MGA July 2009 Wins Ruling Against Insurers

MGA Entertainment said Wednesday that a judge ruled that two insurance companies that earlier refused to pay for its defense in its Bratz legal battle with Mattel Inc. are legally bound to do so.
A federal jury decided last year that a former Mattel doll designer created the Bratz name and characters for MGA while still working for Mattel. The Van Nuys toymaker is on the hook for more than $160 million, including a $100 million damage award and more than $60 million in court costs.
The U.S. district judge in the case, Stephen G. Larson, last month granted a summary judgment against Crum & Forster and Evanston Insurance Co., saying they had to pay despite certain policy exclusions, MGA said.
“This is a significant development which will open the way for recovery of all past and future damages suffered by MGA,” said attorney Michael J. Bidart, who represents MGA, in a statement.
A future trial will determine how much the insurance companies owe the company. MGA said. It is possible that even the damage award, or a portion of it, could be covered by insurance.
The company last month reached a separate settlement with three other insurers – Hartford Insurance Co. of the Midwest, Hartford Fire Insurance Co. and the Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. – over the damages and legal bills.
MGA filed a federal lawsuit in 2008 against the all the insurers, saying they had breached their agreement to pay for MGA’s defense.

Hasbro July 2009 insight: Photography and Dioramas by Gianni Lopergol

HASBRO is sponsoring a project to help raise money for ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease by selling a book of toy diorama photography by an artist who uses their toys in diorama's for advertising. The book is called insight: Photography and Dioramas by Gianni Lopergol.

The toys listed as featured in the photographic compilation are said to be Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Marvel Super Heroes.

While technically not a Transformers item for sale, it does appeal to the crowd on this site because many of us collect other toys, or are fans of photography of them, or diorama creation. And of course, not only is it an interesting book, but it also serves to help a great cause.

You can see a link to the item on HASBRO's website, and a pre-order for the book at hasbrotoyshop.

insight: is a 128-page, full-color photography book from former Hasbro photographer, Gianni Lopergolo. A trailblazing artist, Gianni reinvented the way product photography was done at Hasbro, using unconventional lighting techniques and building scene-stealing dioramas from everyday objects. Now in the fight of his life, Gianni has been battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, for three years. No longer able to work, and with the help of his friends, Gianni recently realized his lifelong dream of publishing a book of his photography. Featuring the much-loved G.I. JOE, Marvel and Star Wars product lines, insight: displays over 90 of Gianni’s favorite images and even includes some previously unreleased photos. Hasbro is proud to present this book in support of the National ALS Association and a private fund to be established for Gianni’s three young sons.

Toys: The movie industry's new playthings

When Michael Bay, cinema’s reigning champion of vehicular carnage, thinks your idea for an explosive, special-effects-laden blockbuster is lame, you’ve got problems.
A few years ago, Bay, the director of “Armageddon,” “The Rock” and “Bad Boys,” was in his editing room when Steven Spielberg called to offer him a new project: an action movie about giant robots that metamorphose into cars, trucks and planes.
As Bay recalled in a recent interview, “I’m like, ‘OK, great, great, great.’ And I hung up the phone. And I’m like, ‘That sounds like a dumb idea.’”
ining>
What helped persuade Bay to take the first “Transformers” movie — which in 2007 took in more than $700 million worldwide at the box office, and whose sequel, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” opened Wednesday — was a visit to the Pawtucket, R.I., headquarters of Hasbro, which creates the Transformers toys.
There Bay, 44, was given a thorough education on the narrative embedded in the 25-year-old toy line: a back story about warring factions of valiant Autobots and nefarious Decepticons who bring their battle to Earth from their home planet, Cybertron.
Bay was sold.
“I don’t consider this a toy,” he said. “It’s not. To me it’s the furthest thing from it. It was about the mythology and that there was a story here.”
For Hasbro, this summer will see not one but two of its most lucrative properties spun into big-budget movies. The “Transformers” sequel will be followed on Aug. 7 by a live-action adaptation of its G.I. Joe toys, called “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.”  The pair of films is the payoff of a strategy that the toy company has been cultivating for nearly a decade: infusing movie-friendly story lines into its popular playthings and teaching Hollywood that these stories can be translated onto cinema screens. It’s an approach that many other toymakers also are taking, unwilling to cede theater marquees to the creations of comic book publishers such as Marvel and DC.  As fans and collectors know, the Hasbro toys have histories that stretch back for decades.
The original G.I. Joe, a 12-inch-tall soldier known as “America’s moveable fighting man,” was introduced by Hasbro in 1964. After the Vietnam War, Joe’s connection to the U.S. military was played down, and in 1982 the soldier was recommissioned as a pocket-size special missions force of numerous agents. The Joe team was given a nemesis, Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization (back when such things seemed suitable for youthful reveries).
Two years later, Hasbro imported a series of action figures created by the Japanese toy company Takara, consisting of robots that disguise themselves as vehicles and other technology, calling them Transformers.
The G.I. Joe and Transformers toys, and their comic book and cartoon spinoffs, dominated the marketplace in the 1980s. But in the 1990s, their popularity faded as children turned their attention to newer phenomena such as Pokemon and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
“There’s certainly a fad element to what kids are into,” said Gareb Shamus, the publisher of the collectibles magazine ToyFare. Some properties, he said, “just need to take a breather.

'Transformers' and 'GI Joe' movie tie-ins pay off in sales for Hasbro - New York Daily News
ink> Transformers aren't just titans at the box office, they're flying off store shelves, too. Toy giant Hasbro said Monday strong sales of the morphing robots as well as G.I. Joe helped its quarterly profits crush Wall Street expectations. Summer movie tie-in toys have been one bright spot for toymakers during the consumer-spending slowdown. Hasbro has been buoyed in recent years by toys tied to movies, including this summer's hit 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' and the upcoming 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.' 'We couldn't be more pleased with the performance both at the box office and at retail,' said CEO Brian Goldner. 'Retailers around the world recognize that certain brands like Transformers bring to life the entire store for consumers, which translates into premium placement and representation across multiple departments for those brands.' Wells Fargo Securities analyst Tim Conder said in a report Monday that he expects the benefit to Hasbro from movie-related toys to continue into 2010, when the company will also have toys tied to the 'Iron Man 2' and 'Toy Story 3' movies. Goldner also said Hasbro sales and profits are likely to climb for the full year. Still, weak international sales due to the stronger dollar, as well as costs related to a joint venture, crimped results in the latest quarter. Another weak spot was games and puzzles. Hasbro owns a multitude of game titles including Scrabble and Monopoly - and sales in that division fell 17%. But the company said that was due to the timing of shipments for promotional programs rolling out over the next few months. Net income grew 28% to $39.3 million, or 26 cents per share, from $37.5 million. Revenues inched up 1% to $792.2 million, falling slightly shore of expectations

Hasbro July 2009 New cable network being launched by Discovery Communications and toy giant Hasbro Inc.

Veteran kids programming executive Margaret Loesch has been tapped to run the new cable network being launched by Discovery Communications and toy giant Hasbro Inc.
LOESCHThe unnamed channel, which is set to launch late next year, has already drawn a fair amount of criticism from media watchdogs because of Hasbro's involvement. The well-regarded Loesch, who ran Fox Broadcasting's kids programming unit during its 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers'and 'X-Men' heyday, says the channel won't be a shill for Hasbro products.
'They understand this can't be a channel devoted to toys. . . . That would not succeed,' Loesch said, adding that if Hasbro didn't embrace that, 'I would not have taken this job.'
The channel, which is taking the slot currently occupied by Discovery Kids, should launch in about 60 million homes. It will face intense competition from already-entrenched networks including Viacom's Nickelodeon, Disney's Disney Channel and its new Disney XD and Time Warner's Cartoon Network.
Loesch, who also ran the Hallmark Channel for Crown Media and most recently has been producing movies, says that while the cable competition is intense, she is just as concerned about all the other media platforms she'll be facing off against besides traditional TV.
'When we built Fox Kids, they were primarily watching television; now we have to make sure we provide an experience on all these different platforms,' she said.

Anime Leader and Major Amusement Game Operator Introduce Game Featuring Dragon Ball Z Figures

Flower Mound, Texas (July 15, 2009) – FUNimation Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corporation, Toei Animation, Ltd., and Namco Cybertainment Inc., one of the largest amusement game operators in the U.S. and Caribbean, are bringing the Z-fighters to more than 780 amusement centers around the country.

Already available, these centers house a new crane game containing figures of Goku, his friends and foes.  The Dragon Ball Z figure crane game will offer an entirely new experience for those who are familiar with the old crane concept. Instead of directing a crane claw to a random and, hopefully, substantial grip on a desired prize, crane players are able to utilize their skills to line up the claw fingers with one or more of the eight holes in the custom figure packaging for a precise hook on their favorite Dragon Ball Z figures. These collector edition figure prizes are designed and manufactured by Banpresto Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan and cannot be found in retail stores.

Created by Akira Toriyama and produced by Toei Animation, the anime series “Dragon Ball Z” has taken millions of fans around the globe in search of adventure and the chance to put Goku’s skills to the test. A valiant warrior, he has saved the Earth as he faced powerful villains. Now, Dragon Ball Z fans can then test their own agility and hand-eye coordination in playing the crane game. Fans can visit this online store locator to find the nearest game at an amusement center near them.

Hasbro July 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Action Figures are Invading Toy Shelves

If you're like me, you've been practically doing cartwheels over the upcoming release of G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Not only am I little-girl-with-a-pony excited about the release of the movie, but what I'm really drooling over is the release of the action figures! I've been waiting for a live-action G.I. Joe movie since I was 10 and the new action figures are just another way to celebrate my childhood hopes being brought to life.
This past week, official G.I. Joe movie figures have started hitting the internet toy-sellers, giving many of us our first looks at some of the new figures, vehicles and playsets. Considering the bulk of the collection, it looks like Hasbro is not pulling any punches and giving the fans what they crave.
Reports are starting to spread among the action figure blogs about people finally beginning to see some of the new figures in retail stores as well, although I predict that the wave of toys will hit full force in about a week or so. Mattel July 2009 Launches Avatar figures - Industry's First Toy Line Featuring Augmented Reality Technology

Mattel, Inc. will preview at San Diego Comic-Con 2009 a new line of action figures based on Twentieth Century Fox’s upcoming epic action-adventure film, “Avatar,” that will incorporate augmented reality technology, marking the first time this technology will ever appear in a retail toy product. The toy line, developed in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox Licensing) will feature heroes, creatures and vehicles straight from James Cameron’s much-anticipated film, which is set for release in December 2009.
Each action figure, vehicle and creature in the product line will come with a 3-D web tag, called an i-TAG, which consumers can “scan” using a home computer’s webcam. Scanning the i-TAG will reveal special content onscreen unique to the corresponding product. Exact content varies for each item, but could include biographical information, additional images and animated models of the figures. When the i-TAG for deluxe figures, vehicles or creatures are placed under a webcam, animated 3-D models will “come alive” through engaging, evading or defending moves. Place two i-TAGs from the “Battle Pack” together and the 3-D images will interact with each other.

“The development of our ‘Avatar’ toy line with the integration of the augmented reality technology marks an entirely new level of innovation in toys,” said Doug Wadleigh, Vice President for Boys Action Play Marketing, Mattel, Inc. “Boys will be able to play with the ‘Avatar’ figures and vehicles in ways that previously could only be imagined.”
Lora Cohn, Vice President, Fox Licensing, added, “This is going to be a ground-breaking moment for both film and toy with the introduction of one of the most innovative 3-D experiences ever conceived. Mattel has created the perfect complement to a film that is going to wow audiences the world over with its bold new vision.”
The i-TAG technology was developed by Total Immersion, the global leader in augmented reality. Total Immersion’s patented augmented reality technology integrates real time interactive 3-D graphics into live video. Once the object is recognized by the webcam, the product comes to life on screen.
“Augmented reality is a software solution that has significantly gained momentum and popularity with advertisers, retailers and marketers over the past several years because of its unique ability to engage consumers in their experience with a brand,” said Bruno Uzzan, CEO and co-founder, Total Immersion. “The launch of Mattel’s ‘Avatar’ toy line is truly groundbreaking, as this marks the first time augmented reality has been featured in a mainstream consumer product line.”
The Mattel line of “Avatar” action figures, creatures and vehicles will be available at retail stores nationwide in October 2009.
About “Avatar”
The director of Titanic takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love -- as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization in this epic action adventure fantasy. Conceived 14 years ago and over four years in the making, “Avatar” breaks new ground in delivering a fully immersive, emotional story and reinvents the movie going experience.
The “Avatar” cast includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver. Academy Award-winning visual effects house, WETA Digital, renowned for its work in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy and “King Kong,” will incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photor

Japan July 2009 Recession hits Robot Makers (both industrial and toy robots)

Tighter finances are injecting a dose of reality into some of Japan’s more fantastic projects — like pet robots and cyborg receptionists — that could cramp innovation long after the economy recovers. “We’ve taken a huge hammering,” said Koji Toshima, president of Yaskawa, Japan’s largest maker of industrial robots.  Profit at the company plunged by two-thirds, to 6.9 billion yen, about $72 million, in the year ended March 20, and it predicts a loss this year.
Across the industry, shipments of industrial robots fell 33 percent in the last quarter of 2008, and 59 percent in the first quarter of 2009, according to the Japan Robot Association.  Tetsuaki Ueda, an analyst at the research firm Fuji Keizai, expects the market to shrink by as much as 40 percent this year. Investment in robots, he said, “has been the first to go as companies protect their human workers.” While robots can be cheaper than flesh-and-blood workers over the long term, the upfront investment costs are much higher.
In 2005, more than 370,000 robots worked at factories across Japan, about 40 percent of the global total, representing 32 robots for every 1,000 manufacturing employees, according to a report by Macquarie Bank. A 2007 government plan for technology policy called for one million industrial robots to be installed by 2025. That will almost certainly not happen.
“The recession has set the robot industry back years,” Mr. Ueda said.
That goes for industrial robots and the more cuddly toy robots. In fact, several of the lovable sort have already become casualties of the recession.
The robot maker Systec Akazawa filed for bankruptcy in January, less than a year after it introduced its miniature PLEN walking robot at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Roborior by Tmsuk — a watermelon-shape house sitter on wheels that rolls around a home and uses infrared sensors to detect suspicious movement and a video camera to transmit images to absent residents — has struggled to find new users. A rental program was scrapped in April because of lack of interest.
Though the company won’t release sale figures, it has sold less than a third of the goal, 3,000 units, it set when Roborior hit the market in 2005, analysts say. There are no plans to manufacture more.
That is a shame, Mariko Ishikawa, a Tmsuk spokesman, says, because busy Japanese in the city could use the Roborior to keep an eye on aging parents in the countryside.
“Roborior is just the kind of robot Japanese society needs in the future,” Ms. Ishikawa said.
Japan’s aging population had given the development of home robots an added imperative. With nearly 25 percent of citizens 65 or older, the country was banking on robots to replenish the work force and to help nurse the elderly.
But sales of a Secom product, My Spoon, a robot with a swiveling, spoon-fitted arm that helps older or disabled people eat, have similarly stalled as caregivers balk at its $4,000 price.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries failed to sell even one of its toddler-size home-helper robots, the Wakamaru, introduced in 2003.
Of course, less practical, novelty robots have fallen on even harder times in the downturn. And that goes for robot makers outside Japan, too.
Ugobe, based in Idaho, is the maker of the cute green Pleo dinosaur robot with a wiggly tail; it filed for bankruptcy protection in April.
Despite selling 100,000 Pleos and earning more than $20 million, the company racked up m

Bossa Nova Robotics Inc.July 2009 Prime-8 & Penbo robots
Prime-8 runs on his arms, stops to sniff whatever's in his way and even can shoot a plastic rocket at an annoying little sister. Penbo purrs when she's petted, and plays games with the chirping baby penguin that hatches from her tummy.
Prime-8

Robots are all the rage this summer as toys from the latest 'Transformers' and 'Terminator' movies fill stores, and Carnegie Mellon University spinoff Bossa Nova Robotics Inc. plans to start selling its own two playthings with personalities in coming weeks on cable shopping channel QVC and online retailer Amazon.comsrc=http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=tritotmed-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B001EYUKV0.
The yellow, gorilla-faced Prime-8 and chubby pink penguin Penbo showed off their tricks, speed and agility Thursday at an event at the Oakland campus.Penbo

They're the first toys developed with technology from CMU's Robotics Institute to debut commercially, but others are in the design and prototype stages.
For consumers, 'The most successful application for robots so far is in the toy business,' said John Feghali, one of Bossa Nova's three founders.
Inspired by Furby and other interactive toys, Prime-8 and Penbo use mechanics adapted from a cockroach-like robot named RHex created several years ago at CMU.
Both toys walk or run on two rotating limbs, Prime-8 on his arms and Penbo on her legs.
They don't trip on carpet as many toy robots do, their creators say. And using sensors, they respond to their owners' moves, play games and dance and fall asleep if they're ignored. Blow a kiss to Penbo, and she'll kiss back.
Prime-8, geared for boys ages 8 to 12, goes on sale for $99.99 on QVC on July 25. Penbo, for girls 4 to 6 and costing $69.99, will follow with her first TV appearance in mid-August.
Amazon.com will feature both products starting Aug. 1, and they'll be in stores for the holidays.
Feghali along with Bossa Nova cofounders David Palmer and Sarjoun Skaff tested their play robots with children at Carnegie Science Center on the North Shore. The toys will continue to be used there as part of the Robot Workshop at the science center's new Roboworld, billed as the world's biggest permanent robotics exhibition.
Feghali, Palmer and Skaff met through CMU, shared a liking for bossa nova music and talked about starting a robotics business.
They decided to make entertaining and educational toys that would be priced competitively after watching a group of toddlers giggle as RHex chased them around a campus lawn.
The partners founded their company four years ago, secured money from several sources including the Pittsburgh Technology Council's annual EnterPrize contest, and brought in former Mattel, Hasbro and MGA Entertainment executive Martin Hitch as CEO.
While toy robots undoubtedly are popular with kids, gauging sales isn't easy.
Electronics claimed $865 million of the toy industry's total $21.6 billion in sales last year, but interactive technology is showing up in lots of classic playthings ranging from dolls to board games. The Japan Robotics Association forecasts that the market for personal and lifestyle robots will grow to $15 billion by 2015.
For kids, 'Robotic toys are emulating what

2009 is quickly becoming a great year for McFarlane Toys football fans. Our tremendously popular 12-inch scale figures are immense in detail and will be the premier item of any collection.

Take one look at our photography of these two action figure collectibles and you will agree.

BEN ROETHLISBERGER
This superstar quarterback and two-time NFL champion makes his 12-inch Sport Picks debut featured in his Pittsburgh Steelers' black home jersey.

In just five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger has won two NFL Championships and has become the second most prolific quarterback in franchise history, behind Pro Football Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw.

TONY ROMO
The star leader of 'America's Team' is featured in his Dallas Cowboys white home jersey and is also making his 12-inch Sports Picks debut.

In one of the more intriguing success stories in recent NFL history, Tony Romo ascended from the ranks of an un-drafted free agent -- and three-year back-up quarterback -- to a record setting, two-time Pro Bowl selection for the Dallas Cowboys.

These two fan-favorite football heroes are coming to stores this November.
