerdy toppings everyone came up with!'

GM 2010 Transformers Special Edition Chevy Camaro unveiled

2010 Transformers Special Edition Chevy Camaro unveiled

by Alex Nunez on Jul 22nd 2009 at 12:35PM Breaking
vspace=4

Today at Comic-Con, General Motors officially announced the 2010 Chevy Camaro Transformers Special Edition. The $995 appearance package can be applied to LT (V6) and SS-trim Camaros in Rally Yellow with or without the optional RS package. So, whadda ya get for the dough? It's very straightforward:
  • Autobot insignia fender badges and wheel caps
  • An embroidered Autobot insignia on the center console
  • Gloss-black rally stripes with Transformers logos
  • Transformers-logo doorsill plates
If you were hoping for more, such as the Z/28 fascia and hood, the storm drain-sized exhaust outlets used on Bumblebee in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, or, say, an actual robot mode, you're outta luck. There are no performance upgrades, either -- you'll simply have to make do with the 304, 400, or 426 horsepower that comes standard, depending on which base config you select. If you desperately want your own Bumblebee but are turned off by the whole Transformers brand-mania thing, you can still do the obvious thing and order up a regular Rally Yellow car and simply add plain black rally stripes for $470. We'd do that. Check out the official press release after the jump
