Wintergarden Toy Auction June 2008 Steiff Figures Command Top Prices

It was antiques in Toyland, or maybe vice versa, at Wintergarden Auction's March 15 sale of children's diverse playthings. There were some 288 lots of toys, dolls, trains, games, bicycles, and other categories. Auctioneer Frank Kapsia said most of them were from four large estate consignments, including from collector Nina Nightingale of Jaffrey, New Hampshire, two estates from Connecticut, and one from Wilbraham, Massachusetts. There were no reserves.
When the auction started, there were about 100 potential buyers in the salesroom in Memorial Hall in Monson, Massachusetts. Kapsia said more than 100 absentee bids had been received by that time.
Bidders' interest focused especially on eight lots of Steiff stuffed figures, which led the sale's price results. A cat and a mouse together in a single lot made the day's highest price at $1980 (includes buyer's premium). (A complete prices-realized list was not available, so most of the prices in this article are based on the writer's notes taken during the sale.)
There were several other Steiff lots at the top of the price list, including a 9' high blank button bear, $1870; three small rabbits, $1430; two larger rabbits, $1430; and an elephant, $1100.
Some of the wide variety of dolls in the auction attracted very strong bidding. A pair of circa 1870, 7' high painted eyes bisque-head dolls, all original and with provenance, topped out at $1210. From Germany, a 14' painted eyes character baby doll, with original box and wardrobe, sold for $852.50. As one lot, four 7' high German bisque-head painted dolls in original clothing made $660. Probably the most unusual lot in the category was an all-original sailor doll named Jimmy, 12' tall, circa 1850, with provenance indicating that it had been made by a great-great-great-grandmother for her granddaughter. It sold for $550.
Toy vehicles were scattered throughout the auction. A rare 1920's Sturditoy Trucking Company tow truck made $1980. A Structo hook and ladder fire truck topped out at $121, and a Remco U.S. Army 'Bulldog' tank brought $27.50.
A variety of games were offered in the auction, including a rare Fishing Banks by J.H. Singer, New York, at $110; The New Game of Reversi at $77; and The Blackout by Milton Bradley at $44.
Some 29 lots of toy trains came up for bids. Among them were an American Flyer O-gauge passenger train with locomotive, tender, and three cars, $176; an American Flyer O-gauge windup passenger train with engine, tender, and three cars, $110; and a Lionel #212 Marine Corps diesel engine, $82.50.
Other lots of specialized Toyland items included a Kestner doll with trunk and wardrobe at $1650; as one lot, three winter figures, two bisque-head skiers and a snow baby, at $385; and five bicycles in the $55 to $99 range.
With an April 1897 patent, an Always Did 'Spise a Mule mechanical bank went at $550.

Dec 2007 Top Five Holiday Action Figure Lines

Though many action figures are exchanged around this time of year as gifts, only a select few actually represent the holidays and holiday-related characters themselves. It’s a bit of a gamble for toy companies to produce something that is really only desirable for less than a tenth of the year, but it turns out that not only have these action figures been perennial favorites, but they also make great decorations by recreating classic holiday moments in popular culture.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (Playing Mantis/Memory Lane)

src=http://z.about.com/d/actionfigures/1/6/x/-/-/-/about---Rudolph-Yukon.jpg
Cornering the holiday special action figure market, Playing Mantis released an extremely complete series of action figures based on Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, or more specifically, the stop-motion special by Rankin-Bass. From every misfit toy under the sun to King Moonracer and the Abominable Snowman, someone who owns the complete series could easily create their own stop-motion version of the show if they wanted to. This special still gets high ratings even decades after its debut, so it’s no wonder that these are very popular holiday action figures to own.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (McFarlane Toys)
src=http://z.about.com/d/actionfigures/1/6/v/-/-/-/about---Grinch-Christmas.jpg
Forget the action figures that came out with the release of the 2000 live action movie version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey. Everybody loves the original designs by Dr. Seuss, faithfully recreated in the television special by Chuck Jones. In 2007, McFarlane Toys made action figures (though they could be more accurately described as “miniature dioramas”) based on this beloved special, and they turned out phenomenally well. If you can find them in stores this year, be sure to snatch them up, because I don’t think any toy company can improve on what McFarlane has achieved with these figures.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (Playing Mantis/Memory Lane)

src=http://z.about.com/d/actionfigures/1/6/u/-/-/-/about---CharlieBrownChristmas.jpg
As a television special, A Charlie Brown Christmas has been around for over 40 years and is considered by many to be the best animated Christmas special ever made. The figures, originally released by Playing Mantis, capture the essence of the special perfectly, from Charlie Brown’s small but real tree, Pig Pen’s dirty snowman, and even Sally’s letter to Santa. Though first released several years ago, the figures have been reissued by other toy companies since their debut in 2003, and through several different boxed sets, it’s easy to assemble your own plastic cast of Peanuts characters.

Nov 2007 Top 10 Worst Toys of 2007 - National Ledger
A consumer nonprofit group has put together a list of the top 10 Worst Toys of 2007.  It must have been a very difficult year as there have been so many toy recalls.  From lead poisoning to losing an eye, this year's list of '10 Worst Toys' by the nonprofit World Against Toys Causing Harm Inc. gives a wide range of potential hazards of some popular playthings on store shelves.
List: <b>Top</b> 10 Worst Toys of 2007
List: Top 10 Worst Toys of 2007

Millions of toys have been recalled over the past year, either for lead content or choking risk. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported there were 20 toy-related deaths in 2005, including nine children who died when they choked on balls or aspirated a toy.

***

Among the toys identified on the list as hazardous were Sticky Stones, the Rubber Band Shooter and Go Diego Go Animal Rescue Boat by Mattel's Fisher Price. In an interview with Fox News, WATCH director James Swartz said that the organization hopes that the list will fuel an information drive to help save more children's lives.

'There is a huge amount of attention and scrutiny on the toy industry right now,' said Joan Lawrence, vice president of standards and government affairs at the Toy Industry Association, a nonprofit trade group. She said it is most important that consumers 'know what the recalls are, and to be informed on how to choose safe and age-appropriate toys for their children.'

Canada Nov 2007 Testing body unveils top toy picks for 2008 - CTV.ca

A toy camera, a doll that speaks four languages and a board game that allows kids to be hockey team managers are among a list of the best toys of the year, the Canadian Toy Testing Council announced Monday.

The national testing body says its list of best toys, as chosen by kids and parents, includes the Kidizoom Camera from VTech Electronics Canada. It was chosen as the council's top pick for the best battery-operated toy of 2008, the council's executive director Leigh Poirier told a morning news conference.

The camera is similar to an adult's digital camera, but is much more durable and can withstand being repeatedly dropped.

'It is also compatible with your personal computer and the children can put their pictures and do photo editing on the television. It has got an automatic shutoff and an automatic flash and a wonderful LCD screen,' explained Poirier. 'The kids took thousands of pictures with this camera and it is absolutely fabulous.'
The non-profit Canadian Toy Testing Council has been assessing toys since 1952, judging them on the basis of design, function, durability and play value. The CTTC's panel of experts analyzes the toys, looking for those that will enhance a child's development and ability, while providing great play value.
The annual findings are provided directly to the manufacturer or distributor of the toy, to help companies understand the expectations of children and parents, and to encourage toy-makers to keep these expectations in mind when they design other toys.

Among the CTTC panel's choices of Best Bets are:
  • Playskool's Busy Ball Popper (for kids 9-36 months): This toy set includes five colourful balls and an air-driven launcher. Kids love to watch as the balls travel though the launcher while music plays then either pop out onto the tray or fly high up into the air.
  • Correspo! (for kids 2 to 7 years): The rules vary for five games that can be played with this card set, depending on your child's age and ability level. The games encourage language, counting, matching and memory skills.
  • Interactive Lia (for kids 3 years and up): This doll interacts with children in four languages. The doll talks, giggles, cries, drinks from her bottle, eats from her spoon and even uses her potty, all in French. Put one of the three included bracelets on her arm and she will do the same in English, Spanish or Italian.
  • Mattel's Mega Rig Shark Ship! ( for kids 4 years and up): This 28-piece set can be used to create 40 ships, all of which float in water or even drive on land when wheels are added. The set also contains detailed pieces including a shark, a diver, a captain, a working harpoon, a crane attachment and a shark cage.
  • Big League Hockey Manager (for kids 10 years and up): In this bilingual board game (French and English), players take on the role of General Manager of a hockey team. Each player selects their starting line-up and must manage their teams, negotiate salaries and trades and win matches against other players' teams.

UK Oct 2007 Top 10 toys for Xmas
According to Argos, which launches its new gift guide today: Meanwhile, girls will favour a new doll that sucks a dummy and reacts to voices. Get queuing, folks, so you don't miss out! 1 Transformers Movie Ultimate Bumblebee, £79.99 With advanced animatronics, lights and sound.
Our verdict: Pricey but will keep boys entertained for hours as the car eventually turns into a robot. It's quite complicated so it will last past Christmas Day. 2 In The Night Garden Blanket Time Igglepiggle, £34.99 With four interactive games plus sounds and speech. Children can squeeze the toy's tummy to sing along. Our verdict: Toddlers will adore this cute little TV character, who has a blanket in his hand but asks them where it is. Grown-ups will want one, too. 3 Girl Tech Makeover, £59.99 The camera plugs into a TV to create wild hairstyles and make-up looks. Our verdict: Older girls will love this hi-tech kit and parents won't go mad when they turn their hair pink - it's only on-screen. 4 iTeddy, £59.99 A teddy bear for the 21st century, he has a built-in media player including games, video clips and music. Additional content can be downloaded from www.iteddy.com Our verdict: A good first techno toy for the over-threes as it's easy to use and doubles as a cuddly toy. Parents can also download bedtime stories and lullabies. 5 High School Musical Gabriella and Troy gift pack, £39.99 Dolls of the two most popular characters in the hit TV movie plus clips from some of the songs. Our verdict: Troy looks outdated with his blond hair - it's now dark. And Gabrielle looks more Desperate Housewife than High School prom queen. 6 Dr Who Dalek Sec Hybrid Voice FX Mask, £29.99 With voice-changing features, speech and sound effects from the Dr Who series. Our verdict: The head straps were difficult to adjust and the tendrils dropped off after just a short play. You press a button to get an alien voice. Over-rated. 7 Rosy Doll, £19.99 Soft-bodied 65cm doll with long hair and styling accessories. Our verdict: A huggable, larger-than-average doll whose locks are perfect for styling. So cuddly, her new owner will want to take her everywhere. 8 New Baby Annabell doll, £34.47 The classic - now with improved interactivity. Our verdict: A next-generation doll that mimics a real baby. She reacts to voices, gurgles, sucks a dummy and opens and closes her eyes while she drinks. Scarily realistic.

Toys 'R' Us Sept 2007 Forecasts holiday season's top sellers

Toys 'R' Us unveiled its annual hot toy list on Thursday featuring items it expects to be among the best sellers during the holiday shopping season, the crucial time of year for the toy industry.
Last year, the plush red T.M.X. Elmo made the list and enjoyed its strongest selling period since its 1996 debut.
This year, Mattel is looking to capitalize on that success by extending the T.M.X. franchise to Sesame Street characters Cookie Monster and Ernie.
Toys 'R' Us also listed music video game Guitar Hero 3 and Jakks Pacific Inc's EyeClops as potential hot sellers.
The EyeClops is a handheld magnifying glass that lets users view almost anything at 200 times normal size on a television screen.
Guitar Hero 3 enables players to emulate rock stars by strapping on a guitar-shaped controller and playing hit songs from groups like The Rolling Stones, Guns N' Roses and the Beastie Boys.
The game will also be available on Nintendo's Wii game system for the first time.
As in recent years, the 2007 holiday toy lineup boasts a wide array of child-friendly versions of adult gadgets like MP3 players, cell phones and computers, a few of which made the Toys 'R' Us list.
LeapFrog Enterprises Inc's ClickStart My First Computer, a device that turns a television into a computer, and Hasbro Inc's Made for Me MP3 player for babies should both be in demand this Christmas, Toys 'R' Us said.
The retailer also selected Play Along's Hannah Montana In Concert Collection Doll to be one of the most highly coveted items this Christmas.
'I don't think there's going to be anything hotter than that,' independent toy industry consultant Christopher Byrne said of the doll, which is based on the Disney Channel TV series.
'One of the hottest licenses out there is going to be Hannah Montana.'
Following is the Toys 'R' Us 'Fabulous 15' list of hot new toys for the 2007 holiday season:
* Aqua Dots Super Studio from Spin Master
* Clickstart My First Computer from LeapFrog
* Daisy Pocket Mod from Razor
* EyeClops from Jakks Pacific

Sept 2007 Julia’s Sale Exceeds $1 Million For Top-Shelf Toys & Dolls - Antiques and the Arts Online
James D. Julia's June 22–23 auction showed such strong competition among bidders for the more than 500 diverse lots of antique toys, dolls, advertising and coin-op that those in attendance were aghast by how high the bids were reaching. When the final hammer dropped, the sale realized more than $1.1 million, more than 46 percent above the firm's preauction estimate of approximately $750,000.

One of the centerpieces of the auction was a rare cast iron Arcade armored car made for Brinks in the 1930s that was likely never offered commercially but made specifically for the Brinks firm.
Arcade's trucks normally had a tin bottom, but to suggest the greater security of the actual trucks, this truck was made with a cast iron bottom, featured gun turrets and was embossed with the Brinks logo in gold on the sides. One of only three or four known to exist, it sold for $34,500. A rarely seen Coca-Cola three-dimensional display depicting a revolving door looking into a circa 1940s diner, found in a log storage bin in Little Rock, Ark., sold for a record $40,250.

Though bargains were few and far between at this sale, a few pieces slipped through the cracks and gave bidders a brief reprieve. One such bargain was a highly anticipated Wilkins tedder. One of only five or six known, it is perhaps the scarcest of all Wilkins toys. The toy with its intricate mechanism moving the rear arms to churn the hay saw active bidding up to $6,325. A surprise following this lot — and helping to complete the four-piece farm set — was a Wilkins horse-drawn plow. In very good condition, its recast plow was evidently forgivable as it climbed to $5,175.

German toys made a strong showing. A Steiff Felix the Cat on an Irish mail cart was a hit, bringing $10,350. The largest Marklin Brougham ever produced, spanning a 44 inches long, and including its original hollow-bodied tin horse, sold for a solid $24,150.
A variety of pressed steel offered some fresh-to-the-market pieces. From one collection rich in Buddy L trucks came a rare coal truck with door in near excellent condition, which sold for $6,325.
A selection of dolls was also offered, culled from collections and estates from across the United States. Among the many subcategories was the increasingly popular Chinese Door of Hope dolls.

First created in the early 1900s, the dolls were a result of American missionaries wanting to help young Chinese women establish marketable skills. A rare policeman with tasseled pointed cap sold for $5,175, while a 6-inch Door of Hope kindergarten child brought $4,025.

Wave Nov 2007 Noriko from Top wo Nerae 1/10 & Motoko from GitS: SAC 1/10

Ok, I'm going to do this one all quick like since the figures are lame, but someone might like them. First up is Noriko from Top wo Nerae! If you don't know what that is, then I hate you. She's sort of boring, she's small as hell, and she'll cost you 3,990 yen this November.
Likewise, this 1/10 scale Motoko from GitS: SAC. Hair looks of shit, boobs are ok, face sucks, paint is cheap. Yeah. That about covers it. Somehow WAVE thinks it's ok to charge 5,040 yen for this thing in November. Please explain that to me? Someone? I'm not crazy, right? This figure DOES suck?

Hasbro 2007 Top 5 Transformers - Cinema Blend
Here are the Top 5 Generation 1 Transformers:

BUMBLEBEE (1984)
Allegiance: Autobot
Vehicle form: Volkswagen Beetle

There are a few truths that the Transformers touched upon during the 80s. One was that you do not mess with Optimus Prime because he will own your ass. The other is that a boy and his car is a special bond, and while I was too young then to understand it I did love this little yellow bug. Maybe it was because he was my first, but I always found Bumblebee to be one of the easier Transformers to move from robot to vehicle mode.

Bumblebee’s character also appealed to me as a fan of the show. He was the one with a wise crack at any moment he could slip one in. For his smaller size he was also a fairly bad ass fighter and spy. Bumblebee would do everything, include put his life in jeopardy, to save his friends or complete a mission. The chosen friend of Spike Witwicky and loyal comrade of Optimus Prime is probably the number 1 reason I stayed a fan for so many years.

IRONHIDE (1984)
Allegiance: Autobot
Vehicle Form: Red Nissan Van

If Bumblebee is the funny loyal little guy, then Ironhide is the loyal military commander. Essentially Ironhide is quite similar to Bumblebee, just with a few different quirks. I’ll admit that my putting him on the list has less to do with my love of the toy than with the cartoon series. But the toys became more than silly little pieces of metal and plastic with the characters brought to life on my television. Plus, I’m sure my parents thought that a nice van was a sensible vehicle for a protector to have.

Ironhide was Optium Prime’s bodyguard and military advisor. Which tells you just how much he could kick ass. Ironhide is one of Optimus’ oldest friends, and while he doesn’t share completely with his friend’s love of humans he does respect it. In fact, Ironhide is often seen taking his free time with the humans he protects. But let’s be honest, it was the cowboy attitude all of us really liked about Ironhide. I honestly only put him into vehicle form when I needed to put him away.

STARSCREAM (1984)
Allegiance: Decepticon
Vehicle Form: F-15 Eagle

Most of the time I kept Starscream in jet form because he was often involved in aerial battles with my GI Joes. He was by far the best of the Decepticons. Starscream thought he was better than everyone else, including Megatron. I’m pretty sure that he and Megatron had more battles than Megatron and Optimus Prime. Of course, while Starscream was a coward and would run away during a fight he was also very good at his job. The treacherous Decepticon had the most distinct voice aside from Optimus in the series. My poor imitation of it as a child probably drove my parents crazy on a nightly basis.

OPTIMUS PRIME (1984)
Allegiance: Autobot leader
Vehicle Fun: Flat nosed cab over semi-truck

OK, I never owned an Optimus action figure. But that’s where friends come in, right? As a figure he was fairly cool, but honestly I just never cared too much for the whole truck thing. In the cartoon series, and the new movie, Optimus Prime is pure awesome. But I never quite had the same feeling when I held the toy as I did with Bumblebee or Starscream.

Top Action Figure Surprises from the 2007 Toy Fair

Here are several product announcements which were kept secret until (or just before) the 2007 American International Toy Fair: things which may have surprised action figure collectors.

1) No New Hasbro Marvel Legends Were Shown
This was perhaps the biggest action figure disappointment in recent years: Hasbro did not exhibit any new Marvel Legends action figures. Various web sites have reported differing reasons for this, including that ToyFare Magazine will be debuting the new figures or that the new figures will be unveiled at the 2007 New York Comic Con.

2) DC Unlimited
DC Comics has their DC Direct brand for releasing action figures and collectibles based on DC characters. So what happens when DC Direct wants to branch out and create items based on non-DC properties? Create a new brand, of course! The first two licenses under the aptly-named DC Unlimited name are World of Warcraft and Afro Samurai.

3) DC Direct: AME-COMI Heroine Action Figures
DC Direct thrilled collectors of female action figures with this product line: women characters from the DC Comics universe, sculpted in an anime style. Best of all? These are not imports, so hopefully the price point will be in line with regular DC Direct action figures. Catwoman, Batgirl, Supergirl, and Power Girl were on display as completed sculpts, with several other characters shown as concept art on a poster in the DC showroom.

4) LEGO Ultimate Collector's Millennium Falcon
It was no surprise that LEGO would unveil a very large Star Wars set at Toy Fair; you may recall the Death Star set from 2006. The surprise this time was that the set is actually scaled to (and includes) LEGO mini-figures. This set has more than 5,000 pieces and is nearly three feet long and almost two feet wide.

5) DC Battleague: Battle Figure Game
I know, I know, you already have a large collection of DC HeroClix pieces from WizKids... but DC Battleague pieces from Mattel are larger (about 3 inches tall) and were sculpted by the Four Horsemen. Surely you have enough love in your heart, and room in your collection, for two figural games based on the DC Universe?

6) Retro Star Trek Action Figures
Diamond Select Toys will be releasing Star Trek action figures in the Mego style from the 1970s. These figures will have cloth outfits and will use the same sculpts/molds as the original Mego Star Trek figures. This was announced before Toy Fair, but has collectors so delighted that it still earns a place on this list.

7) Flash Gordon Action Figures
Collectors knew that new toy company Bif Bang Pow! was going to be showing toys based on The Big Lebowski, but the Flash Gordon goodies (from the 1980 film) were a nice blast from the past. In addition to action figures, there will be bobbleheads and plush toys.

8) Funkeys Figures
At first glance, Mattel's new Funkeys are 'just' cute little urban vinyl figures, but each of the 40+ figures comes with a code to unlock a new 'zone' on your computer. The starter set for Funkeys includes software to install the Funky world on your computer, and then each additional figure you collect will gain you access to more of that world.

CES Jan 2007 - Top ten weirdest gadgets - Reg Hardware

CES 2007 This year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has been quiet, very quiet. However the absence of mega announcements from Microsoft, Sony et al has left space open for some of the smaller, quirkier manufacturers to grab their share of their limelight. Here then, much more fun than an LG Blu-ray/HD DVD player, are the ten best things we have seen at Vegas so far...
1 iRobot Create From the company that brought you the Roomba vacuum cleaner comes a robot designed for students, geeks and other 'bot lovers to create their own programmes. See it in action here fetching beer from the fridge or even being controlled by a hamster. Genius.
2 Elvis bot From Wowee, the company best known for the Robosapien, comes the Elvis bot. It's a kind of a triple peanut butter and jelly sandwich take on that singing fish from a few years back. It delivers all your fave King classic and, courtesy of its accompanying mic, you can even sing along too. They also have a robot panda too.

3 Hasbro/Creative MP3 players Creative has a new strategy in its never ending battle with the mighty Apple. And that's to catch them young, really young. At CES it has a range of prototype products called Playskool which are basically cuddly toys kitted out with music players. There's even a baby gym. Scary stuff.
4 Eclipse Solar Gear briefcase Clever idea this: it's a briefcase with a built in solar charger. Basically, you leave it basking in the sun for a bit and when you are good to go it delivers extra power for your laptop.
5 Behringer iAXE393 USB guitar Here's a way of ensuring all those Hendrix-esque guitar blow-outs are stored forever. The nattily named iAXE393 hooks up to a PC via USB so you can record your fantastic fretmeistership on your hard drive. It comes with software to make you sound professional too and best of all cost just $99.
6 R2-D2 Mobile Entertainment system Yes, your pint-size Star Wars droid can now play radio, CD, MP3, WMA and most other music formats, project DVDs, games and photos onto your wall or ceiling and move around the floor. Coming to the UK in the summer where it will retail for £1,500. Phew. See him in action here.
7 Belkin's TuneStudio for iPod - Smart little gadget that basically acts as a mixer for your Apple player. Available for the 5G iPod, the four-channel audio mixer that lets you create digital recordings directly onto your iPod, with inputs for up to four different instruments or audio sources. Hook up, play, twiddle the knobs to get the right settings, then sit back and enjoy your efforts.
8 JVC GZ-HD7 Everio HD camcorder This is the camcorder we've always wanted. Its captures high def (1080p no less) footage which is then stored on its 60 Gigabyte hard drive. Apparently you can store five hours of your kids, animals and local football matches in HD before the disk fills up. Due in the UK in late spring for around £1,000.
