Licensing International Expo June 2008 Warner & Disney & more...
NEW YORK—The 28th annual Licensing International Expo—the event's last expo in New York before next year's move to Las Vegas—came to a subdued close today, winding down three days of buzz, branding and brainstorming sessions for the hottest properties of the future. More than 25,000 attendees were on hand this week, hashing out their property plans from all sides of the business. Here are some of their latest deals and upcoming initiatives.

Warner Bros. will soon begin promoting its tie-in products (toys from master partner Mattel as well as costumes from Rubies and high-end collectibles from NECA) for the newest Batman film, The Dark Knight, which debuts on the big screen next month. Another big focus going forward for the company will be on The Brave and the Bold, a new Batman series set to air on Cartoon Network in November, Kelly Gilmore, senior vice president of global toys and themed entertainment, tells Playthings. The stylized animated series, appropriate for preschoolers, will pair Batman with a different superhero each week. An entire toy line for the series will debut from Mattel in spring 2009.

Other upcoming properties and deals being discussed at the show include Where the Wild Things Are (October 2009)—for which McFarlane Toys and Sababa will produce both movie and literary-based products; Alexander Doll, Crocodile Creek and Mudpuppy signed on for literary products; and Funko and Fisher-Price for movie products—as well as the upcoming seventh Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The studio is now planning to break the film into two parts, one debuting in 2010 and the other in 2011, Gilmore says. The Hobbit will follow in 2011.

Long-term, live-action Robotech, Johnny Quest, World of Warcraft, He-Man and Justice League films are also on the agenda for licensing, as well as the CGI Thundercats and a third Batman film from Chris Nolan, Gilmore says.

• Mattel unveiled a number of new directo-to-DVD home entertainment properties that will debut for its Barbie brand, including Barbie and the Diamond Castle plus A Christmas Carol for the holiday season and Thumbelina for Spring 2009, which will have an environmental element. Meanwhile, the U.B. Funkeys, from the company’s Radica division, are being licensed into plush as well as electronic tie-ins such as computer speakers and flash drives from Emerson in an exclusive program with Target this fall; the Funkeys push is the earliest ever outbound licensing campaign for a Mattel, according to a company representative. Mattel also confirmed that new apparel is in the works for all its key brands, including Barbie, Hot Wheels and the U.B. Funkeys. Another focus for the company at this year’s show was the promotion of its Barbie BCause brand, a patchwork collection of girls’ accessories (toes, pillows, books) made from scrap fabrics and other recycled materials left over from Barbie doll clothing production. The line is exclusive to Toys “R” Us this fall.

Disney Consumer Products talked up its plans for more Princess productions, which will for the first time venture beyond Disney-owned characters and into those from classic fairytales. Up first is this year’s The Princess and the Frog, which features the first African-American princess in the Disney family, followed by Rapunzel in 2010. Also on the horizon for the company is a fourth High School Musical movie and Toy Story 3.

International Tokyo Toy Show June 2008
Where else could the Pocket Monsters, Tomica Hero Rescue Force, Miffy and Yattermen all share the same stage?
News photo
The most toys: Visitors mill about at Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake during last year's International Tokyo Toy Show. Japan's largest annual toy fair, to be held this weekend, is free to the general public and will include a Kid's Park. COURTESY OF ITTS
In the imaginations of young children, I guess. But to witness this meeting of adolescents' heroes in the real world, you will have to be at Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake this weekend, where the International Tokyo Toy Show will be held. At Japan's largest annual toy fair, around 36,000 toys will be displayed in stalls presented by 134 manufacturers from Japan and worldwide. More than 120,000 people are expected to attend. ITTS staff report that toy tendencies for 2008 include 'cooking themes' as well as a whole range of second- and third-generation upgrades of existing favorites. Another highlight will be more 'adult' toys featured than ever before. Not that this suggests anything untoward; adult toys in Japan these days generally mean fitness and weight-reduction gadgets. The manufacturers with the largest stalls will be domestic companies Bandai, Konami Digital Entertainment, Toho, Sega Toys and Tomy. Mattel, Lego and other well-known foreign brands will also be represented at the fair. The event runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free. Performances featuring popular children's TV characters will be held on a large central stage at regular intervals each day. For more details see www.toys.or.jp/toyshow/english/ The Tokyo Big Sight convention center is easily accessible from Kokusai-tenjijo-Seimon Station on the Yurikamome Line or Kokusai-tenjijo Station on the Rinkai Line

RC2 June 2008 To buy Children's Publishing Division of privately held Publications International Ltd for $163 million in cash
U.S. toy company RC2 Corp. said on Monday it plans to buy the Children's Publishing Division of privately held Publications International Ltd for $163 million in cash, to further expand into the market for preschool products. Illinois-based Children's Publishing Division, with products including electronic books and story books, will be a 'strong strategic fit' for RC2 's Learning Curve brand of toys, said Curt Stoelting, chief executive of RC2. '(Children's Publishing Division) will further improve RC2's competitive position in the early learning market, create a platform for new lines of early learning products and create additional opportunities for international expansion,' Stoelting said in a statement. The payment excludes transaction fees and expenses, RC2 said. Its transaction and future working capital needs are expected to be financed by a new $325 million credit facility led by Bank of Montreal, RC2 added. RC2 expects annual integration cost savings from $8 million to $10 million within two years of completing the purchase of the division. The company expects the deal to boost 2008 earnings by 15 to 20 cents per share and 2009 earnings by 30 to 40 cents a share. But RC2 said the deal could hurt earnings in individual quarters, given the timing of the deal and cost savings and the seasonal nature of toy sales.

International Toy Fair Feb 2008 in Nurnberg, Germany - Increased Indian presence!
New Delhi, Oct 23: India sure is in a joyful mood with a steady increase in participation every year at the International Toy Fair, the biggest of its kind on earth, in Germany. From 21 Indian companies in 2005, the participation increased to 32 this year and 24 have already registered for next year. Ernst Kick, CEO of Spielwarenmesse eG, which has been organising the fair since 1950, was in the capital Tuesday to promote the 2008 edition of the fair and said that he was happy with the positive response from Indian companies.

'There has been a steady increase in the Indian participation. In 2005, 21 companies participated, which increased to 26 in 2006 and to 32 in 2007. For 2008, 24 Indian companies have already confirmed their presence,' said Kick told IANS.

'Similarly, 79 Indian trade visitors in 2005 increased to 92 in 2006 and 102 in 2007. Although I am happy with the response, I want more participation. That's why I am here,' he added.

With 2,750 exhibitors participating from 60 countries and 80,000 trade visitors from 120 countries, the toy fair is the centre of attraction in the toy world.

India has been participating in the fair since 1980.

Besides classic toys, the fair has a reputation of exhibiting a phenomenal number of new products every year.

'This year there were 70,000 new products being exhibited. There are so many toys to choose from that by calculation you get just 0.8 seconds for each toy!' Kick pointed out.

The highlights for the 2008 International Toy Fair are those toys that help a child to learn while playing. For instance, the classic building blocks or scrabble help children learn while having fun.

'In 2007, our highlight was toys for the 40 plus. It generated a lot of interest and we hope that this year we can attract as much interest,' said Christian Ulrich, director, marketing, Spielwarenmesse eG.

S.K. Kinra of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) said that Indian participation, in comparison to the rest of the nations, is negligible.

'Indian participation is negligible in comparison to, say China, but nevertheless, it is increasing over the years and that is a good sign,' said Kinra.

The International Toy Fair will be held Feb 7-12, 2008 in Nurnberg, Germany.

Cheap lead paint common on Chinese goods - International Herald Tribune

Mattel has blamed its Chinese contract manufacturers for failing to use the unleaded paint required in their contracts. And last week a toymakers' industry group called for the U.S. government to require testing of all toys entering the country to restore consumer confidence heading into the all-important Christmas shopping season.
But the question remains: Why is lead paint - or lead for that matter - turning up in so many recalls involving goods made in China?
The simplest answer, experts and toy companies here say, is price. Paint with higher levels of lead often costs a third as much as paint with low levels of lead. So Chinese factory owners, trying to eke out a profit in an intensely competitive but poorly regulated market, sometimes cut corners and use the cheaper paint.
On the books, China's paint standards are stricter than those in the United States, requiring that paint intended for household or consumer-product use contain no more than 90 parts of lead per million. By comparison, U.S. regulations allow 600 parts per million.
Those regulations are supposed to safeguard health, particularly in children, as ingesting lead has been linked to everything from the retardation of physical and mental development to behavioral problems.
But enforcement of the regulations in China is lax.
'The standard doesn't matter,' says Scott Clark, a professor of environmental health at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio.
Clark and a team of investigators randomly sampled paint supplies in Shanghai and other parts of China in recent years, and in about 37 percent of the cases, they said, the paint met neither American nor Chinese standards. Even goods at high-end shopping malls in Shanghai contained unacceptable levels of lead.
But Clark also said China was not alone in producing tainted goods.
'We also looked at India, Malaysia and Singapore, and only Singapore met the requirements,' he said.
China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine - which has some oversight over paint regulation - did not respond to questions about the prevalence of lead paint and the inspection regime.
But some Chinese toymakers were more forthcoming. Some admitted that they use paint with high levels of lead; others said they knew of other companies that do - sometimes because lead paint is cheaper, sometimes because it is believed to work better on surfaces and to produce richer color.
A sales manager at Big Tree Toys, a company in Shantou, in southern China, said leaded paint was about 30 percent cheaper than nonleaded paint. She also noted that some countries, in the Middle East for instance, do not restrict lead content. But Zhang, the sales manager, who did not want her first name reported, insisted that if her company uses leaded paint it discloses that fact.
'It depends on the client's requirement,' she said. 'If the prices they offer make it impossible to use lead-free paint, we'll tell them that we might have to use leaded paint. If they agree, we'll use leaded paint. It totally depends on what the clients want.'
Chen Tao, the sales manager at Chenghai Guangxin Plastic Toys Factory, also in Shantou, said his factory did not use lead paint. But he added that Chinese regulators are essentially absent.

Saudi Arabia Aug 2007 Recalls Chinese-made toys over fears of lead paint - International Herald Tribune

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia ordered the recall of 2,300 toys made in China feared to contain high levels of toxic lead paint, the country's official news agency reported Saturday.
The Saudi minister of commerce collected 46 samples of toys in the Riyadh markets to examine whether they contained dangerous chemicals, the agency reported. The findings were not yet revealed.
On Wednesday, the same ministry ordered a recall of seven different brands of toothpaste made in China after lab tests discovered high levels of toxic diethylene glycol.
Mattel Inc., which recalled almost 19 million Chinese-made items including dolls, cars and action figures earlier this month, warned its agents in Saudi Arabia that lead has been found in the toys, the press agency added.
Toys are the latest in a long list of Chinese exports that have come under intense scrutiny around the world in recent months because of safety concerns. Toxic chemicals have been found in products ranging from toothpaste to seafood and pet food ingredients.
This week alone, the United States has recalled tens of thousands of Chinese-made SpongeBob SquarePants products because of lead hazards, while New Zealand launched an urgent investigation after children's clothes imported from China were found to contain dangerous levels of formaldehyde.

Guan Yu is a central character in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a historical drama that has been re-imagined several times as novels, TV shows and even comic books.  I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about the character, but UniToyzone describes him as:

“Guan Yu was the sworn brother of Liu Bei and Zhang Fei. Five years before the Yellow Turban Rebellion, he slew a wealthy bully and was a fugitive up until he met Liu Bei. Sometime after the Yellow Turbans, Guan Yu and Liu Bei's wives were captured by Cao Cao, and Guan Yu surrendered to Cao Cao, even fighting with him against Yuan Shao. After repaying Cao Cao for sparing his life, Guan Yu traveled a very long distance with Liu Bei's wives to bring them home safely. Later, Guan Yu spared Cao Cao's life at Chi Bi, but was killed with his son Guan Ping when captured at Maicheng.”

Apparently Guan Yu was a real person once; You can read more about him in this Wikipedia entry.
Guan Yu is manufactured by Sea-International (known for their ZMDC figures), Distributed by Merit Intl., and is in stock at UniToyzone. There are only 1,000 pieces made of this figure in the world.

Mic-O-Mic 2005 Construction Toys are to be Exhibited at the American International Toy Fair February 20-2
February 7, 2005 -- Mic-O-Mic construction toys, winners of Design Awards in Europe, are now a major recipient of several toy awards from toy gurus in the United States since their introduction to North America in mid-2004. Their Distributor, Mic-O-Mic Americas Inc., will be showing these colorful, and extremely durable, German designed and manufactured construction toys at the AITF. They will be at BOOTH 2925 on the third floor of the Jacob J. Javits Conference Center.
The toys that have won awards are:

Model # 2.01 Small car with 2 figurines: (Dr. Toy - Best Vacation Products, 2004)

Model # 2.06 Helicopter: (Design Center,  Stuttgart – Design Award 1997 and
Four Star rating from The Boston Herald in their Holiday Gift Guide, 2004)
There are 22 different models in the range offered at present. There may be other models introduced in the coming years and companies are invited to contact Mic-O-Mic Americas if they wish to have a special toy designed for promotional or other purposes or if they wish to utilize existing toys for similar purposes. The colors will always be the same, the quality will always be the same, the assembly method will always be the same - these are the hallmarks of Mic-O-Mic toys – quality above all else!
The assembly method is patented and employs plugs and flexible clips. These are so well engineered that the plugs are almost impossible to remove without the use of a patented plug extractor, one of which is supplied with every toy. Also, there are no written assembly instructions, just a few pictures to show how the toys should look at various stages of construction. This helps develop cognitive and fine motor skills. The larger, more complex toys may require help or advice from adults or friends, thereby developing interpersonal skills.
The toys are for 6 year olds and up - all the way to adults, are very colorful, well balanced and with no sharp edges or corners. They are for assembly, play and display - like little works of art.
These construction toys are designed and manufactured in Germany, except for the figurines which are manufactured in Portugal and/or China, to the strictest EC safety and durability standards and carry the CE Mark. They are made of the highest quality plastics, are nontoxic and are extremely durable. They have also complied with the flammability test requirements of CFR 1500.3(c)(6)(vi), “Flammable solid” (FHSA regulations).
The company knows of at least one person in the UK who has had the Large Biplane, Model # 7.22, for eighteen years - it survived three children playing with it over 18 (eighteen!) years, thereby proving the durability of these toys. Check out the Testimonials and Awards pages of the website for more information.
In the mid-1980’s over Sw. Francs 5,000,000 was invested in making the injection molding tools and molds for these toys - they presented a challenge to the injection molding industry because the thickness, quality, colors and surface textures required by Klaus Micklitz, the designer, were totally new. The colors and textures are unique and a hallmark of Mic-O-Mic products!
Mic-O-Mic Americas’ website shows the models and colors with immense accuracy, although the models have to be seen and handled to truly appreciate why so many people collect these for their children, grandchildren and even themselves!

Sol International March 2007 Fu Rin Ka Zan Japanese Samurai Armor 1 Box
Price: 5,000 yen
Manufacturer: Sol International
Release Date: Mar 2007
Type: Trading Figure
Description: Carried by Takeda Shingen on his war banner, 'Fu Rin Ka Zan' is a saying from the Chinese master of the art of war, Sun Tzu, that loosely means 'As fast as the wind, as quiet as the forest, as daring as fire, and immovable as the mountain' (literally it just says 'wind, forest, fire, mountain'), reflecting the very high standards that warriors held themselves to. This series presents the war banners and the armor worn by some of Japan's most famous samurai warriors: Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, Imagawa Yoshimoto, Hojo Soun, Saito Michizo, Sanada Masayuki, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Oda Nobunaga, Yamamoto Kansuke, and one 'secret.' Purely speculation here, but I don't see Toyotomi Hideyoshi's name on that list...and he's definitely one of the most famous samurai warriors in Japanese history...could his armor be the 'secret' item? Or will he be snubbed? There's only one way to find out! Order now! Parts are made of die-cast metal, nylon cloth, and ATBC-PVC plastic. Includes nameplate. Please note that these are trading items and are individually sealed and randomly packed in boxes of 10 before shipment to HobbyLink Japan. As a result we are unable to honor requests for individual or specific figures, nor can we promise you which one(s) you will receive in a box. Please order only if you are willing to accept any of the possible types.

Feb 2007 End of an Era - International Toy Center is being converted to condos
For Harvey Greenfield, who makes stuffed animals for a living, last week's Toy Fair was hardly fun and games.
'It's dead compared to other years. Based on the customer flow and the number of appointments with buyers, it's a different world. I don't even have to be here,' he said.
Standing outside his large showroom at the International Toy Center at 200 Fifth Ave., he gestured to the gutted hallways and rooms on the fifth floor.
'No bathroom on my floor, no heat in the halls, no hot water, most of the elevators are shut down, dust everywhere, that's the way it is,' said Greenfield, chairman of Commonwealth Toy & Novelty Co. Inc.
It is a painful and slow end for the renowned Toy Center building, a place where the yo-yo, Frisbee, G.I. Joe and Barbie made their debuts, and where the annual Toy Fair's been held since 1920.
Two years ago, the landmarked building was sold to a partnership headed by developer Joseph Chetrit, who plans to convert the building with its stunning marble lobby into condominiums.
Slowly, the 60 toy manufacturers left the building as their leases expired. Other tenants had their leases bought out, according to David Levine, vice president of the Chetrit Group.
Only a handful remain. Greenfield and one other toy executive said they have gotten no incentive from Chetrit to leave - except for neglectful conditions.
'It's horrible here,' said Greenfield, pointing to a sign warning about asbestos removal and other 'danger' and 'warning' signs. 'It's intimidation and harassment to force the last of us out.'
As the building emptied, the Toy Fair moved almost in total to the Javits Center, which previously had only a chunk of the business - smaller manufacturers and specialty toy makers in large part.
'Until then, during Toy Fair, we had thousands of buyers coming through here, lunches, parties, celebrities, television coverage and over the years, just about every famous toy you can imagine had its debut here,' said Greenfield, who has been in the building for more than 45 years. 'I had to take a booth there [at the Javits Center] this week. It cost me $40,000, which is a lot of money because I'm already paying [$10,000 monthly] rent here, but besides that, it's not the same fair as when it was here. How can you compare a showroom with offices to a booth?'
The conversion of the International Toy Center is symptomatic of the super-heated real estate market in midtown and with that, the demise of other specialty business districts and buildings. That includes the once flourishing Flower District on Sixth Ave. in the West 20s. And at Fifth Ave. and 26th St., the renowned Gift Building has also been converted into luxury condominiums.
Construction at the Toy Center - which is actually two buildings, one at Fifth Ave. between 23th and 24th Sts. and the adjacent 1107 Broadway - also triggered a welter of litigation with Greenfield and other tenants suing in Manhattan Supreme Court.

2007 American International Toy Fair Musings

My favorite toys tend to have an element of absurdity to them. Select merchandise at Spencers Gifts and the entire contents of the Accoutrements catalog are excellent examples of what I consider fun. When I was much younger, my preferred toys had a more educational slant to them. I couldn't put down my See & Say or this other low-tech device that showed the product of two numbers when you pushed the button down the column and across the row where those two numbers met. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that toys have changed since the simpler days of Lincoln Logs and Play-Doh.
Last week's NY Times suggests that the sky is quite literally the limit when it comes to the present of the $21.3 billion toy industry. Functional materials, like microprocessor chips and special foam, have become cheaper, fueling innovation. But can talking robots and radio-controlled flapping dragonflies compete with Xboxes, PSPs, and Wiis (oh my)?
I went to the 2007 American International Toy Fair to shake my cane at these kids today. Instead, I found a lot of the same stuff I remember squandering my youth on, like stuffed animals so cute I wanted to die (except now you can make your own in an astounding variety), miniature lifestyle products to pretend you are just like mommy and daddy (except now your parents use the phone to prepare meals), and tons of puzzles and board games (except now just about everybody makes a variation on Sudoku or an increasingly customized version of Monopoly).
A popular congregation spot on Sunday was at the booth for Be Amazing who did a live demonstration of what happens when Mentos meets Diet Coke. You have probably already caught the viral video by Eeepy Bird last year. In 2007, Be Amazing is selling you the tools to recreate the experiment at home. Most of their products are meant to inspire the mad scientist inside you, like Insta-Snow, a powder that instantly fluffs upon contact with water. I have a soft spot for inventions and chemistry sets, so I spent a little too much time playing with the snow and the Yuck jar, a variety pack of ways to make realistic looking bodily fluids. That's what I call interactive gaming.
I also chatted with an inventor for Portland's Hog Wild, Eric Hartman, who developed the 'Temperature Controlled Faucet Light' for the company. I'm thinking about buying one for my landlord to teach him the difference between hot and cold water (Just kidding, Paul!).
What are your kids playing with? Can you get them to put down their joysticks (if that's even what they're called any more) and build a space rocket out of sticks? Are you more impressed with the more automated a toy can be? Or, are you like me and would rather impale yourself with a giggling Elmo than gift it to a child?
