Mezco Toyz Aug 2007 at SDCC 07

Mezco Toyz is actually a bold little toy company that I have a lot of respect for (and no, not just because they have Public Enemy figures!). They really do make some great toys of popular media properties running the full range from movies, to television, and to music.
Not really a whole lot to say about them other than to show the pics, so let's get right to it!

Mezco Toyz - Barbie can't touch this!

It was Hoodz that got Andrew Yasgar into urban toys four years ago. Yasgar, who lives in New Haven, Conn., had long been a collector of Star Wars, Kiss, and Micronaut action figures. Then, while flipping through a magazine, he saw an advertisement for Hoodz, vinyl figurines that carry cans of spray paint and other graffiti paraphernalia.
Yasgar bought the Hoodz characters and soon began collecting more figures inspired by hip-hop culture: tiny replicas of Biz Markie and Run-DMC; dolls clad in hoodies, Timberland boots, or Adidas sneakers, created by the artist Michael Lau.
Such hip-hop-flavored toys are a niche category in the burgeoning genre collectors call urban vinyl, urban toys, or designer toys. Just don't call them 'dolls' in front of these adult collectors.
'People don't like it to be referred to as 1/8dolls 3/8, because they're so much more now,' says Yasgar, 36, a father of three whose collection totals almost 200 toys, about three-quarters of them hip-hop-inspired. 'It's become art. The people designing these are fine artists and have gallery shows.' Lau, one of the major figures in the designer-toy movement, draws crowds when he sells his limited-edition dolls at his gallery space in Hong Kong.
A small but growing number of these toys are filtering into the urban vinyl mix. The hip-hop figures not only satisfy a yearning for the golden era of the music, they build off their fans' love of collecting.
These days, fans can buy urban vinyl in the image of Notorious B.I.G., Run-DMC, and Public Enemy. Kidrobot, one of the first American businesses to dabble in the genre, offers toy versions of the music group Gorillaz, Lau's collectible pieces, and other toys designed by artists. Trolling the Web, collectors can encounter individual entrepreneurs such as Roy Miles, the self-described 'Ghetto Geppetto,' who sells his B.I.T.D.Z., miniature versions of imaginary rap characters, at biddies.us. Yasgar, a graffiti artist who got his degree at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, showcases the toys he's designed for Kidrobot and other urban vinyl companies on his website, sket-one.com.
Many of these toys cost well under $50. 'It's like affordable art, you know,' says Paul Budnitz , founder and president of Kidrobot, which began selling urban toys in 2002 on the Internet (kidrobot.com ) and now has stores in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. 'Once you get into it, you can afford to keep in it.'
But prices can easily go above $100, and the resale value of limited-edition toys can climb even higher. A new designer toy in the image of Ghostface Killah (offered at theghostfacedoll.com ) comes with a $500 price tag - or $600 if the buyer chooses to invest in a miniature version of Ghostface's signature gold eagle bracelet for the doll.
The artist-driven designer-toy movement started in Asia and has become increasingly popular in the United States. The people creating the designs, which are often limited editions, look to graffiti art and pop culture for inspiration. Michael Markowitz, owner of Mezco Toyz, which produces the Notorious B.I.G., Run-DMC, and Public Enemy figures, discovered the movement while traveling to Hong Kong and China, where he got a chance to see what such artists as Lau, Eric So, and others were doing.
'It was almost like urban style meets fashion doll meets something that's acceptable for a male customer,' says Markowitz, whose nickname is 'Mez.' 'Not a ... Barbie, something that had a cool style to it with fashion. When I saw what they were doing I put my own twist on it.'
He began by launching the Hoodz collection in 2002. His website, mezcotoyz.com, now sells three versions of the Notorious B.I.G. doll, dressed in a white suit, jeans, and a pants/jacket ensemble, for $26 each.
