Bif Bang Pow June 2009 Flash Gordon - Klytus Death Scene SDCC Exclusive Figure

Bif Bang Pow! Offers Klytus Death Scene SDCC Exclusive

Remember the classic 1980 Flash Gordon movie? The one with all the horrible special effects, silly music, terrible acting and yet was somehow still one of the greatest movies ever made? Yeah, that one. Well, the action figure-making maniacs over at Bif Bang Pow! honored the movie with a release of brilliantly detailed Flash Gordon movie figures, with many variants exclusive only to Entertainment Earth, and somehow connected with comic book artist Alex Roth. They've released figures of Flash, Dale Arden, Ming, Prince Barin, and Klytus (but no Princess Aura? Argh!) and it's Klytus who gets the latest exclusive makeover.
Klytus, Ming the Merciless' right hand man, who looks like an odd combination of Darth Vader and C-3PO, met a gruesome fate towards the end of the movie (did I just let out a spoiler?) and fans of the movie are sure to remember the tongue-wagging, eye-bulging demise of one of planet Mongo's meanest baddies. Now collector's can re-enact the scene with their very own Klytus Death Scene action figure, which sports a face only a mother, or an evil alien dictator, could love.
The figure is being released in conjunction with the San Diego Comic Con and will be available there first, booth #2343 to be exact, or you can pre-order one at Entertainment Earth. Or follow the link for more Flash Gordon figures, but sadly, as I may have mentioned before, no Princess Aura. *sigh*

July 2008 'Big Bang' stars' geeky roles aren't exactly a stretch

If Comic-Con International ever needs official television mascots, the cast and creators of “The Big Bang Theory” would be perfect. They've got the brains. They've got the video-game skills. Co-creator Bill Prady wears a Green Hornet ring and once spent $8,000 on a rare piece of “Star Trek” memorabilia.
And best of all, the team behind the CBS sitcom about four brainy pals and the babe who befriends them have the deep and abiding love of Comic-Con fans, who know a caped comrade when they see one.
“I thought there would be 30 people out there. I had no idea,” said co-star Kunal Nayyar, who – like his cast-mates – was stunned by the masses who flocked to a 2,000-seat room for the shows' panel session yesterday morning.
bang260.jpg width=260 height=294>
NELVIN C. CEPEDA / Union-Tribune
Johnny Galecki (left) and Jim Parsons of “The Big Bang Theory” were a big hit at the autograph booth.
Why do the people of Comic-Con love “The Big Bang Theory”? Maybe because creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady see the people behind the Comic-Con clichés.
Yes, roommates Sheldon (USD alum Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) are physicists who store action figures in their original boxes and keep women at arm's length.
But Sheldon, Leonard, Howard (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Nayyar) are also extremely smart guys who just happen to have a passion for “Star Wars,” “Battlestar Galactica” and three-dimensional chess. Creators Lorre (“Two and a Half Men”) and Prady (“Dharma and Greg”) have a word for guys like that. It's just not the word everyone else has.
“We always struggle with (people) labeling the characters in a demeaning way,” Lorre said during a post-panel press session. “They're brilliant characters, but I guess 'brilliant' is not as good a word for the media as 'geek.' Or 'nerd.' ”
But while Lorre and and Prady took great pains to give their characters some dignity, the actors were happy to indulge their inner geeks. Which turned out to be not too far from the surface.
When the characters play video games on the show, the actors are really playing video games. Galecki is a huge “Star Wars” fan, and Parsons was once an avid action-figure collector. And when asked what kind of costumes they'd wear to Comic-Con, Parsons and Kaley Cuoco (who plays Penny, the babe) got into the spirit of the Comic-Con floor without leaving their table.
Cuoco said she'd dress up as Galecki's character, while Parsons said he would dress up as “Star Wars” robot C3PO.
“You'd make a great C3PO,” Galecki said admiringly. “I'd pay money to see that.”

Bif Bang Pow! August 2008 Dude! Big Lebowski 8" Action Figures

Dude! Big Lebowski Action Figures

dude.jpg

Just in time for the movie's tenth birthday celebrations come these Big Lebowski action figures. And they're awesome. The Dude on the left ('Unemployed') comes with a rug, a milk carton and, yes, a White Russian. He's 8' tall and will cost you $25.
On the right we see the Big Lebowski Urban Achiever Set, with the Dude joined by Walter Sobchak. 8' tall (and we guess Walter is also 8' wide). This set goes for $40, or will when the figures are available in August.
Now, the traditional blog-ending quip: I was going to drop in a movie quote, but it's almost impossible to find one without the f-bomb, so go read them yourself over at IMDB. If not, you are entering a world of pain.

Lansing Nov 2007 Bill would give state power to ban bad toys - Detroit Free Press

LANSING -- The state of Michigan would get legal teeth to ban lead-contaminated toys from stores, under legislation approved by the state Senate today.
The bill would prohibit the manufacture and sale of contaminated toys and child care merchandise -- feeding or sleep items -- and impose civil fines.Items that contain more than 0.06% of lead would be banned -- the same level considered unsafe by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety CommissionThe bill goes to the House, where it will be tied to companion bills that would prohibit the sale of lead-laced children's jewelry and lunchboxes, and create a Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control Commission.

Although the federal government has power to recall and ban lead-contaminated products, 'it has not nearly been fast enough,' said Sen. Roger Kahn, R-Saginaw Township, the main sponsor of the bill. He cited a growing number of products made in China found to contain unsafe levels of lead.

Fines would range from $100 per banned item to $3,000 per item for flagrant violators.

The bill would not apply to collectible toys that are not intended for use by children.

Hasbro Sept 2007 Power Tour Guitar teaches riffs, not to rock - Sci Fi Tech

There is a great divide between learning to play the guitar and actually being able to rock. The Power Tour Guitar from Hasbro and Tiger Electronics can partially help, by teaching riffs without the needing expensive equipment and mangled fingers. This toy guitar lacks strings, instead opting for light-up buttons (think GuitarHero). The buttons will light up and teach riffs from six songs including Smoke on the Water and Wild Thing, both of which are very appropriate for children.
The fun doesn't end there. This guitar can also plug into your MP3 player for live jamming with your favorite songs. No other equipment is needed because the guitar already has a speaker and effects knobs. The Power Tour Guitar will have you well on your way to rocking for $70

Bandai Sept 2007 Power Rangers anniversary - Viral Campaign!

What began as the spin-off of a Japanese franchise, the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series – and its accompanying toy line – were introduced to US audiences in 1993, instantly becoming an elementary-school sensation.
Today, the regularly evolving toys are still among top-selling action brands, said Danielle Armbrust, senior marketing manager at toy manufacturer Bandai America. With the Power Rangers’ core messages of good versus. evil, teamwork, loyalty, courage, and even environmental consciousness, Bandai positions them as ideal “first action-figure for 3-6 year old boys,” she said.
To further engage those boys – as well as their sisters and parents – Bandai last month kicked off a 15-city celebration tour featuring kid-friendly games, giveaways, Power Rangers photo sessions, and the chance to experience Bandai’s new Mega Mission Helmet role-play toy. But the company also has “adult fans who are still collecting Power Rangers, having grown up with the TV show,” in mind, Armbrust said. To address their interests, the tour – running through Nov. 4 at various locations – also includes a “Wall of Legends” showcase and the unveiling of a limited-edition line of Power Ranger collectables.
To draw awareness for the tour, the Rogers Group is promoting it via aggressive media relations to both English- and Spanish-language outlets, said Brenda Lynch, SVP, consumer marketing group and Bandai account head.
That includes third party-endorsed outreach to toy and business trades, regional convention and visitors bureaus, calendar sections, and lifestyle print, online, and radio outlets, she said.
The PR team is also reaching out to Power Rangers’ fan Web sites, Lynch added, particularly in support of a complementary viral effort to get the toy line inducted in Rochester, NY’s National Toy Hall of Fame and Museum. That outreach was positioned as a “secret mission,” where interactive e-mails targeted adult fans and collectors, guiding them through a tour of the brand’s 15-year legacy, and encouraging them to cast their vote for museum recognition.
This marks the first time Bandai has attempted a fan-driven viral campaign on behalf of the Power Rangers.

Hasbro July 2007 Transformers - Real Gear PowerUp Figure - review

With the scarcity of Deluxes, I have gotten a light bulb in my head that I have neglected the second wave of Real Gear figures. The first wave were perhaps some of the best basic TF figures in quite awhile. Now, with the second wave out, we will look at two more of these Real Gear figures. First in line is PowerUp, a Decepticon.
PowerUp has the alt mode of a portable gaming system. Color is primarily white with black edges. Those edges house the game controls. On the left is a D-pad, to the right are 4 action buttons in various colors. The buttons are all linked on a common pad. Both 'pads' do move to give you some sense of being real. However, the start/select buttons in the middle are molded. There is evidence of a small speaker above the select/start buttons. Finally, purple shoulder buttons (also molded) throw the color scheme a bit.
Perhaps more proof that the Real Gear line was a thought for the Cybertron series, PowerUp has a screen shot of Cybertron Jetfire battling in a city scene. How this ties in with the movie is anyone's guess. The back carries the white and black motif and is rather mundane, considering the head is poking out back there. Transformation is simple. The black edges pull out to form the legs. In a bit of automorph technology, pulling the shoulders out will automatically pop out the head.
The robot mode brings out a rather loud neon green in the legs and head. The head is definitely alien looking, if modeled after the traditional alien look. The eyes are also piped green for extra effect. Unlike Spyshot, the pincers for hands don't move.
One of the draws to the Real Gear figures is that the articulation is quite good. PowerUp is no exception to that rule. However, he did have the QC plague. The buttons were scratched up in the packaging and evidence of overspray was everywhere. However, at $7, this little guy is quite the value.

May 2007 Making dolls an exercise in creativity - Bangor Daily News

Making dolls an exercise in creativity
Bangor Daily News, ME -
Every so often I get a yen to make dolls. I don’t know why. As a child, I never played with dolls all that much. Dolls were such a bother. They had to be carried around and that interfered with my propensity to investigate and learn the world with my fingertips. Or the doll had to be wheeled around in a carriage and that put a crimp in my desire to run toward things. Sometimes a doll was more responsibility than I wanted. Yet, I have a trunk full of rag dolls I’ve made over the years whenever my creative impulses propelled me in that creative direction. One of the things I like about making a rag doll is that the cost to make it is very little or nothing, depending on what I have on hand for supplies. The dolls I like best are the ones I concoct from my own crude patterns, which I draw on a sheet of 8½- by 11-inch paper folded in half lengthwise. These dolls are usually 'folksy' in style with simple embroidered features and clothing that is rough around the edges. I often dip the fabrics in tea to brown them up a little and I like the cloth to be a bit crumpled. I leave edges to ravel and sew big, mismatched buttons on the clothes. I like to stuff these dolls with fine sawdust to give them a pleasing weight and make them sit well on a shelf — until into the trunk they go. Most often, the dolls I make are not intended as playthings. Nor can they be construed as 'art.' At best, they are a personification of my creative impulse to employ a variety of needlework skills — sewing, embroidery and pattern-making. Making a doll, I have found, requires certain things. It needs to be sewn by machine, otherwise the seams won’t hold up against the pressure of stuffing. Curves at the neck or waist need to be clipped so the shape will be true when it’s turned. If the stuffing is fiberfill, a knitting needle or a chopstick makes a good 'tamper.' If the stuffing is sawdust, a funnel is a handy tool to have around. Mohair yarn makes good hair for dolls, but for dolls of a crude variety, I make a row of French knots along the seam line at the top of the head. Sometimes, I paint on the doll’s hair with craft paints. Recently, 'Toys to Sew,' by Claire Garland, came across my desk. It fed my interest in doll- and toy-making. It’s a delightful little book containing instructions for dolls, animals and doll clothes. A doll featured in the book is a whimsical creature with long legs and appliqued felt eyes. Her clothing includes a faux fur-trimmed vest, socks and a poncho. Her male counterpart sports a Hawaiian shirt, a red raincoat or a navy blue turtleneck sweater. A ballerina, a pirate and a fairy angel are other versions of the doll. Children who love stuffed animals will delight in a handmade pink elephant, a crocodile, a traditional teddy bear, a puppy, tiger and monkey crafted from socks, and a T-rex dinosaur of red felt — patterns moms who sew will have little difficulty working with. A bevy of little felt bears in waistcoats rounds out the book. Patterns and templates, which need to be enlarged on a photocopier, are included. Machine sewing skills are necessary to make the toys.

Princess power - Bradenton Herald

'Princesses are hotter than ever,' said Adrienne Citrin, spokeswoman for the Toy Industry Association. 'If anything, it's getting even bigger.'
The princess play pattern has been a perennial favorite of girls ages 3 to 7, partly because age 3 is when kids develop a sense of gender permanence. The princess is a very identifiable girl role model, good or bad.
But industry observers credit Disney for elevating princess marketing to an art form. It started in 2001, around the time that Andy Mooney, formerly of Nike and now chairman of Disney Consumer Products, attended his first 'Disney on Ice' show in Phoenix.
'I always go back to this lightbulb event . . . of witnessing all of these little girls showing up in full regalia from tiara to slippers,' Mooney said. 'At that time we were not offering princess products that would really enable them to do that.'
Mooney saw an opportunity that resulted in a line comprising more than 25,000 princess-themed items, from dresses and wands to plates and ball-and-bat sets. The line has driven princess sales from $300 million in 2001 to $3.4 billion last year.
'The strategy was no more complicated than give the little girls what they want,' Mooney said.
The DVD releases of 'Cinderella' and other such tales have fueled the fairy-tale fixation as never before.
'What's interesting about the DVD consumer is the average boy or girl watches it 37 times,' Mooney said. 'Any parent will tell you that that's not an exaggeration.'
A similar approach has worked for Mattel. Its direct-to-video 'Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princesses' helped make Barbie the No. 1 toy for girls during the 2006 holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation.
All of its Barbie princess releases have reached No. 1 on the children's video charts, with a new one, 'Barbie as the Island Princess,' coming out this fall.
Mattel's and Disney's princesses reign supreme, but they're not the only royals, which is part of what Lyn Michael Brown, co-author of 'Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters From Marketers' Schemes' (St. Martin's Press, $24.95) sees as a problem.
'It's not that the princess and pink stuff is so bad, it's just that increasingly it's become so monolithic,' Brown said. 'It's not just the Halloween costumes or Disney. If you go to Lego, the only pink section is a pink castle with princesses.'
Progress with diversity and gender helps explain why some formerly uneasy-with-the-crown parents have accepted their daughters' fancy.
'Twenty years ago, there was a feeling that boys and girls weren't on equal footing,' said Chuck Scothon, Mattel senior vice president and girls division head. 'I think that's completely gone today. Now it's about taking what's unique to a boy and a girl and celebrating that.'
The scrappy Spanish-speaking character Dora the Explorer came out in royal form a couple of years ago, to mixed reactions.
'I think a lot of moms were let down by that because we think of Dora as the anti-princess, tough and real,' said Camille Chatterjee, articles editor of Parenting magazine.
'That shows how far the trend has come: Et tu, Dora?'
Viewed another way, Dora revises the stereotype of a pale-skinned, passive princess.
'That's the good thing about how they're portrayed today - a princess doesn't have to be this helpless victim,' Chatterjee said. 'It doesn't just have to be about the clothes and the pink and the purple.'
Though lower profile than Cinderella, Ariel and Snow White, Disney's princess lineup includes Mulan, Jasmine and Pocahontas.
Princess worship may be potent, but it also passes - a point stressed by Disney's Mooney, who said he is 'the father of a 12-week-old future princess' himself.

'Transformers' and GM form power partnership - Prdomain Business Register

'Transformers' and GM form power partnership
21 Feb 2007 , Los Angeles : Four new movie stars - 'Bumblebee™,' 'Autobot Jazz®,' 'Autobot Ratchet®' and 'Ironhide®' - from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures,' in association with Hasbro's, forthcoming July 4th action-adventure release, 'Transformers™,' were introduced this evening by General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) as it hosted its sixth annual 'ten' pre-Oscar fashion event at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood.

'Bumblebee' changes from the classic Chevrolet Camaro, and is a central character in the saga of aliens who take mechanical forms when on Earth. 'Autobot Jazz' converts from a Pontiac Solstice in a hardtop format. A Hummer H2, modified as a rescue vehicle, changes into 'Autobot Ratchet,' and 'Ironhide' changes from a GMC TopKick medium-duty truck. They all star in this summer's live-action blockbuster, 'Transformers,' from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, in association with Hasbro, which will premiere July 4.

Buzz about the roles that these vehicles play in the movie has been spreading since a quick glimpse of the new Camaro was spotted in Paramount's newest 'Transformers' trailer, which began appearing in theaters on Dec. 20, 2006. This clip, which is currently the most-viewed movie trailer on Yahoo!, also contains images of the Solstice, H2 and TopKick for fans who were quick enough to have freeze-framed it.

''Transformers' is a compelling project and offers us a global platform for marketing GM products and building our brands,' said Mike Jackson, GM North America vice president, marketing and advertising. 'It represents the perfect intersection of entertainment, marketing and design.'

'The first time I saw the new Camaro, while touring the GM Design Center, I knew immediately that it would be the perfect 'Bumblebee,'' said Michael Bay, the film's Director. He continued, 'It's got beautiful lines and a classic, timeless look. There were no other cars that came even close. I have had a great working relationship with GM for many years and am psyched to be working with them on 'Transformers.''

Gerry Rich, President of Worldwide Marketing at Paramount Pictures, added, 'We are thrilled to be working with GM on this incredible and action-packed film. Having integrated the cars as characters in the film is truly an innovative concept that will help eventize this exciting 4th of July tentpole film.'

GM will roll out a fully integrated marketing and promotional effort around the film in the near future, including a major Chevrolet promotion, according to Jackson.
