Hasbro July 2009 New cable network being launched by Discovery Communications and toy giant Hasbro Inc.

Veteran kids programming executive Margaret Loesch has been tapped to run the new cable network being launched by Discovery Communications and toy giant Hasbro Inc.
LOESCHThe unnamed channel, which is set to launch late next year, has already drawn a fair amount of criticism from media watchdogs because of Hasbro's involvement. The well-regarded Loesch, who ran Fox Broadcasting's kids programming unit during its 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers'and 'X-Men' heyday, says the channel won't be a shill for Hasbro products.
'They understand this can't be a channel devoted to toys. . . . That would not succeed,' Loesch said, adding that if Hasbro didn't embrace that, 'I would not have taken this job.'
The channel, which is taking the slot currently occupied by Discovery Kids, should launch in about 60 million homes. It will face intense competition from already-entrenched networks including Viacom's Nickelodeon, Disney's Disney Channel and its new Disney XD and Time Warner's Cartoon Network
Loesch, who also ran the Hallmark Channel for Crown Media and most recently has been producing movies, says that while the cable competition is intense, she is just as concerned about all the other media platforms she'll be facing off against besides traditional TV.
'When we built Fox Kids, they were primarily watching television; now we have to make sure we provide an experience on all these different platforms,' she said.

Hasbro and Cartoon Network Nov 2007 Animated Movie
There’s more than meets the eye when Cartoon Network premieres a 90-minute feature presentation of Transformers Animated Movie “Transform and Roll Out!” on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at 8 p.m. (ET, PT). The adventure begins when Optimus Prime and his small crew of Autobots come into possession of the AllSpark, a powerful Cybertronian artifact that attracts the attention of their long-forgotten enemies, the Decepticons, and sends them crashing to a strange and distant planet known as Earth.

The movie kicks off the brand new series, Transformers Animated, set to premiere on Cartoon Network Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (ET, PT). Set on Earth in the near future in Detroit, the series begins when the alien Transformers are thrust into a world populated by humans and automatons. As visitors to Earth, the Transformers --Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Prowl, Bulkhead and Ratchet-- work in the human world, interacting with the ‘natives’ in exciting and humorous ways. Following the Autobots across the galaxy to their new home, is the megalomaniacal Megatron and his army of ruthless Decepticons, a brutal race of war-mongering robots who seek to use the AllSpark as their ultimate weapon of destruction!

The Autobots unlikely guide through Earth society is a brash, energetic 8-year-old girl named Sari Sumdac, the adopted daughter of a robotics magnate. Setting the Autobots up with their headquarters in an old abandoned auto plant on the outskirts of town, Sari not only becomes an “honorary Autobot” by enlightening them on such mysteries of Earth life such as megamalls, holovision, hoverboards, junk food, and basic hanging out, but also becomes a vital component of the team in their adventures. For the AllSpark endows Sari with a very special power, one the Decepticons would love to get their hands on, not to mention the AllSpark itself.

Transformers Animated is jointly developed by Cartoon Network and Hasbro, Inc. and is co-produced by Cartoon Network Studios. Matt Youngberg (Teen Titans, The Batman) is supervising director, Derrick Wyatt (Teen Titans) provides the character designs and Sam Register (Ben 10, Teen Titans) serves as executive producer of the series. Marty Isenberg (Danny Phantom., X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) acts as head writer.

Hasbro and HPG, its licensing division, will expand the action-packed Transformers Animated series through toys, games, licensed merchandise and promotions around the world.

Carnival Cartoons Nov 2007 The Carneys - Harriet Carney - review

The guys behind Carnival Cartoons, Jared Deal and Garnet Syberg-Olsen, introduced us to The Carneys back in early 2006.  The line revolves around a group of carnival workers and contains all of the usual attractions.  While Buzz Carney was the tattooed strongman of the group of sideshow performers, the newest figure is based on the character of Harriet Carney aka Harriet the Horrendously Hairy Housewife.
Harriet is a lovely lady who just happens to have heaps more hair on her chin than most men have under their hats!  This wonderfully whiskered queen of the midway is certainly a looker, and in her time has definitely turned a few heads!  Harriet loves being the matriarch of the Carney family, and lives for performing with them.
Harriet picks up where Buzz left off.  The packaging is very similar, with an old-school rustic look to it.  The background story behind the character is reprinted on the rear of the back, and it’s easily displayable with the plastic window front.

Hasbro Nov 2007 Tries To Quash Uproar Over Gi Joe And His Movie Networkworld.com
In an attempt to put out a wildfire that threatens to grow into a full -blown conflagration, Hasbro today tried to put down rumors that the upcoming GI Joe movie will water down the US Marine-based action figure into a international light-weight based in Brussels.
Specifically the uproar comes over the GI Joe movie that Paramount is developing for release next year. It seems that Paramount and Hasbro, which makes GI Joe, have gotten a little nervous about marketing a film with such obvious ties to the US Military, particularly when that military is involved in two wars, Iraq and Afghanistan. Rumors floated that the film was going to bastardize the GI Joe franchise to the 'Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity', (GIJOE). Joe would be a multinational force dude rather than a mean Marine.
But the outrage over that potential wholesale change is palpable. This from the Army Times Web site:
'I think what Paramount and Hasbro is doing to GI Joe (an AMERICAN icon) is absolutely awful. This is the epitome of corporate greed and destroys the foundation in the belief in the American Way. This is an honored US Marine, who stands for American patriotism and strength. Changing this character to be an International Patsy is ridiculous and Paramount, Viacom and Hasbro should be ashamed at even the idea of taking away this American Hero from our Children and undermines every person in our Armed Forces who fight to protect our Country. If they want an International Hero ..... they should make up their own!!!!!!.'
And another comment from The Fedora Lounge blog:
'They are doing it for the market power of the brand, completely changing its definition. Capitalism at its best. Everything that seems to be solely American Government or American Military is taboo. This is to make the move more internationally digestible, thus its suckage factor will go through the roof. I think Ill watch all the cartoons on DVD and skip this 'remake' altogether.'
While that idea has many folks up in arms, it really shouldn't come as a great surprise that Hasbro might tweak GI Joe's image. It has done so many times before. Over the years though GI Joe has included other countries and fighters from all manner of military organizations so it might not be such a big surprise that the movie take that in to consideration.
On the GI Joe Web site it says: 'GI Joe as a product has assumed many different faces over the years - from military hero to adventurer to Adventure Team member, to Super Joe, to the smaller but no less powerful Real American Hero (which itself changed over time), to Sgt. Savage, to GI Joe: Extreme, and back to 12' GI Joe action figures. There has never been a toy that has had the complex history of G.I. JOE, and there hasn't been a boy's toy, aside perhaps from trains, that have lasted as long. Hasbro has kept G.I. JOE on the market nearly continuously since 1964, with the exception of a few years between the retirement of the classic vintage GI Joe in 1976 and the introduction of the new ‘A Real American Hero ' in 1982. This has not always been an easy task.'

Los Angeles Toy, Doll and Amusements Museum Nov 2007 Beyond Ultraman, Seven Artists Explore the Vinyl Frontier - TAXI Design Network

On view through 06 Jan, 2008

A longtime generator of American counterculture, California has become the landing site for Asian vinyl toy culture as well.

Beyond Ultraman examines the vinyl art toy landscape as seen in the work of seven California artists who reflect that movement, turning art into toys and vice versa.

Through originality, wit, flippancy and brilliance, each artist in the exhibition has elevated the vinyl art toy movement and captured the attention of two audiences: the mainstream art community and the toy community.

Featuring the work of Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, David Gonzales, David Horvath, Sun-Min Kim, Brian McCarty and Mark Nagata, Beyond Ultraman is a collaboration between the PMCA and the Los Angeles Toy, Doll and Amusements Museum (LATDA).

Vinyl Toy Network's Urban Underground Project Aug 2007 report

We already showed you photos of Wheaty Wheat's booth at the Vinyl Toy Network's Urban Underground Project show, but there were several other booths at The FactoryMimoco was celebrating the 2nd birthday of mimobot - they were introduced at Comic Con 2005.  Cake anyone?
The event got down to the roots of the vinyl and designer toy genre.  The small venue made for a nice relief from the crazy crowds at the San Diego Convention Center...even if there were AC issues...and the number of artists who were on site was great.  With Comic Con continuing to grow, will VTN be the place to go to get your vinyl fix?  Only time will tell.

Vinyl Toy Network July 2007 Presents First Annual Urban Underground Project

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) July 16, 2007 -- The Vinyl Toy Network ( www.vinyltoynetwork.com - VTN) www.vinyltoynetwork.com was created as a method of gathering vendors and artists who have the same passion and appreciation for the art form that is also known as designer or urban vinyl toys. VTN's purpose is to create a forum where both vendors and artists can showcase under one roof without the crazy chaos that bigger, non-vinyl toy conventions can usually be. One of our primary goals is to make it very affordable for vendors and artists to show in a specialized venue such as the VTN. This in turn, also makes it convenient for the collectors of art, vinyl toys and street couture to come to one location and find all the figures, artworks and clothing that they have been looking for.
Urban Underground Project (UUP) was developed by VTN as a supplement to the San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC) that takes place every July at the San Diego Convention Center. VTN felt that the 'urban culture' needed a venue that would distinguish it from the huge, mostly comic convention that SDCC has grown to be. At the UUP, attendees will find an event that focuses on the 'urban culture' which has become the breeding grounds for such genres as vinyl toys, 'low brow' art, DJ music and street couture (ie: designer hoodies, t-shirts and sneakers).
This will be an event that attendees of SDCC will not want to miss! And with the price of admission being FREE and a FREE shuttle bus there is no excuse not to be there!
The 2007 UUP roster of vendors are the following (in alphabetical order):
  • 3D Retro

JAKKS 2006 ROCKY Meat: the Action Figure - Well Fed Network

Now I’ve seen everything. The manufacturer Jakks has a series of action figures based on the Rocky movie series starring Sylvester Stallone.
Not only are there multiple versions of Rocky, in different outfits and in various degrees of punch drunkenness, but there are also figures of brother-in-law Paulie, trainer Mickey, rival-turned-pal Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang (Mr. T) and—get this—broadcaster Brent Musberger.
But the real star of the set is a slab of beef. Yes, the slab of beef that Rocky punched in the original 1976 film now has its own action figure. It even comes with an eye hook for hanging and a blood-stained white butcher’s coat. Go figure

Well fear not! Banpresto have the solution for all you stressed gamers out there; stress mushrooms! Just like stress balls, stress mushrooms (and one stress block) are squishy and ‘squeezy’ allowing you to go all out on them and they will still bounce back and take some more later on!

Spin Master Jan 2007 Nelvana Spins New Toy Deal - Animation World Network

Nelvana Spins New Toy Deal
Animation World Network, CA -
Nelvana and Spin Master Ltd. have teamed up on a line of specialty toys and games developed from two new animated action adventure series. The toys and games from the animated series DI-GATA DEFENDERS and BAKUGAN, which is in production and will begin airing in 2007, are set to make their debut at the Spin Master booth at the Canadian Toy & Hobby Fair on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto (Booth #602). Both companies, headquartered in Toronto, are working together to market and promote the toys.

The first collaborative property is DI-GATA DEFENDERS, a 2D action-adventure series for kids 6-11. A ratings' success since it premiered on TELETOON in Aug. 2006, DI-GATA follows four young heroes on their quest to find four pure stones and to recast the 'spell of binding,' restoring order to the realm of RaDos. The series has also been sold in France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Latin America, India and Australia, with more international sales imminent.

Spin Master has signed on as master toy licensee for DI-GATA and is producing a game, which includes action figures, dice and trading cards, replicating the battles from the TV series. The dice game will hit store shelves in Canada in March 2007, with apparel, interactive and accessories to follow in coming months.

The second property, BAKUGAN, a co-production between Nelvana, Spin Master, Sega Toys, TMS and Japan Vistec, is a 2D traditional series in the anime style, which tells the story of Dan and his friends as they battle their Bakugan Brawlers to save Vestroia and ultimately Earth from destruction. It's for kids 6-11 and 52x30 episodes of the show are being produced.

Spin Master will be producing and distributing the BAKUGAN merchandise line globally, excluding Asia. The game features marble-like balls and metallic playing cards that are used to transform the balls into multiple collectible characters. Players can compete against various opponents and select from a wide range of strategy options. This, combined with the card game features, hopes to create an entertainment brand with depth and long-term potential. The toys have already been released in Japan and have become a massive hit.

'Nelvana is very excited to join forces with Spin Master in the development of these two fantastic properties,' said Doug Murphy, president, Nelvana Enterprises. 'It is especially exciting given the evident synergies stemming from our Canadian connection. This partnership will certainly produce two of the most successful action/adventure properties we have seen in some time.'

'The collaboration of energetic entertainment and innovative product is vital to engaging children,' said Ronnen Harary, chairman/ceo, Spin Master Ltd. 'Spin Master is thrilled to partner with Nelvana to bring life to these incredibly exciting action-adventure properties.'

Nelvana is part of Corus Ent. Inc., a Canadian-based media and entertainment company. For more information, visit www.corusent.com.

Mr. Cartoon built his well-deserved reptuation on his beautiflly detailed and highly sought after tattoo art. So while the overall figure design, based on Cartoon's established Lost Angels character, is shaping up very nicley, the tattoos are the standout highlight by far.  Judging by these shots, the tattoos on the figure excel both artisticly in faithfully representing Cartoon's art and technically as they appear to be some of the most complex pad prints to date.  The 14' tall figure with flocked white wings  is covered with his signature tattoos on his chest, back, arms, stomach and shoulders.  cartoon/detail_shots_pre/Outside_Left_arm_tattoo_m.jpg > cartoon/detail_shots_pre/Front_tattoo_detail_m.jpg >
The attention to detail has also carried over to the accessories including Joker Brand cut 'n sew clothes, two sets of Mister Cartoon x Nike shoes -- Cortez and Air Force 1's, SA Studios necklace, T-mobile sidekick accessory complete with 180 degree swivel screen,  and a boomboox complete with Mister cartoon tag.

Seen: Vinyl Toy Network (12.10.06)

The first annual Vinyl Toy Network Holiday Show was held this past Sunday (12.10.06) at the Pasadena Convention Center.  Lured by the chance to get one of the 100 VTN gift bags, people lined up at least a half-hour before the 9:30 AM start time.  The bag was loaded with stickers, an Alpha Cult T-shirt, several minifigs (Unipo, Qee, Invisible Plan figure), tokidoki fan, lots of magazines and more.
The turnout was quite strong and people wasted no time to start their shopping by picking up Chris Lee's Cleabus figure -- the first Urbanite released by Wheaty Wheat Studios.  Chris was on-hand for this release event to sign figures and sketch for collectors.  Congrats Chris!

Popular Line of Evangelion Inspired Figures Takes Flight with A-15 Arael-XX

Torrance, CA, November 13, 2006 – Yamato USA, the North American division of the Yamato Toy Group with headquarters in the otaku capital of the world - the Akihabara district of Tokyo, Japan, is pleased to announce the opening of pre-orders for “Sequel to Angel Chromosome-XX” Series 1: A-15 Arael –XX, the continuation of WAVE’s popular line of Evangelion inspired figures.

“Sequel to Angel Chromosome-XX” Series 1: A-15 Arael-XX

The Angel's may be gone, but the threat lives on... With their latest diabolical plan, NERVE recklessly intends to cross human DNA with that of the Angels. The plan: Project-XX. The results: Angel Chromosome-XX.

Japanese collectible manufacturer WAVE in collaboration with GAINAX and Kannon Yoshizaki continues to bring the next chapter in the Evangelion saga to figural life with “Sequel to Angel Chromosome-XX” Series 1: A-15 Arael-XX. Joining previous experiments A-03 Sachiel-XX, A-14 Zeruel-XX, A-17 Tabris-XX, and A-02 Lilith-XX, Arael-XX measures approximately 5.15' and is depicted impaled with the Lance of Longinus which brought about her demise as an Angel. Arael-XX comes with detachable display base packaged in a collector's style window box with multiple views so that she can be appreciated without having to be removed... good news for die-hard collectors.

Playmates Toys With The Land Before Time

September 15, 2006

Universal Studios Consumer Products Group and Playmates Toys announced a domestic licensing agreement, whereby Playmates will serve as the master toy licensee for the upcoming animated television series, THE LAND BEFORE TIME. The 22-minute animated series will air on Cartoon Network beginning spring 2007. The toy line will launch in fall 2007 with the introduction of a full line of figures, vehicles, playsets and plush.

THE LAND BEFORE TIME television series is in development by Universal Studios Family Prods. Stripping five days a week, 26 episodes will bring the prehistoric world to more than 88 million homes in the U.S. The series is being shopped to international distributors.

THE LAND BEFORE TIME Playmates toy lineup will include figural toys and vehicles, interactive toys and plush targeting kids 3-7.

Michael Rinzler, vp of marketing at Playmates, commented, 'This is an amazingly rich and endearing property that lends itself perfectly to a broad line of figures, plush and other toys. It's an exciting opportunity because this is the first time children will be able to see THE LAND BEFORE TIME on television on a daily basis.'

In addition to the television series, two new direct-to-DVD titles are slated to release over the next 24 months, and Cartoon Network episodes will be available on DVD starting in 2007.

Licensing opportunities are now available from Universal Studios Consumer Products Group across all categories including apparel, accessories, interactive games, collectibles, fine art, home furnishings, health and beauty aids, food and beverages, gifts, stationery products and wireless communication devices and accessories.

Set in prehistoric times, the series follows the journeys of young dinosaurs who experience wondrous adventures, encounter challenging obstacles and learn memorable life lessons about love, trust, friendship, learning, caring and sharing. The cast of dinosaur characters includes Littlefoot, the lovable long neck Apatosaurus; Cera, the feisty three-horn Triceratops; Ducky, the naive duckbill swimmer Parasaurolophus; Petrie, the comic flyer Pterodactyl; Chomper, the newly hatched friendly fearless Tyrannosauraus; and Spike the ravenous spiketail Stegosaurus.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2006, Playmates Toys Inc. is among the most well respected and innovative marketing and distribution companies in the global toy industry with a proven history in both the creation of innovative and imaginative products as well as the development and management of profitable, long-term brand franchises.
