About Basic Fun
Basic Fun began in 1991 with the idea of creating a working miniature keychain of the highly popular Super Soaker. With its success, it led to an entire category within the toy industry. Since then, over 1,000 unique, licensed keychains have been developed and marketed by Basic Fun, with over 65 million pieces sold world-wide. Over the years we have expanded beyond keychains and found success in novelty & impulse toys and recently handheld electronic games, affinity programs and Fisher Price classic toy re-creations. Now with over 80 licensing agreements from industry leaders such as Hasbro, Lucas Films, Nintendo and Nickelodeon, Basic Fun continues to lead the licensed impulse category with inventive, high quality toys and accessories.

In 2008 Basic Fun became a division of The Good Stuff Company.

Anime Leader and Major Amusement Game Operator Introduce Game Featuring Dragon Ball Z Figures

Flower Mound, Texas (July 15, 2009) – FUNimation Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corporation, Toei Animation, Ltd., and Namco Cybertainment Inc., one of the largest amusement game operators in the U.S. and Caribbean, are bringing the Z-fighters to more than 780 amusement centers around the country.

Already available, these centers house a new crane game containing figures of Goku, his friends and foes.  The Dragon Ball Z figure crane game will offer an entirely new experience for those who are familiar with the old crane concept. Instead of directing a crane claw to a random and, hopefully, substantial grip on a desired prize, crane players are able to utilize their skills to line up the claw fingers with one or more of the eight holes in the custom figure packaging for a precise hook on their favorite Dragon Ball Z figures. These collector edition figure prizes are designed and manufactured by Banpresto Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan and cannot be found in retail stores.

Created by Akira Toriyama and produced by Toei Animation, the anime series “Dragon Ball Z” has taken millions of fans around the globe in search of adventure and the chance to put Goku’s skills to the test. A valiant warrior, he has saved the Earth as he faced powerful villains. Now, Dragon Ball Z fans can then test their own agility and hand-eye coordination in playing the crane game. Fans can visit this online store locator to find the nearest game at an amusement center near them.

July 2009 Have Fun with your Action Figures - Just Add a Chipmunk!

In the world of collecting action figures, it's easy to get caught up in the whole these-are-precious-collectibles attitude, thus finding yourself handling every figure, still sealed within their pristine packaging, like a curator of the Smithsonian handles an ancient priceless artifact. While this may be the impressive habit of many collectors, it's still wonderful to see someone having fun with their action figures and no one drives that message home better than Canadian collector, Chris McVeigh.
Chris, a professional illustrator, took a whimsical view in a recent personal project where he posed various Star Wars action figures in a park and patiently waited until real live chipmunks approached the display and then, like a hunter sighting his prey, he snaps a hilarious picture and solidifies his place as an internet sensation and one of the greatest fun-loving action figure collectors in the world.
Courtesy of the Telegraph.co.uk website and Barcroft Media, these pictures baffle the mind with the absurd, yet immensely enjoyable, juxtaposition of pop culture pieces of plastic and adorable woodland creatures. This is one of those moments where I find myself asking, 'Now, why didn't I think of that?!' I honestly spent a good 15 minutes looking over each picture and laughing like a fool, while trying to discern if these photos were actually Photoshopped collages. I've come to the conclusion, with the help of some online buzz, that these are the real deal. Still, I'm amazed at how McVeigh managed to get a Biker Scout on the back of a wild chipmunk!

Dec 2007 Japanese Pension Funds vanish ....

Japanese Pension

This blue little booklet contains information which theoretically allows one to get hold of some pension when one retires. All folks working in Japan for employers who do legit accounting have to pay pension which is deducted with tax when the monthly wage is paid.
Unfortunately, it looks like millions of Japanese pension payers are not going to receive a single yen due to a discovery that was made earlier this year.

The population of Japan is about 130 million. It was discovered that 50 million pension accounts became 'undefinable' meaning that even if you retire and go to claim your pension, you have no guarantee of getting any of it back.

The Nenkin Techo [年金手帳> or 'Pension Booklet' contains your unique number which you would then use to claim money when you retire. At the moment, this number means nothing for millions of people as they would be told that 'we don't know where your pension is' or 'can you prove you paid your pension?'

There was an election during the year and all the politicians made promises pre-election period to solve the issue by March 2008. Now that its post election, we see them on TV and the other media saying how it was election time and that they couldn't just say 'we'd try.'
Me thinks that the pension money has been pocketed by many politicians.

The amount of tax deducted from ones pay is bad but paying money for nothing (in this case pension) is even worse.
The amount of income tax/national health and pension thats deducted depends on ones salary. If you are in the 10,000,000 yen+ bracket then it would be about 20 - 30% and if you start getting in to the 1,000,000,000 yen bracket then it can be like 40 - 50% deducted (so I hear ^^;)

Whats it like in your region? Are you left with peanuts after all these bits n pieces are deducted?

Dec 2007 Plastic Clamshell Packaging Not Fun At Present-Opening Time!
Few things detract more from the spontaneity and joy of the season's gift-opening rituals than prying open a plastic package with your teeth.
Countless gift items, from consumer electronics to toys, look so appealing while entombed in their clear-plastic clamshell packaging. But extricating an action figure, and cutting thick plastic seams sealed together with heat, can seem like an endeavor worthy of the Jaws of Life. Even less extreme packaging has drawbacks. A cardboard box with a plastic window, for example, may display merchandise nicely. But items are often anchored with painfully twisted wires and rubber bands that seem impossible to untangle.Manufacturers say retailers love -- and even insist upon -- the hard-to-open packaging as a measure to reduce theft. Shoplifters cost retailers, and ultimately consumers, $13.3 billion in 2006, the most recent year for which information is available, according to a survey conducted by the University of Florida for the National Retail Federation in Washington. The protective packaging also makes products visually pleasing and protects them during shipping, say manufacturers. Frustrated consumers can now even purchase tools, such as Package Shark Pro and OpenX, designed for opening impenetrable plastic.
To test the consumer-friendliness of theft-resistant, protective packaging, we tried to open five randomly selected gift items without using sharp implements -- at least at the outset -- and timed our progress. We matched our testers with items appropriate for their ages, and provided assistance to our child-age testers only when it seemed necessary. We learned it's nearly impossible to open many items without a sharp implement, so keep scissors or an opening tool handy during holiday festivities, and bring one if you're a guest. Remove toys from their original packaging if they contain numerous small pieces and box them on your own, or you may ruin the moment by having to untangle a mess of wires. We wasted almost 15 minutes opening one such toy.
Our 11-year-old tester was drawn to a set of motion-activated drumsticks, mi Jam Drummer, in a plastic clamshell package. Opening the electronic toy without using a sharp implement seemed impossible. We could not tear the thick sealed edges. Cutting with our scissors was even difficult. Once we snipped open a corner, we again tried tearing, but had to be careful of sharp points along edges of the plastic. A spokesman for mi Jam manufacturer Blue Box Toys Inc., in Livingston, N.J., said the packaging offers both security and visual appeal, but the company is modifying it next year to a box with a window-type opening.

Disney Sept 2007 Family Fun Karito Kids World Collection - #1 Means The Same Thing In Any Language
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Whether you say it in English (number one!), Chinese (shu ma yi!), Swahili (hesabu moja!), Spanish (numero uno!) or Italian (novero una!) it all translates the same way: The best of the best. Of course, these five languages are how the dolls who make up the Karito Kids World Collection® would say it. That's because this brand new and totally unique line of dolls and books is completely international.

It is a testament to the high-quality of Karito Kids World Collection that they made the 16th annual FamilyFun Toy of the Year (T.O.Y.) Awards list in their flagship year. But it's even more impressive that after extensive testing of more than 200 toys - by invitation only - Karito Kids was crowned with the #1 spot. According to parent company KidsGive co-founder, Laura Rangel, 'We are so absolutely thrilled around here you have no idea. This company and product began as a dream from my business partner, Lisa and I, so to see it become a reality is phenomenal. Now add this amazing award and we are overjoyed.'
Published by Disney Publishing Worldwide, FamilyFun is the nation's largest magazine targeting families with children ages 3 to 12 years old, with a rate base of 2 million and an audience of 4.8 million. Here's why FamilyFun awarded Karito Kids with the Toy of the Year Award, as described in the November issue, which hits newsstands October 9th:
Karito Kids Dolls
Number 1 Toy of the Year
Recommended Ages: 6 and up
Price: $99.99
'Our testers were instantly drawn to the beautiful true-to-life faces of the Karito Kids World Collection -- stylish yet sweet girls from China, Italy, Kenya, the United States, and Mexico. But once they read about each 21-inch-tall doll, her country, and her particular passion (soccer, fashion, panda bears) in the included adventure books, they were truly smitten. A bonus: 'tweens can go online to direct 3 percent of their doll's retail price to a children's charity.'

Toys 'R' Us Aug 2007 Funtastic recall wooden art cases - MarketWatch

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Toys 'R' Us Inc. on Thursday announced a recall of about 27,000 Imaginarium wooden coloring cases that were made in China because the printed ink on the outer packaging of the wood case contains lead.
In addition, some of the black watercolor paint contains excessive levels of lead, which violates the federal lead paint standard, the CPSC said. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed, the agency said. The wooden coloring case includes crayons, pastels, colored pencils, fiber pens, a paintbrush, pencil, water colors, palette, white paint, ruler and pencil sharpener in a light tan wooden carrying case. The case measures about 14 inches high by 19 inches wide.
The announcement is the latest in a string of high-profile recalls pulling Chinese-made toys and household items from store shelves due to unacceptable amounts of lead paint or other hazards. Earlier this month, announced worldwide recalls involving millions of toys from China because of the presence of lead paint or powerful magnets that could be swallowed.

This latest recall involves 8,300 wooden art sets, marketed under the Imaginarium label, and sold from October 2006 through August 2007 in all Toys 'R' Us stores and on its Web site. A total of 27,000 art sets were purchased from Funtastic, Toys 'R' Us said, but only 8,300 were sold to customers during the recall period.

Toys 'R' Us said it terminated its relationship with Funtastic, effective immediately.

WowWee July 2007 Roboquad Toy Robot Fun for Kids

The colors are familiar and there's a telltale Robosapien logo on the chest, but WowWee's new Roboquad looks unlike any toy or robot you've seen before.
With four 'legs,' a body like a 1970s airport terminal and a longish neck topped off with a flat head, it's more crustacean than automaton.
More than any robot toy WowWee's produced before, the Roboquad defies description.
• Click here for FOXNews.com's Patents and Innovation Center.
It's 14 inches tall, weighs roughly 3 pounds, and comes, like all other WowWee toys, with a remote control that lets you control movement and, to an extent, mood.
The Roboquad operates in four different 'personalities': default, Activity, Aggression and Awareness; each of these can be set at different levels.
There is also an Autonomy mode, which allows Roboquad to roam freely and interact with its environment. Each setting affects how the robot walks, sounds, looks around, and reacts to stimuli.

Pratt House May 2007 The Art of Fun: Collectible Toys and Children's Memorabilia
The Art of Fun: Collectible Toys and Children's Memorabilia,' featuring toys and memorabilia from the early to mid 20th century, will be on display at the John Wells Pratt House Museum starting next week.
'I think this exhibit will appeal to all ages,' said museum coordinator Julie Yankowsky. 'This is something that a family can come to. The Baby Boomers will probably like to come and see it. Even the little kids would probably like to come and see it. It's just a broad spectrum to open it up to the widest audience possible.'
An opening reception for the new exhibit will be held Wednesday, May 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pratt House, located at 177 S. First St. in Fulton.
'There's a little bit of something for everyone,' said Mrs. Yankowsky. 'We have dolls, Tinker toys, Lincoln Logs, puppets, and cowboy and Indian toys.'
Some of the items in the exhibit are a part of the museum's collection while others have been donated by members of the Friends of History in Fulton, the city's historical society, and other members of the community.
'A lot of it has been donated,' she said. 'We have tea sets for a tea party and vintage photographs.'
The exhibit will also include an interactive display focusing on child's play with game and dress-up, said Mrs. Yankowsky.
'We are going to have a kid's corner, which I am kind of excited about,' she said. 'We will have a trunk with dress-up clothes. We will also have Legos, Lincoln Logs, and other games.'
The opening reception will be followed at 7 p.m. by 'Truth Be Told,' a local author reading in commencement of a five-week writing workshop at the Pratt House led by writer Brittney Fiorini Jerred.

Aoshima July 2007 Funny Knights Masterpiece of Yamashita Shunya: Rudy - painted PVC 1/7 scale

If you're a figure lover… and a sexy girl lover, Yamashita Shunya is a name you very likely know, and if you don't, then you should. Carrying on from the success of last year's Sela figure, Shunya's newest figure, fully named Funny Knights Masterpiece of Yamashita Shunya: Rudy, has been scheduled for the market. Rudy is a vision, standing 250mm tall in all her 1/7 scale glory. The best news out of this official announcement? Her top is sectional… as in a section comes off. NICE! Sorry, let me tone back the enthusiasm a bit. Aoshima has done a good job putting together a nice quality PVC for this excellent sculpt. I applaud them! It'll be out this July for 6,090 yen.
Despite HobbyStock's insistence otherwise, there is only one picture on their site. If you're in for uncensored NSFW stuff, hit this AmiAmi link. I'll be posting all the SFW ones here for the cubicle-bound. Oh, and there was one other for today, but it's pretty fucking eroero, so I will just post a link and let you look it over for yourself. There's another color, but it's HobbyStock exclusive.

American Girls March 2007 Class focuses on American Girl dolls with fun activities
Whoever thinks learning about history and morals is dull hasn't met Amy Brunner and Charlotte Baron.
The two local moms have teamed up to offer unique classes centered around the popular American Girl dolls.

The first session of 'Experiences of an American Girl' began in early February and was based on the doll Samantha. It ended last week with a play, 'Actions Speak Louder Than Words,' and a dance routine. The next session, which begins tomorrow and runs until mid-May, is centered around the doll Molly. The classes, geared to girls age 6 to 11, are held on Friday afternoons at Baldwin Hall in Millersville.

Each American Girl doll is based in a different time period, and each has its own line of books and accessories. Samantha is based in 1904 and Molly is from the World War II era.

'I think it's fun,' said 8-year-old Emma House of Annapolis, who attended the first session with her Depression-era doll, Kit. 'The dance is fun to do, and it's fun to watch the people and see my friends.'

For many of the 18 girls in the class, the term 'friends' included the dolls themselves, since they are viewed by them as much more than just toys.

'I love her,' said Kelly Szalankiewicz, 8, of Glen Burnie, clutching her doll close. 'She's, like, my friend. I like to play school with her.'

Kelly said she takes the role of teacher and her doll is the student. The only drawback, said a smiling Kelly, is that her doll isn't very good at math.

The classes are an outgrowth of both Ms. Brunner's dance studio, SPARK Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, and her experiences as a mother with a daughter who loves the American Girl dolls. Ms. Baron, of Arnold, teaches ballet at SPARK, and also has a daughter who is fond of the dolls.

'We were looking for something fun and educational for our daughters to do after school,' Ms. Brunner said. 'To have 18 happy girls on a Friday - it's great.'

Ms. Brunner and Ms. Baron said the excitement of the girls, some of whom change their dolls' outfits every week, is infectious. 'I've loved it,' Ms. Baron said. 'It's all about the kids.'

While emphasizing the fun factor, the women also pack the classes with plenty of historical information and themed activities. The Samantha session, for example, featured a tea party where girls learned about manners and how they would be viewed in early 20th-century society.

Most of the girls said they loved the experience, but thought life today was a lot better and offered more opportunities.

Toys were Us but now this store has quit selling fun after 104 years - ic Wales
Toys were Us but now this store has quit selling fun after 104 years
Jan 29 2007
Sam Burson, Western Mail

IT WOULD have been hard to drag any post-war child past this shop - one of the largest toy stores in Wales in its pomp during the early 1950s. Bursting with colourful toys, the shop in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, which finally closed at the weekend after more than 100 years, is an endearing reminder of how toys were sold before the age of video games and large chain stores. Owner John Foster-Powell was finally forced to close the family store on Saturday - an especially hard decision as the 47-year-old had grown up living in the flat above and working in the store. The shop has provided everything from whips and tops to the whipper-snappers at the start of the Edwardian era, to itching powder for today's children. But competition from large chains, the advent of video games and business rate increases have made the closure inevitable, Mr Foster-Powell said. The shop, first set up in 1902, has left behind a fascinating history, and an insight into how, even though massive social changes have taken place in the century it has been in existence, children today are often as happy with the same toys as their early 20th-century predecessors.
Mr Foster-Powell, who now works as an accountant in Kent, but is planning a move back to West Wales, said, 'I was brought up above the shop until I was 19 or 20.
'I guess it's what a lot of kids dream of. I spent my early life working in the shop, so it's very sad to have to close it,.
'It was the biggest toy shop in West Wales at one stage.
'It's strange to think we were once selling hoops and sticks, and spinning tops.
'You don't really see them any more, but there are plenty of toys which have stayed basically the same for decades.
'My favourite has been Action Man, because it was my era. I liked the frogman and deep sea diver versions.'
