Hasbro Oct 2007 G.I.Joe Question & Answers With Hasbro Round 4

G.I.Joe Question & Answers With Hasbro Round 4
Each month we submit 5 reader-generated questions to the Hasbro design team for G.I.Joe. Here is the latest batch of questions and answers for October:

TNI: Will the figures in the special wave of single-carded box set figures coming out at the end of the year be the exact same figures as those already released, or will some of the joint and articulation problems be fixed on these versions?

Hasbro: They will be exactly the same as the figures in the box sets. Look for new articulation in the first wave of 2008.

TNI: Exactly what will people have to do to get the very cool-looking Doc mail-away figure shown at this year's Con?

Hasbro: To get Doc, fans will have to send in 6 proof of purchase stickers from the Comic Packs.

TNI: Can you tell us more about the rank building evolution type sets to be released at TRU stores (as announced at this year's Con)? How many figures will be released in each set, what figures will be in the initial sets, and will these be new figures or just re-released ones?

Hasbro: We will be debuting these at the GI Joe Club soon. These packs will have three figures and highlight the ranks of both Cobra and GI Joe.

TNI: Will the new IG Destro have a soft good cape or a hard plastic cape?

Hasbro: This will be soft goods.

TNI: Word at the convention was that a Crimson Guard Commander comic 2-pack would be released in the second wave of comic packs. Is this true?

Hasbro: Other than the wave 1 Comic Pack characters, we've only confirmed the Dreadknoks comic pack.

One2Believe Oct 2007 Tales of Glory at Walmart: Toy maker fights moral decline with Bible-based action figures ...

The Biblical Figures in the 'Tales of Glory' series are made by California-based One2Believe.  CEO David Socha, 37, co-founded his own toy company 15 years ago. Socha said he was called to start a line of Christian toys after witnessing a general decline in the moral fiber of the toy industry.
“The most popular toys now, most parents don’t want their children playing with dolls that promote promiscuity,” Socha said. “This is our place to say ‘enough.’ ” His company began developing Tales of Glory about three years ago, a process that included visiting 6,000-7,000 churches for research.
From those talks emerged the toy line, complete with a Herculean Samson, graceful Esther and talking Jesus. Twenty-five characters tell dozens of stories, many with sound, and each comes with pamphlets and Bible verses.
The dolls are found online on major dot-coms such as target.com, as well as in Christian stores. Several area Wal-Marts are among the 500 such stores nationwide carrying the collection.
But beyond just teaching about the Bible, these are characters children can relate to, Socha said.
“Esther was a minority queen Moses, who was slow of speech, became a great leader,” he said. “I think kids can relate to that. These are characters that walked the earth.”
Socha said some might call him an ignorant CEO because, “to me, it is a ministry first,” he said.
But a debut appearance in Wal-Mart can be likened to heavenly manna — certainly great exposure for Tales of Glory, with the potential for large profits.

Mattel Aug 2007 Answers for parents with questions about Mattel toy recall - Quad-Cities Online

What to do about the extensive recall of toys by Mattel?
Here are some answers for parents.
Question: What toy was recalled because of lead paint?
Answer: Sarge, a die-cast character from the movie 'Cars.' It is a 3-inch-long, olive green vehicle with a white star on the hood. It may have been sold individually or in assortment packs between May and August.
Q: Which toys were recalled because of magnets?
A: Sixty-three toys: four kinds of Batman Magna action figures, the Shonen Jump's One Piece play set, toys in the Polly Pocket and Doggie Daycare product lines, and the blue pooper scooper in the Barbie & Tanner play set. See the Mattel Web site, service.mattel.com/us/, for photographs and detailed descriptions of each toy involved in the recall, or call the Mattel recall hotline, (888) 597-6597.
Q: How do I know whether the recall affects my child's Sarge car?
A: The recall applies only to models that are marked 'CHINA' on the underside and have a six-character code in white that ends with '7EA.' Sarge cars that were made in Thailand or with product codes that end in 5EA, 6Ea or AZare not affected.
Q: What do I do if my child's Sarge car is affected?
A: Take it away from your child immediately. Go to the Mattel Web site and follow links to the recall information. From there, you can request a prepaid mailing label that will be e-mailed to you. Use the label to return the toy. Mattel will ship you a $7 voucher within 12 weeks, good at most retailers for any Mattel or Fisher-Price product. Or try Mattel's recall hotline.
Q: What kinds of injuries can the recalled products cause?
A: Lead paint can be toxic to children if it is ingested. The magnets in the recalled Mattel toys can fall out. If a child swallows more than one magnet, the pieces may attract one another and cause a potentially fatal intestinal tear, blockage or infection. If the magnet is inhaled into the lungs, immediate surgery is required, and magnets placed in a child's nose or ears could cause swelling and be difficult to remove.
Q: How many injuries from the recalled products have been reported?
A: None, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall is being done voluntarily to prevent possible injury.
Q: Is this recall different from the recent Fisher-Price recall involving lead paint?
A: Yes. The first recall covered 83 types of toys, including Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer toys, coated with lead paint and made by Mattel's Fisher-Price division.
Q: How did the problems related to the latest recall occur?
A: The manufacturer of the Sarge vehicles, Early Light Industrial Co. of China, subcontracted the painting of some parts to Hong Li Da, a Chinese company that violated Mattel's standards and used an uncertified supplier's paints. The magnet problems affected toys made between January 2002 and January 2007. Mattel said it has since established new manufacturing standards for magnetic toys.
Q: Where else can I go for information?
A: The Consumer Product Safety Commission maintains recall information on its Web site, www.cpsc.gov. It also has a hotline at (800) 638-2772 to handle reports of dangerous products or injuries caused by consumer products. Also try your state attorney general's office.

Sideshow 2007 Answering questions...
Halo asks: What would it cost ME to have a 12-inch figure made of myself, as my own custom Star Wars character?
SSC: The short answer is, it is a very, very expensive process to have a one-of-a-kind (a prototype) figure of you made entirely from scratch, and it is not a service that Sideshow offers. Do you have any artistic friends? Some good relationships can make this a much more affordable process... There are several artists (again, NOT Sideshow, so please do not contact us about making a custom figure!) who will do commissioned portrait work, and the beauty of the 12-inch format is that your customization options are pretty amazing. Once you have your head, you could reasonably expect to find any costume or accessory that you might want (almost everything - EVERYTHING - has been made by some company or some individual at this point). Customization is all about taking a little bit from here, a little bit from there, and building it up into a completely original figure, which is a much less expensive process than constructing everything from scratch. Many companies, including Sideshow, even sell 1/6 scale model bodies especially for customizers to build up!

Almighty Heroes Dec 2006 Bible action figures showcase brawn and beauty

High and mighty

A line of Bible action figures aims for the Christian market, emphasizing brawn and beauty.

By Tanya Barrientos
Inquirer Staff Writer
Queen Esther.
Queen Esther.

You could call them Bible Bratz, or He-Men for a Higher Authority.
But Don Levine, who created the G.I. Joe doll in 1964, calls his new line of biblical action figures the Almighty Heroes.
There's Queen Esther, a doe-eyed brunette hottie dressed in a shimmery pink ball gown with plenty of plastic gemstone bling. And Moses (before the beard years) with biceps as big as The Rock's and a righteous pharaoh headdress.
There's Deborah the Warrior, who looks remarkably like Jessica Simpson the Warbler. And action Noah, who looks like, well, nobody seems quite sure.
'I saw this line as a way to teach about the quest of good over evil,' said Levine, who established his own company, Family Values L.L.C. of Shakopee, Minn., to market the dolls.
'I'm very passionate about what is going on in the world right now, seeing youngsters with guns, seeing terrorism and all that,' he said in a telephone interview. 'I wanted to come up with characters kids can look to as heroes.'
Truth be told, he's also seeking a profit.
'There are two billion Christians out there,' Levine said. 'Quite a niche market.'
In other words, for a savvy businessman with the right product, Levine said, a new twist on the Old Testament could bring manna from heaven.
Currently, the toys are not available at mainstream stores. They are being sold for $12.99 to $24.99 at Christian stores, and online at Amazon.com and at Familyvaluescenter.com.

Almighty Heroes Dec 2006 Holy Joe! Bible-based action figures - Philadelphia Daily News

Hey, all you guys out there. Got a mission for you. Next time you visit the folks, ask if they kept any of your old childhood Christmas wish lists.
If you're a guy between the ages of 20 and 45, odds are somewhere on that list was the manliest, hardiest, kung-fu-grippingest of all boyhood toys: G.I. Joe.
If you ever found a Real American Hero action figure under the Christmas tree, the man you need to thank is not Kris Kringle. It's 78-year-old Don Levine, inventor of the 12-inch G.I. Joe action figure.
Now Levine, who parted ways with toymaker Hasbro in 1975, is launching a new toy line for a generation young enough to be his great-grandkids: the Almighty Heroes, a line of action figures and fashion dolls based on biblical figures like Moses, Noah and Queen Esther.
For $12.99, you get a pose-able, fully accessorized Old Testament figure and a comic book that tells why each one kicked so much biblical butt. The women resemble Bratz dolls and wear pink lipstick; the men come with swords and shields and look more like He-Man. (Samson is sporting long, luxurious plastic hair, a copper breastplate and what appear to be Ugg boots.) You can order the figures online at familyvaluescenter.com.
Recently, the Times asked Levine how and why he traded in Joe's rifle for David's rock and sling (Goliath not included).
Before we get into the Almighty Heroes, you were one of the creators of G.I. Joe, right?
The creator.
The creator. Okay. Give me the short version of how G.I. Joe came to be.
I was in the Korean conflict for about two years. Being involved with the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Corps, I felt as though those people, women and men, were heroes. When I got back into the business world and joined Hasbro, I felt very familiar with everything having to do with the military. I piped up and said, 'Let's do an action figure for boys about the military.'... We were going crazy trying to come up with a name for it. All of a sudden, I'm watching television, and there was a black and white movie that comes on called 'The Story of G.I. Joe.' We found out that 'G.I. Joe' was not registered for anything in the toy area. That was the genesis of G.I. Joe.
How did you feel about the shrinking of Joe, from 12 inches to 3 ¾ inches, in the '80s?
Didn't like it at all. But it became a necessity. Oil prices went up, and that's what you make plastic out of. And 'Star Wars' had come out with a smaller version. But no, the 12-inch was always what I wanted to do.
So who came up with the idea of Bible-based action figures?
I did. I thought to myself, Wouldn't it be interesting to put together heroes from the Bible, action figures? Not like, let's say, Charlton Heston coming down from the mount with a robe and sandals on, but somebody modern. The idea is to teach children exactly what the Bible talks about, and the strength of what it is.
How do you take the source material, the Bible, and make it interesting to kids ?
With every figure, there is a mini illustrated Bible adventure. I spent a year having people write stories from the Bible, and I visited priests and ministers and rabbis and Sunday schools to tailor what we were doing... . I wanted to be able to combine it with what boys are interested in now, having their little weapons.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't recall reading anywhere in the Bible that Noah had a crossbow.
In one of the stories about Noah, they talk about him being a carpenter and also a hunter. That was basically the story we hooked onto.

Almighty Heroes line cast as fighters in good vs. evil war
Friday, November 17, 2006
By JASON KANE
Religion News Service

It's been 42 years since G.I. Joe marched into American toy stores to revolutionize the action-figure industry. Don Levine's miniature Army men - inspired by years of military service during the Korean War - tapped into the aggressive fantasies of patriotic American boys.
Now Levine is hoping to repeat that success, but this time he's asking the world's youth to fight for God.
Levine's latest line of figurines - Almighty Heroes - includes accessorized and poseable versions of Moses, Noah, David and Samson. As head of Shakopee, Minn.-based Family Values LLC, Levine says good vs. evil continues to be the most vexing issue facing humanity. He's convinced that his new toys will once again persuade America's youth to tip the balance and save the world - if only in the sandbox. The figures retail from $12.99 to $24.99.
Levine recently spoke with Religion News Service about his new line of toys.
Q: What inspired you to turn Bible personalities into poseable action figures?
A: When it came to something in our world called good vs. evil, the market for something like Almighty Heroes comes right from the Bible. It certainly shows the good in the world and the evil that the Bible characters are up against.
(Marketers) have to be in today's world, and today's world is action figures for young boys. This is a niche market - 2 billion Christians in the world. It's a niche market that's very deep.
Q: What's your evidence that this market is interested in your toys?
A: We tested it with different religious people, with ministers, with priests and with rabbis, people like that who would talk to us. And they were a little bit unsure when they saw Moses not looking like a Charlton Heston coming down from the mountain but a young Moses.
If someone came in with their young children, the boys went crazy over these figures, and so did the girls. We know we've got a hit on our hands.

The Marine Corps Toys for Tots program in Los Angeles has declined the donation of 4,000 Bible-quoting Jesus dolls. - Nov 2006

Fun with Jesus

Jesusdoll The Marine Corps Toys for Tots program in Los Angeles has declined the donation of 4,000 Bible-quoting Jesus dolls.
A spokesman for the Marines said they didn't want to take the chance of sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or Muslim family.
I don't see what the problem is with that. Are we forgetting that Jesus was a Jew and that Muslims consider Jesus a great prophet?
The bigger problem for me is exactly how does one 'play' with a Jesus doll?
Barbie has her clothes and sports car and dream house. GI Joe has his Jeeps and tanks and weaponry, not to mention the infamous 'kung-fu grip.'
When you get a Jesus doll are the disciples extra? Are there tiny loaves and fishes? How about some lepers?
What kid wouldn't want to while away the hours having action figure Jesus cure some lepers?
I'm betting the cross and burial shroud also are extra

Transformers Cybertron Video Game - Quest For Cybertron
transformers_game.jpg We have come across a page for a development firm supposedly handling some of the duties in creating a Transformers Cybertron video game entitled 'The Quest for Cybertron'. Brooklyn Games has an image online showing some scenes from the development. Of note, this is copywritten to 2005, and no word has been released prior to this about the game, other than a general possibility way back when the Transformers Armada Video Game game was out. So it's possible this was just a development that never fully realized.

Talking Bible Dolls pray to replace Barbie
Mr. Potato Head, G.I. Joe and Barbie were among the top picks on VH1’s recent “Best Of” Toy list chosen by music channel’s 20- and 30-something demographic. To kids growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s, nothing was cooler than dive-bombing their army figurines or giving a potato man a tongue.

Alvarez answers 20 questions on the new club exclusive figure
Last night on the club forums, Rik Alvarez took some time out at the Transformers club forums to play a game of 20 questions regarding the soon to be announced club exclusive figure. Not all of the questions were answered, either because they were skipped over or because they were too specific/would give too much away. However, a great deal of interesting tidbits were handed out. Alvarez's answers to the 20 questions were as follows:

ANSWER #1: LARGER THAN A DELUXE.
ANSWER #2: MALE
ANSWER #3: DECEPTICON
ANSWER #4: BASED ON AN EXISTING CHARACTER.
ANSWER #5: HE COMES WITH A MINI-CON.
ANSWER #6: YES, IT IS AN ARMADA MOLD.
ANSWER #7: YES, HE HAS A NEW HEAD.
ANSWER #8: 'I' DONT KNOW AS OF YET, IF IT WILL HAVE THE ELECTRONICS.
ANSWER #9: YES, IT COMES WITH THE ORIGINAL MINI-CON.
ANSWER #10: BASED ON A CHARACTER FROM GENERATION ONE.
ANSWER #11: YES, HE HAS HAD A PREVIOUS TOY.
ANSWER #12: NO, THE MINI-CON IS A NEW CHARACTER.
ANSWER #13: YES IT HAS BEEN REINCARNATED IN ANOTHER LINE.
ANSWER #14: HE IS NOT A LEADER.
ANSWER #15: SIMILAR TO THE ORIGINAL TOY, BUT GINORMOUSLY DIFFERENT IS SEVERAL WAYS.
ANSWER #16: COLORS INCLUDE YET ARE NOT LIMITED TO GRAY AND PURPLE.
ANSWER #17: HE IS SOMEWHAT OF A REINVISIONED VERSION OF THE G1 CHARACTER. I.E. CYBERTRON BLURR. DISCLAIMER: HOWEVER, THE COMIC WRITERS MAY CHOOSE ANOTHER ORIGIN AT SOME POINT IF IT FLOWS BETTER WITH THE STORY.
ANSWER #18: THIS CHARACTER HAS BEEN SEEN IN THE SHOW SINCE THE MOVIE.
ANSWER #19: YES, HE HAS ONLY EVER BEEN A DECEPTICON.
ANSWER #20: THIS FIGURE IS NOT MOLDED IN CLEAR PLASTIC.

There are only a limited number of characters and molds that fulfill these requirements, so speculation is already spreading like wildfire. Club members can visit the members only forums to view all of the questions that were asked, and be sure to join in our discussion on the 2005 Boards as well.
