About Cartoon Books
Bone is perhaps the best known of the high quality, black-and-white, alternative Comics that came into being during the last few years. It is self-published by author and writer Jeff Smith at Cartoon Books, which recently has joined the creator owned imprint Image. (I hope it remains monochrome, though. I just hate those computer colorings that abound at Image.)

Hasbro and Cartoon Network Nov 2007 Animated Movie
There’s more than meets the eye when Cartoon Network premieres a 90-minute feature presentation of Transformers Animated Movie “Transform and Roll Out!” on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at 8 p.m. (ET, PT). The adventure begins when Optimus Prime and his small crew of Autobots come into possession of the AllSpark, a powerful Cybertronian artifact that attracts the attention of their long-forgotten enemies, the Decepticons, and sends them crashing to a strange and distant planet known as Earth.

The movie kicks off the brand new series, Transformers Animated, set to premiere on Cartoon Network Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (ET, PT). Set on Earth in the near future in Detroit, the series begins when the alien Transformers are thrust into a world populated by humans and automatons. As visitors to Earth, the Transformers --Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Prowl, Bulkhead and Ratchet-- work in the human world, interacting with the ‘natives’ in exciting and humorous ways. Following the Autobots across the galaxy to their new home, is the megalomaniacal Megatron and his army of ruthless Decepticons, a brutal race of war-mongering robots who seek to use the AllSpark as their ultimate weapon of destruction!

The Autobots unlikely guide through Earth society is a brash, energetic 8-year-old girl named Sari Sumdac, the adopted daughter of a robotics magnate. Setting the Autobots up with their headquarters in an old abandoned auto plant on the outskirts of town, Sari not only becomes an “honorary Autobot” by enlightening them on such mysteries of Earth life such as megamalls, holovision, hoverboards, junk food, and basic hanging out, but also becomes a vital component of the team in their adventures. For the AllSpark endows Sari with a very special power, one the Decepticons would love to get their hands on, not to mention the AllSpark itself.

Transformers Animated is jointly developed by Cartoon Network and Hasbro, Inc. and is co-produced by Cartoon Network Studios. Matt Youngberg (Teen Titans, The Batman) is supervising director, Derrick Wyatt (Teen Titans) provides the character designs and Sam Register (Ben 10, Teen Titans) serves as executive producer of the series. Marty Isenberg (Danny Phantom., X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) acts as head writer.

Hasbro and HPG, its licensing division, will expand the action-packed Transformers Animated series through toys, games, licensed merchandise and promotions around the world.

Carnival Cartoons Nov 2007 The Carneys - Harriet Carney - review

Img_2722
Background
The guys behind Carnival Cartoons, Jared Deal and Garnet Syberg-Olsen, introduced us to The Carneys back in early 2006.  The line revolves around a group of carnival workers and contains all of the usual attractions.  While Buzz Carney was the tattooed strongman of the group of sideshow performers, the newest figure is based on the character of Harriet Carney aka Harriet the Horrendously Hairy Housewife.
Harriet is a lovely lady who just happens to have heaps more hair on her chin than most men have under their hats!  This wonderfully whiskered queen of the midway is certainly a looker, and in her time has definitely turned a few heads!  Harriet loves being the matriarch of the Carney family, and lives for performing with them.
Packaging
Harriet picks up where Buzz left off.  The packaging is very similar, with an old-school rustic look to it.  The background story behind the character is reprinted on the rear of the back, and it’s easily displayable with the plastic window front.

July 2007 Action Figures And Comic Books Are Becoming Acceptable Accents In Home Decor

Once a source of nerdy shame, action figures and comic books are becoming acceptable accents in home decor
Mr. Cho, who has sprinkled his living space with action figures and anime creations, is one of a growing number of Canadians who view Spiderman and Transformer toys as acceptable accents to their home decor.
'We've always idolized art in some way: now it's just a Robocop instead of Rodin,' said the 30-year-old video game designer.
It used to be that grown men who collected action figures did so on the down low. If they had their Star Wars figurines on display they were relegated to a 'nerd room,' a private space generally in the basement and always out of sight to guests.
But with the mainstream success of superhero franchises in Hollywood and the nerdification of culture in general, action figures have come out of the closet and are increasingly finding a place of pride on walls and mantels.
'There's sort of a nerd chic thing now,' said Mr. Cho, who did his master's thesis on the action figure as artistic artifact. 'We're not necessarily less cultured, but our focus is different. Pop culture and cross-promotional products are huge.'
Bruno Bornsztein, a designer and founder of Curbly.com, an online community for DIY home decor, agrees that the celebration of all things geek has infiltrated people's homes.
'I have seen more people tricking out their house with comic book stuff,' he said. 'People feel more freedom showing off interests that would have embarrassed them before.'
Part of the reason, he said, is that both comics and action figures have become more visually appealing.
Ratty cartoons have been replaced by bound graphic novels and Star Trek figurines have been bumped off shelves by Japanese Munny dolls.
The line has been blurred, Mr. Bornsztein said, between 'people who are geeky and people who are arty.'
That said, not every action figure he has seen in someone's living room deserved to be there.
'Some of it is really cool aesthetically,' he said. 'But I'm not particularly into the hardcore stuff.'
Jason Beck, a 38-year-old stand-up comedian from Winnipeg who collects Yoda figures, falls into the more extreme category of collectors.

On Cartoon Network Fall 2007 New Transformers: Animated Show!
Entertainment website ICv2 has reported something that we have known to be very possible of happening: that the 'Transformers: Animated' will debut this fall on Cartoon Network. This comes on the heels of the announcement that Entertainment Rights will internationally distribute the cartoon outside of North America. The article states that 'little is known about the new series except for the fact that it will take place in a future era during which humans and robots both inhabit the Earth.

April 2007 Movies may be a boon to comic books?
As of March 25, '300,' a tale about the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in Greece, made $161.7 million at the box office. ''300' has its political overtones, but at heart it's a big, silly, fun movie, with great battle scenes and near-campy dialogue,' wrote film critic Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Other reviewers have alternately praised the film's stunning visual style, one directly based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, and slammed the overblown spectacle and wooden performances.

The box-office numbers are nice but it is not turning into substantial readers. 'Movies don't help comic books. All movies do is help merchandise,' said Sam Papale, owner of Sam's Comics in Meriden.

'There are very few kids collecting comic books. It is mostly guys in their mid to late 30s.'

The comic book industry went through a self-inflicted collapse in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Cote said.

'They had people buying and loving comics and the cost of the old comics went up,' he said.

Collectors, some of whom were not comic book aficionados, stocked up on old material and then released it into the market at once. Surrounded by a glut of material, the books became worthless. People lost interest and readership dried up.

'My first rule: Buy it because you want to read it. If it become worth something someday, bonus,' Cote said.

The comic book companies occasionally tried drastic measures to bring back readers. 'Remember when Superman died. That is a 50-cent book right now,' said Jon Johnson, a collector.

'Pathfinder,' the next big film based on a popular graphic novel, will be released in the United States April 13. The graphic novel is a dark tale of a young Viking boy who was raised by a group of American Indians. When the Vikings return to slaughter his tribe, the boy takes revenge on his assailants.

'It is the rare occasion when we say that it is better than or equal to the book,' Cote said.
'If they can translate it to the screen and keep the integrity, God bless them.'

Comic books aficionados are often times the toughest audiences. Spend an hour in Cote's shop. The conversation among the regulars who come in to pick up the latest weekly comics is often spirited when talk turns to an upcoming film or book.

'The Real Toy Story' rates early installation on the list of best business books of 2007

Don't tell the children, but the North Pole jobs of Santa's elves have been outsourced.
Most of the toys they found under the Christmas tree in December, according to investigative journalist Eric Clark, were made in China's Pearl River Delta. In his provocative new book, The Real Toy Story, Clark calls that part of the world's most-populous country 'Santa's Sweatshop.'
Eighty percent of the world's toys are made there, Clark writes.
'This is where it happens. This is what makes today's toy industry possible. This is where toys are produced for a few cents each by vast numbers of young migrants toiling in sweatshop conditions. This is what makes it possible for the modern toy business to be able to spend such huge sums on marketing. This is the hidden face of the toy industry without which it could not exist,' Clark writes.
Of course, most Western parents do not concern themselves about the conditions under which the toys they buy their children are made.
Clark's stirring portrayal of the abominable conditions in the sweatshops could change some of that complacency. He shows the workers, mostly young women, being forced to work 11- to 12-hour days seven days a week in unsafe, toxic environments and spending the few hours they have off in wretched, crowded dormitories on the factory grounds.
He portrays these women as little better off than prisoners. They are, he shows, trapped in their situations by contracts that require them to pay for their food, lodging and permits, as well as fines for infractions of work rules. They are paid too little to meet their needs and obligations. And they cannot quit, he says, because their pay will be withheld for violating contracts that are never explained to them.
'The difficult truth is that we Western consumers must stop deluding ourselves. We cannot any longer demand ultra-cheap toys and expect at the same time to enjoy clear consciences. To think that we can is as naive as starting to believe in Santa Claus again,' Clark writes.
Although the information in the book's final chapter, 'Santa's Workshop,' is upsetting, it is really anticlimactic. The most disturbing material in this extensively researched book is presented in the preceding chapter, 'Grabbing Them Young.' In it, Clark reveals the lengths to which the big toy companies are going to exploit children's susceptibilities.
'Marketing uses every trick and device that can be mustered. The line between selling and entertainment - on TV, in movies, in games, on the Web - is blurred to the point of near invisibility,' Clark says.
He is particularly alarmed at the age levels now being targeted by toy marketers. A few years ago, he says, it was generally believed that 5 years old was as low as you could go. Then the target ages descended to 3 years and 2 years. But the descent didn't stop there. 'Marketers now grab babies as soon as they are born... . It is not in the spirit of philanthropy that 'Teletubbies' gift packs were distributed to newborns in hospitals,' Clark writes.
Clark also gives intriguing accounts of:
The cutthroat competition between the big toy companies such as Hasbro Inc. and Mattel Inc. and the near extinction of small, innovative toy companies.
The love-hate relationships among big toy-makers and their suppliers and between toy-makers and the big-box retailers, most notably Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp. and Toys R Us Inc.
The struggles of small and specialty toy shops to find a niche and survive.
The origins of Barbie and her wars against Bratz and other dolls.

Update: Mister Cartoon - Lost Angels

Update: Mister Cartoon - Lost Angels

cartoon/detail_shots_pre/Cartoon_full_front_pic_promo_b.jpg >
We previously featured Mister Cartoon's Lost Angels figure from Super Rad Toys on an installment of Proto Monday.  Those initial pictures were of the unpainted master mold and left many wanting to see more.  So, we return with  very detailed pre-production shots of the figure and from the looks of it, this is set to be a standout release.
cartoon/detail_shots_pre/stand_(1)_x.jpg > cartoon/detail_shots_pre/Left_side_detail_m.jpg >
Mr. Cartoon built his well-deserved reptuation on his beautiflly detailed and highly sought after tattoo art. So while the overall figure design, based on Cartoon's established Lost Angels character, is shaping up very nicley, the tattoos are the standout highlight by far.  Judging by these shots, the tattoos on the figure excel both artisticly in faithfully representing Cartoon's art and technically as they appear to be some of the most complex pad prints to date.  The 14' tall figure with flocked white wings  is covered with his signature tattoos on his chest, back, arms, stomach and shoulders.  cartoon/detail_shots_pre/Outside_Left_arm_tattoo_m.jpg > cartoon/detail_shots_pre/Front_tattoo_detail_m.jpg >
The attention to detail has also carried over to the accessories including Joker Brand cut 'n sew clothes, two sets of Mister Cartoon x Nike shoes -- Cortez and Air Force 1's, SA Studios necklace, T-mobile sidekick accessory complete with 180 degree swivel screen,  and a boomboox complete with Mister cartoon tag.

'Super' librarian shares her love for books with West Virginia ... - Huntington Herald Dispatch
How do you know if you have achieved icon status? When an action figure bears your likeness and represents your profession and vocation, you can safely say you have arrived!
Super librarian Nancy Pearl, who has been called 'one lusty librarian' by the Los Angeles Times, inspired and became the model for the Librarian Action Figure, produced by Seattle's Archie McPhee and Company.
Author of 'Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment and Reason,' Pearl presented a program and spoke Tuesday at the annual banquet of the West Virginia Library Association's Annual Conference held this year in Huntington. Originally released in 2003, Pearl's inspired Librarian Action Figure now comes in a deluxe model complete with amazing push-button shushing action, a rolling book cart, computer and desk.
Pearl, who regards the action figure as a tribute to all librarians, is a regular commentator on National Public Radio's 'Morning Edition,' has written a follow-up book 'More Book Lust,' and will visit Charleston, W.Va. later this month during the West Virginia Book Festival
