About Drastic Plastic    
Founded by David S. Reeves, Drastic Plastic was formed in the 1990's to create action figures for collectors. David had the grand plan to create a line of "Space Marine"-style figures and aliens that were not subject to mass-market limitations of the time for the growing adult collector base. These figures would be by adults for adults - with no child testing, the sky would be the limit: metal parts, sharp bits, glow-in-the-dark paints, and more. However, there was one fatal flaw in this logic at the time. The costs to bring a line to market are CRUSHINGLY LARGE.

What makes a toyline so expensive? Every aspect of the process means you have to pay someone. A rough guideline would be: creating the designs for a product; making drawings from those designs that will work as toys; having someone sculpt the design; engineering the action features and accessories of the toys; having steel molds created from the sculptures; designing the packaging and sales strategies; paying for the production of the figures; quality controlling the produced items; having the items packaged and shipped to a warehouse; and finally, convincing a third-party to buy your merchandise and sell it somewhere.

Of course, the above is very simplified. There are many levels of intricacy to the process. Drastic Plastic had a simple strategy for their first line, which was titled "Hard Corps". Knowing that the collector fanbase read magazines such as Lee's Action Figure News and Toy Review and Tomart's Action Figure Digest, they focused their advertising in that direction.

One of the great collector gambits of all time was the Star Wars "Early Bird" offer. Drastic Plastic would do something similar. To pay for the required molds, DP would sell 1,000 sets of nine figures at $100 per set (later to be raised to $200 per set). With this $100,000, molds could be cut for a full production run. However, even if the full 1000 sets had been sold, this would not have been enough cash to make a full production run.

It is not known how many sets were sold through this offer, but what is known is that DP mysteriously disappeared after taking payments from a number of people. It took intervention from governmental authorities and Tomart's to cause the release of some "Mission: Equinox" Hard Corps sets. It is unknown how many sets were actually produced and sent out to the early adopters.

Later, Drastic Plastic would become infamous for creating a 12-inch figure of Adolph Hitler: review at Michael Crawford's review site. The second figure in this series, FDR, would be released (with proposed Stalin, Churchill, Mussolini and Hirohito figures never making it to market), as well as a General Custer figure, before Drastic Plastic disappeared again.

Smoby Dec 2007 sells two plants - Plastics & Rubber Weekly
French toymaker Smoby-Majorette has sold two of its plants although the future of the company remains unclear as the firm is still in receivership.
The company’s extrusion blow moulding plant in Moirans-en-Montagne, France, was sold to European packaging company RPC Group. Its plant in Noeux-les-Mines was bought by Stard, a packaging company based in Yveslines, France.
Smoby-Majorette has been in receivership since October, when a French court rejected a recovery plan proposed by MGA Entertainment, a Californian-based toy company that had purchased the company for one euro ($1.45) in May.
RPC headquartered in Northamptonshire, England, said it bought the Moirans-en-Montagne plant, for “less than £1 million” ($2 million). It agreed to make the purchase only after Smoby’s administrators cut 21 jobs in Moirans; the plant now employs 52.
RPC added that the Moirans plant generated sales of about £12 million ($24 million) annually until earlier this year, when its performance suffered under Smoby-Majorette’s financial uncertainty.
Chris Sworn, RPC finance director, said: “This [Moirans plant] is a very efficient producer and we hope that it has not lost too much of the market and that we can rebuild the business.”
The plant, which has been renamed RPC Emballages Moirans, runs around 10 extrusion blow moulding lines making high density polyethylene and polypropylene containers. RPC has 13 blow moulding plants located across Europe.
The Noeux-les-Mines plant, which Stard purchased, employs about 65 people. Stard also owns glass and plastic bottles producer Sted Flaconnage of Ozoir-la-Ferrière, France.

Toys 'R' Us Dec 2007 won't sell plastic food for now - Detroit Free Press

A  spokeswoman for Toys 'R' Us said Wednesday that the company will pull from store shelves a tub of toy food items while an independent test on the toys is completed.
The move follows a column in Wednesday's Free Press and on MotorCityMoms.com about toxic chemicals found in several toys sold at stores around the country. Among them was a plastic ice cream cone found to contain lead, arsenic, mercury and chromium in an analysis by the Ann Arbor-based nonprofit Ecology Center.
The cone was among the items in the 'Just Like Home' container sold at Toys 'R' Us stores in metro Detroit.
Kathleen Waugh of Toys 'R' Us, based in New Jersey, said the Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, an independent testing agency, will conduct the inspections and toy testing.

Dec 2007 Plastic Clamshell Packaging Not Fun At Present-Opening Time!
Few things detract more from the spontaneity and joy of the season's gift-opening rituals than prying open a plastic package with your teeth.
Countless gift items, from consumer electronics to toys, look so appealing while entombed in their clear-plastic clamshell packaging. But extricating an action figure, and cutting thick plastic seams sealed together with heat, can seem like an endeavor worthy of the Jaws of Life. Even less extreme packaging has drawbacks. A cardboard box with a plastic window, for example, may display merchandise nicely. But items are often anchored with painfully twisted wires and rubber bands that seem impossible to untangle.Manufacturers say retailers love -- and even insist upon -- the hard-to-open packaging as a measure to reduce theft. Shoplifters cost retailers, and ultimately consumers, $13.3 billion in 2006, the most recent year for which information is available, according to a survey conducted by the University of Florida for the National Retail Federation in Washington. The protective packaging also makes products visually pleasing and protects them during shipping, say manufacturers. Frustrated consumers can now even purchase tools, such as Package Shark Pro and OpenX, designed for opening impenetrable plastic.
To test the consumer-friendliness of theft-resistant, protective packaging, we tried to open five randomly selected gift items without using sharp implements -- at least at the outset -- and timed our progress. We matched our testers with items appropriate for their ages, and provided assistance to our child-age testers only when it seemed necessary. We learned it's nearly impossible to open many items without a sharp implement, so keep scissors or an opening tool handy during holiday festivities, and bring one if you're a guest. Remove toys from their original packaging if they contain numerous small pieces and box them on your own, or you may ruin the moment by having to untangle a mess of wires. We wasted almost 15 minutes opening one such toy.
Our 11-year-old tester was drawn to a set of motion-activated drumsticks, mi Jam Drummer, in a plastic clamshell package. Opening the electronic toy without using a sharp implement seemed impossible. We could not tear the thick sealed edges. Cutting with our scissors was even difficult. Once we snipped open a corner, we again tried tearing, but had to be careful of sharp points along edges of the plastic. A spokesman for mi Jam manufacturer Blue Box Toys Inc., in Livingston, N.J., said the packaging offers both security and visual appeal, but the company is modifying it next year to a box with a window-type opening.

Each quarter's earnings season brings an unusual highlight for me: watching executives plagued by unfavorable news try to spin a brighter version of their company's gloomy story. After a string of recalls over the past few months harmed its reputation as a toymaker and cost its shareholders $40 million, you have to wonder what good news Mattel (NYSE: MAT) could possibly find in this quarter's conference call. Yet management still stood proud, flashing a toothy grin as it tried to enlighten analysts on how marvelously things are going.
Of course, executives never come to a conference call without their best game face, not to mention an armload of convincing spin on any bad news. But for once, wouldn't it just be refreshing if they quit whitewashing and faced facts? A rosy outlook from this toymaker just isn't believable; as my Foolish compadre Rick Munarriz noted, Mattel's got issues.
Not too long ago, Mattel had a good story to tell, reporting impressive results. Though the company wasn't playing around, numerous recalls bred distrust among its customers. In this quarter's conference call, CEO Robert Eckert stated that negative impressions about the toymaker 'have clearly bottomed out.' That's far less clear to me, since overall sales rose mainly because of favorable currency translations from overseas revenue, rather than increased sales volumes.
At least the company hasn't yet make a boneheaded play like RC2 (Nasdaq: RCRC) did by sending out lead-tainted gifts as an apology. If it can avoid such blunders, maybe Mattel can actually turn things around, and thrive like it did last holiday season. Maybe -- but not anytime soon, given Mattel's latest numbers.
While overall sales weren't impressive, international performance still looked robust compared with domestic figures. However, the company is facing a potential hole of more than $44 million this holiday season, if Brazil doesn't approve its export licenses soon. The South American country accounts for about 2% of Mattel's fourth-quarter sales. The country suspended its licenses and banned imports from the toymaker pending an investigation into the company's compliance with local safety regulations.
It's also under fire here at home for a holier-than-thou attitude with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which alleges that Mattel routinely ignores rules requiring it to report problems within 24 hours of becoming aware of them.
Mattel's margins are getting squeezed, and any increases realized in brands like Fisher-Price resulted only from weak U.S. currency. Back that out, and even foreign markets, where 40% of the company's revenues originate, look bleaker than Mattel's 'What, me worry?' stance would suggest.

X-Ray Films' documentary on the designer toy scene is entitled Toys Are Us: A Revolution in Plastic.  The short film has been chosen as an official selection in NYC's E.Vil. City Film Festival, which takes place October 3rd through the 8th.

Aug 2007 Keep the plastic toys out of the refrigerator

FROM: Office of the Director, Family Intelligence Agency
TO: All Family Members
RE: Restricted Items, Updated List
The director of the Family Intelligence Agency (aka 'Mom') has determined that the kitchen's chronic shortage of plastic containers for the storage of leftover food is due to the overuse of aforesaid containers in the experimental freezing of plastic action figurines.
The information behind this finding is as follows: Yesterday, upon accessing the lower portion of the refrigerator for items necessary to her restorative evening beverage, Mom found buried in the ice bucket her long-sought Tupperware-brand Stuffables® 1.4 liter bowl.
A forensic examination aided by Senior Investigator Peanut the Beagle determined that this bowl contained approximately 1.2 liters of frozen clear liquid, presumably water; meatloaf residue; and a 4-inch Han Solo action figure, minus its head.
Further freezer excavation produced a 750 ml Stuffables®, a 4-quart plastic casserole of uncertain origin, and two separate two-cup containers thought to have once contained takeout Chinese food. These contained further frozen liquid, and, respectively, small representations of Iron Man, The Flash, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and a weasel.
Questioned as to the purpose of freezing toy superheroes, family operatives Andrew, 9, and Daniel, 8, responded that the enjoyment to be had from such activity was, in their view, self-evident, except in the case of those unfortunate enough to be 'clueless.' Accordingly, the director has added food storage containers to the list of items whose use is restricted to adults, or to children or beagles in possession of an authorization signed by the director or her designated representative.
(NOTE: the signature of the assistant director for information, aka 'Dad,' is NOT sufficient for use of restricted items, due to his incrimination in past incidents with unfortunate resolutions.)
Other items currently on the restricted-use list include: batteries, tape, glue, toilet plungers, fireplace tools, tape measures, flashlights, firewood, bubble bath, credit cards – both expired and current, retractable leashes, the food processor, pitchforks, and everything used in last Thursday's flight of the cat in the radio-controlled blimp.
Pursuant to appeal by Andrew, breakfast cereal has been removed from the list, but only in circumstances dealing with nutrition. Its use as pillow stuffing remains strictly prohibited.
The director retains the right to place items on the list without consultation and to punish those who misuse things that should have been on the list, but weren't.
Thank you for your efforts to make our family the best it can be. While you're at it, put down that water balloon.

X-Ray Films July 2007 Toys Are Us: A Revolution In Plastic DVD

X-Ray Films new documentary on designer vinyl toys - Toys Are Us: A Revolution In Plastic - will be released on DVD at this summer's San Diego Comic Con International.
The movie explores the creative, sophisticated, and oftentimes challenging world of designer vinyl toys through the eyes of the designers and collectors who help create it. The film features interviews with such
artists as Frank Kozik, Patrick Ma, Tara McPherson, Kano, Erick Scarecrow, Mark Nagata, Brian Flynn, Mars-1, Jermaine Rogers, J Neth and more, as well as collectors and fans.
Toys Are Us was filmed on location at the artists' and collectors' homes and studios, various toy stores, and SDCC 2006, and features a soundtrack with music by Mindless Self Indulgence, Longway, Brian McCarty, Stick Shift, and I, Synthesist.
The DVD will be released on July 25th, 2007, at SDCC, where it will be available exclusively at the Toy Tokyo booth. Following the convention, the film can be ordered directly through the X-Ray Films web site.

June 2007 Plastic Toxic?
Imagine you're a parent who has done all the right things - you've properly installed the car seat, safety-proofed the house and made sure there's not a potentially toxic vinyl toy within a quarter mile of the nursery - only to find out that danger may be lurking right under your baby's nose.

Plastic baby bottles are the latest product to come under scrutiny from environmental health advocates, following a report issued earlier this year by the environmental advocacy group Environment California.
The report found that five different brands of plastic bottles were leaching a toxic chemical known as Bisphenol A or BPA, which has been linked to abnormalities in the mammary and prostate glands and the eggs of laboratory animals. The group did not test plastic baby bottle liners.
The results of the study are still being debated. Some argue that the report did not study 'real world' uses of baby bottles and say products would never be subjected to the kind of heat stresses researchers used. But the findings were enough to cause a run on glass baby bottles. Many parents, it seems, weren't willing to take a chance on plastic.
Until recently, old fashioned glass baby bottles were practically extinct. These clunky relics were seen as obsolete when compared with newer, lighter plastic bottles. But now glass bottles are hard to find for a different reason. They're selling out at baby stores across the country, including Fletcher's for Children in Eugene.
``We didn't even really stock glass bottles (until recently),'' says owner Ron Fletcher, who has seen monthly sales increase from a few to a few dozen.
San Francisco has been the epicenter of the baby bottle controversy. Last year, the city nearly enacted a ban on children's products containing BPA, but decided to hold off until the state Legislature weighed in. A bill just passed the California Assembly and is headed to Senate for further debate.
Environment California's study, titled 'Toxic Baby Bottles,' found that heated baby bottles leached BPA at levels that were found to cause harm in laboratory animals.
The chemical, which mimics estrogen, is also found in toys, food can liners, electronics and some anti-cavity sealants for teeth. According to Environment California, low doses of BPA have been linked to cancer, impaired immune function, early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes and hyperactivity.
'What we're advocating for is that (manufacturers) make baby products that don't (contain toxins that) mimic hormones,' says Dan Jacobson, the group's legislative director. 'There should be no toxic chemicals in baby products.'
There is a lawsuit pending in California seeking class action status against the makers of plastic baby bottles. The suit was filed on behalf of a 5-year-old boy from the San Francisco Bay area. The attorney, the Los Angeles Times reported, said the boy suffered harm to his reproductive system related to the use of plastic bottles.

Editors say: Plastic Culture explores the world of toys: why we love them, what they represent, and why there is a growing market for 'designer' and 'art' toys aimed at adults.Plastic toys based on Japanese comics, movies, and TV shows, from Astro Boy, Godzilla, and Gatchaman, to Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, and Pokémon have had a powerful effect on the imaginations and markets of the West, and have kick-started trends in design and pop culture that have crossed from Japan to the West and back East again. I bought the book on an afternoon when i was in need of easy and shallow reading.

But it proved to be much better than i expected. The author argues that the current fascination for designers toys/urban vinyl is not about regression or infnatilism.

It's a mix of a 'journey from wishspace to reality', an object that triggers memories and as such it becomes a part of its owner, cultural objects shaped by the values and obsessions of the society that produced them and have recently become art pieces of a new genre.

Designers vinyls are now sold in limited editions, snapped up by collectors and are exhibited in art galleries.  Ultraman toys from the '70s and Garon vintage tin wind-up by Osaka Tin Toy The book takes a look at the history of plastic toys, starting with the post-WWII period and the first plastic dolls manufactured by Ideal Novelty and Toy Company.

McDonald's has understood the potential of giving away free toys with their Happy Meal menus.

They started as early as 1977 and the success of the scheme has turned the fast food giant into one of the largest distributors of toys in the world. Choco-eggs The role of TV and character merchandising in disseminating culture was very important in Japan as well but the phenomenon of plastic toys took a more exciting turn in the '80s, the decade when the word otaku started to get used in the country.

Phoenix examined (a bit superficially imho) the social background of otaku and the emergence of 'garage kits.' In the beginning of the '80s young enthusiasts started making reproductions of characters from old animes, manga and special-effect movies first for their own use then they opened a studio at Kaiyodo.

In 1999 though Kayiodo broke through the otaku barrier when they collaborated with confectionary company Furuta to produce the Choco Egg, each of the chocolate egg contains a limited-edition miniature model of an animal.

The success was so big that Choco Egg speciality stores opened and fans started to trade duplicate or rare models.

 After the long introduction on the history of toy culture for adults, the author proceeds by spotlighting several of the most famous designers of urban vinyl: starting with Michael Lau and Eric So who customized standard GI Joe action figures and turned them into either 'gardeners' or Bruce Lee figures.

Bounty Hunter, Presspop Gallery, Junko Mizuno, etc.  My sweet dog pull toy by Yoshitomo Nara and Murakami plushes The most fascinating chapter for me was 'The Toy as Art'.

Takashi Murakami's view in particular. He believes that his plushes and figurines work both as fine art and toys, adding that the consumer groups for these will be different, 'but it is the same aesthetic form in the end.

OKK Trading April 2007 CPSC recalls plastic dolls

Two dolls sold at Dollar stores across the country are being recalled because of their potential to be a choking hazard for children.

WASHINGTON D.C.: Two dolls sold at Dollar stores across the country are being recalled because of their potential to be a choking hazard for children.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and OKK Trading Inc. on Wednesday announced the voluntary recall of about 3,500 'Lovely Baby' and 'Happy Baby' plastic dolls.
Officials say the dolls contain small parts, which can be a choking hazard.
No injuries or incidents have been reported as a result.
The dolls come in different sizes ranging from six to 11 inches tall. Some dolls come in a basket and have a baby bottle and some sing when pressed on the abdominal area. The dolls come in a clear plastic bag sealed at the top with a cardboard label that reads 'Lovely Baby' or 'Happy Baby.'
The dolls were sold for $1 nationwide at Dollar stores from September 2006 through October 2006.
Consumers should take these dolls away from children. The dolls should be returned to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

MGA March 2007 Another AntiBratz Rant - Trash the plastic slappers

SO THIS is the end product - little girls dressed as sex bait.
This is what the manufacturer of one of the most successful children's toys ever is really turning out.
It's an intelligent parent's nightmare – and a pervert's dream. Bratz are childlike dolls – all big eyes and big heads – packaged as hookers. They have pouting lips, bare midriffs, plunging tops, tiny skirts and skimpy lingerie in black and pink.
The dolls look like tarts and you can buy the clothes to make your little girl look just the same at any number of fashion outlets. Who would want to do that? Well, apparently lots of people would. Department stores aren't known for stocking stuff that no one will want to buy.
And these pictures show just how easy it is to find sexualised children's fashion in the stores.
What are they thinking of, these mothers who turn their little girls into sex kittens?
They're certainly not thinking of them as children. And they're not thinking of the danger – emotional and physical – to which they are exposing their daughters.
As for who would buy the dolls, well, Bratz outsells Barbie by two to one and has about 40 per cent of the $250 million-a-year UK doll market.
When my daughters (now 14 and 11) were at the doll stage, I loathed the then-popular Barbie. She was vain and emptyheaded – everything I didn't want my girls to be. Any Barbie that crossed our threshold came to an accidental but murderous end.
I didn't rage, because that would have made her more appealing, but I conspired with my daughters to mock her until the day she met her unlamented end – by chance melted on the stove, thrown out with the rubbish or abandoned somewhere.
I never realised what mild stuff she was until I came across the trash marketed by UK Bratz distributor Vivid Imagination. Frankly, Bratz dolls make Barbie look like a Brownie.
MGA Entertainment, the family owned California firm that launched Bratz in June 2001, earns about $4 billion a year from the slapper dolls and their accessories.
And where one manufacturer fishes successfully, others will follow, no matter how dirty the water.
In 2005, Asda was condemned by child welfare groups for marketing black lacy underwear to nine-year-old girls. In 2003, Bhs was forced to withdraw its Little Miss Naughty range – which included thongs and padded bras and was aimed at under-tens – after campaigners called for a boycott of the store. It beggars belief that such stuff – push-up bras and high heels – ever make the shelves.
Who were these designers and marketeers who sat around the table cold-bloodedly sexualising little girls for profit?
The message sent out by Bratz and other porny paraphernalia is that little girls must look like this or be worthless. The message it sends out to adolescent boys and perverted men is that these aren't children but knowing child-women, somehow up for it and dressed for it.
We live in an age that likes to appear cynical.

In the opulent Upper East Side mansion that houses the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, a 6-by-4-foot rabbit coated entirely in chalkboard paint looks brilliantly out of place in the stodgy, wood-paneled hall. Visitors are happy to scribble their musings on its curvaceous slate-black surface, but are left to wonder: Is it a toy? Is it sculpture? Is it design?
Well … yes. It's a Munny, the extra-large version of a customizable plastic figurine designed and sold by New York-based Kidrobot. The multimillion-dollar company has become a pop-culture icon, mostly for fanning an ultra-popular trend that has further united the worlds of graffiti, graphic design, and fine art.
Not that it's stopped making toys. Owner Paul Budnitz, 39, who practically ushered the Chinese vinyl-toy phenomenon into the Western world (after it had been supercharged in Japan), last year oversaw 53 new releases. But ideas for new Kidrobot products are coming at Budnitz fast--from friends, musicians, fashion designers, graffiti artists, animators, even suggestions from Kidrobot's message boards--in what amounts to an open-source design collective. And Budnitz, who opened the first Kidrobot store in San Francisco in 2002, considers every one. 'When there's no sense of possessiveness or ownership in the artistic process, great things happen,' he says. 'You need someone with a very clear vision holding everything together, and frankly that's what I'm exceptionally good at.'
One of Budnitz's recent visionary moves was to reinvent Kidrobot's extremely popular retail spaces in New York and Los Angeles (the San Francisco store will be redesigned soon), something a traditional company would see as a huge risk. 'It's definitely unorthodox to move and redesign stores that are doing so well that customers are usually waiting in line when we open our doors each morning,' he says. He transformed the spaces from toy galleries to lifestyle stores that feature a new limited-edition line of apparel. Today, not only are the stores still mobbed, they can't keep the technicolor hoodies in stock.
This ravenous audience is exactly why everyone wants to be friends with Kidrobot. Budnitz has overseen the design of a wildly successful tie-in with a shoe by Nike (NYSE:NKE) and exclusive apparel for Barneys. Then Volkswagen came knocking, with a plan to bring to life another bunny-inspired character, the Dunny, in a signature version of its new Rabbit. Budnitz was able to completely customize the vehicle, from interior textiles to the paint job; it should be available in 2008. Hip hotel chainlet the Standard held a Kidrobot toy release party in L.A. this past January. And there's the Kidrobot hot spot: Nightlife impresario Peter Gatien commissioned a Kidrobot lounge for his Toronto club, Circa, which opens this spring. The bar's custom seating will also be sold at Kidrobot stores, the first pieces of an upcoming furniture line.
With all the attention, Budnitz was free to be extra choosy about bringing in his sole outside investor: In February of 2006, he sold a majority stake in the company to digital-animation studio Wildbrain. The deal with Wildbrain not only adds creative capital--its animators and designers will bring the Kidrobot brand to film and video--but also brings to the table a creative industry giant, Wildbrain president and CEO Charles Rivkin. In Millennial Monsters, Allison examines the ways in which video games, anime, manga and character goods have made Japan a country that is both appealingly foreign and at the same time familiar to global youth. Focusing largely on Japan as the generator and the United States as the marketplace for fantasy goods, Allison mounts a thorough analysis of the production, marketing and creative minds behind TV programmes such as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and characters and games like Hello Kitty and Pokemon while exploring how the goods reflect the relationships between fantasy, capitalism and global cultural power.

Allison begins her story at the end of World War II, explaining how toy makers with few resources began making toys out of the tin cans and other metal refuse discarded by Occupation forces. Ironically, the clever designs were so popular that they were eventually exported back to the United States – in effect reselling the Americans their own trash.  
“As such,” Allison writes, “(the toys) constituted the first export and primary impetus for Japan’s postwar economy.”  
Along the way, Allison charts the rise of such fantasy icons and products such as Godzilla, Atom Boy and Speed Racer, culminating in two very long chapters on the Pokemon phenomenon that became a global kids’ craze in the latter half of the 1990s. With its catchphrase “Gotta catch ’em all”, referring to the capturing and trading of virtual pocket monsters, or Pokemon, the simple Game Boy game was not only a fantasy product that could be expanded into an endless variety of media – cards, video games, character goods, movies – it also trained children to become hyperconsumers.  
The author of such intriguing titles as Nightwork: Sexuality, Pleasure, and Corporate Masculinity in a Tokyo Hostess Club, Allison has wide-ranging interests in modern Japanese culture, and she offers fascinating insight into how the atomism of modern Japanese life – solitary commutes, endless work hours and cram school studying – has led many Japanese to replace personal contact with the virtual intimacies of such goods and technologies as cell phones and Game Boys.  
Although Allison is wary of the hyperconsumerism that these fantasy goods represent in Japan and abroad, she also acknowledges their power to delight and provide a form of companionship for the children who play with them.

2006 Plastic and Plush Toy Awards: Best Packaging

Just like last year...I'll let you know that I'm not a fan of clamshell packaging.  Who is?  You need hedge trimmers to get them opened.  Also, twist ties are simply a barrier between you and your toy.  With that said...what do we like?  Great artwork, informative reading and originality.

Sideshow's new line of 12' Star Wars figures are not only impressive in and of themselves...but the new packaging rocks!  The box folds out to reveal 2 panels of background reading, a section for accessories and one containing the figure.  Plus, the box is held together with a magnet...very cool!

Jim Woodring's vinyl figure was held up in some very impressive packaging.  Looking more like a retro style board game, the box has a great scene of Mr. Bumper on his way down a street.  Maybe that's why STRANGEco has the figure displayed on the box...because they're equally impressive.

Eric Nocella's sculpting work on Buzz Carney was lauded by collectors as being one of the year's best.  He took one of Jared Deal and Garnet Syberg-Olsen's characters and sculpted an amazing likeness.

Two layers of intricate sculpting work was done on Jim Woodring's Mr. Bumper.  Not only is there a ton going on with the figure's cowl, but when you remove that...the base figure is also amazing.

The market for mini figures wasn't as strong as in past years.  More companies were going big rather than going small.  But we did find several impressive lines that had collectors chatting up the boards.

Play Imaginative's Trexi line took to the pitch with 25 designs from some of the top designers.  They were told Coca-Cola and Soccer and went to town with reckless abandon.

UNKL Brand released several series of their 2' UniPo figures.  The second series was our favorite of the lot with it's military based theme.

Jamungo's introduction into the designer toy foray made collectors crazy for the blind boxed series.  Due to their popularity, Ferg and VanBeater's B.U.D.s were 'blown up' to 9' tall for customizers to take advantage of.

Plastica has released a very limited-edition exclusive mono-gray version of Kazukiko Ito's  new Itokin Park Kawadoji figure.  There are only 10 of these hand-made resin figures available @ 5500 yen (~$ 46.70) each.  Kawadoji is one of the nicest Itokin Park figures released to date in our opinion -- so don't expect this tiny monocolorway edition to last very long ;-)
