Mezco July 2009 Releases a Freddy Krueger with Style!

Mezco Releases a Freddy Krueger with Style!

Mezco Toyz takes yet another swing at everybody's favorite teenager-killing boiler-room worker with their new stylized version of A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger. As if the razor-fingered burn victim wasn't creepy enough, Mezco took it several steps further by introducing a new, and truly inspired, stylized sculpt to the figure, making it look like they took Wes Craven's most frightening horror movie franchise and ran it through a distorted Alice in Wonderland filter. And I mean that in a good way.
Here's the brief description given by Mezco:
'Mezco gives Freddy the stylized treatment and creates and instant classic. Standing 9 inches tall he features 8 points of articulation. Freddy comes complete with a scale Elm Street sign, a removable cloth sweater and hat, and the infamous tongue phone.'

First of all, I find myself wondering why on this good, green Earth would anyone want to take his shirt off. And secondly, if you're on the fence as to whether or not you want to add this figure to your collection, I ask you; How many of your other action figures come with a tongue phone? Yeah, that's what I thought.
The Stylized Freddy Krueger action figure is available for pre-order at www.mezcotoyz.com.

A Pint-Sized Look at Homeless Michael Myers
Source:Rob Zombie
June 11, 2009

This morning, Rob Zombie posted this look at what he's calling 'homeless Michael Myers' in action figure form. As we reported earlier, Mezco acquired collectible rights to the upcoming Halloween 2, which hits theaters on August 28th. The figure gives you an idea of what ol' Mikey (once again played by Tyler Mane) has been wearing in the two years since we last saw him get plugged by Laurie Strode in Halloween.

Mezco June 2009 Hellboy 2 BPRD Buddies

Hellboy II “B.P.R.D. Buddies” (Mezco Toyz) — The crew at Mezco is all kinds of awesome. After sending me a “Cyrus” action figure a while back from their line of figures based on “The Warriors,” I received this set of “B.P.R.D. Buddies” earlier this week. They’re basically kid-friendly toys based on characters from “Hellboy II,” and this particular package contains Prince Nuada and one of my favorite characters from the film, the giant cave troll called Wink. They’re so cute, it’s almost easy to forget that they’re based on characters who tried to subjugate all of humanity under their magical rule… almost.

Mezco June 2008 Auctioning 'Heroes' prototype figures for charity
Mezco Toyz, premier toy and collectible manufacturer, is lending a helping hand to those who are less fortunate; bulldogs. In February 2008, Mezco Toyz, the makers of the new Heroes action figures, sent a set of unpainted prototype test shot figures to the legendary 30 Rock (30 Rockefeller center) in NY to be displayed at NBC's headquarters as part of the NBC tour. {NOTE: If your publication covered the February 7, 2008 event you may want to include a link to your coverage here.} Literally thousands of tourists have posed beside the figures for pictures and many of the cast of Heroes themselves saw and played with the figures during a recent visit to the site. These are the actual figures from the display and the actual figures featured in the recent article in Heroes Magazine. The original plan was to auction the figures for charity in April, but because of the overwhelming popularity of the display, the figures remained at NBC until the end of May 2008. Now, Mezco Toyz has donated the set of 5 figures to Heaven Sent Bulldog Rescue so they can be auction to raise funds for abused and/or homeless Bulldogs. 100% of the money raised will be donated to the charity and the transaction will be handled by Mission Fish. src=http://www.comicbookresources.com/assets/images/articles/1213125530.jpg When asked what prompted their decision to help bulldogs, Mezco's Director Of Special Projects replied, 'Mezco has a long love affair with bulldogs. A full 37% of Mezco's New York staff own bulldogs and Mez himself, the President of Mezco, has shared his life with several bulldogs. When Mezco learned about the cruelty many of these poor creatures have suffered, and the wondrous things Heaven Sent Bulldog Rescue has done to help them, it was clear that they deserved to benefit from this auction'. The auction begins on June 4th, 2008 and runs for 10 days. The e-Bay item # is 180250494487

Mezco & AFI Oct 2007 GOLD Cinema of FEAR contest! - Action Figure Insider
AFI/Mezco GOLD Cinema of FEAR contest!
Action Figure Insider - Best Toy News on the Web! -

Lots of other websites have costume contests this time of year.  Dress up, send your pictures in, win a prize.  You know the drill.  But we’re going to do things a little different.   We want you to dress up your ACTION FIGURES in their Halloween costumes and send us the pictures.
In celebration of their new CINEMA OF FEAR line, Mezco has made a small run of figures in solid colors, to be given away as prizes from websites and publications.  AFI is proud to partner with Mezco in giving away a set of GOLD series 1 figures.   Here are the prizes:
src=http://actionfigureinsider.com/main/wp-content/uploads/2007_3/<bMEZCOchoptopgold1.jpg width=111 > src=http://actionfigureinsider.com/main/wp-content/uploads/2007_3/<bMEZCOfreddygold1.jpg width=143 >src=http://actionfigureinsider.com/main/wp-content/uploads/2007_3/<bMEZCOjasongold1.jpg width=107 >src=http://actionfigureinsider.com/main/wp-content/uploads/2007_3/<bMezcoLFgold1.jpg width=120 >

So here is how the contest will work:
  1. Pick a figure from your collection and dress IT in a Halloween costume.   It can be as small as a Mez-it on up to an 18' figure.  We just want it in a costume OTHER what they would normally wear.
  2. Take a picture of it.  Each person can submit up TWO pictures of a figure in a costume. (so pick your favorite 2!)
  3. Send your name, mailing address, AFI forum name (that’s right.  You need to be a forum member with at least 5 posts.  If you need to sign up for the forum click here. Now get posting!) and the picture(s) to the following address:   contest@actionfigureinsider.com
  4. ALL entries MUST be received by Sunday November 18th at midnight PST.
  5. Winners will be chosen and notified  by  November 30th.  Prizes will be mailed out shortly thereafter.

Be creative! Be funny!  Be different!  We don’t want to just see some figure repainted.  We want to see a figure, wearing a costume!

Mezco Sept 2007 Discussing Heroes Figures

We had a chance to sit down with Mezco Toyz's president Mez to talk about their upcoming line of action figures based on the hit NBC television series, Heroes. See what he had to say:
TNI: The initial press release said that you would be doing figures that range in scale from 3” – 18”. Can you tell us how many different scales we can expect to see and what scales will actually be used?
Mez: We are extremely excited about the opportunity to work on Heroes- it's an amazing property. Since we are so stoked, we are going to roll out several scales of product:
+ 7' articulated figures with accessories

+ 3 & 3/4' scale 'screen Grabs' - These are our mini diorama collectible that allow consumers to collect a scene from the show with out having to find a bigger home.
+ Deluxe figures- These are still being worked out, but I can tell you the scale will be bigger & the detail will be amazing.
TNI: Will the figures be sculpted in a stylized look like was used with your Scarface figures, or will they be done in a realistic style?
Mez: All our current planned Heroes product is going to focus on a realistic presentation to best translate the show. If we were to move to a more design driven direction, we would focus on the comic style art that exists.
TNI: What kind of articulation can we expect to see on these figures?
Mez: Some of this is still being worked out. For the 7' figures, it depends on the character but no less then 8 points per figure I believe. The Screen Grabs are not articulated by design. The deluxe figures, I can not answer at this time.
TNI: Will you only be making figures based on characters from season 1, or will you be able to do cast members from season 2 as well?
Mez: We are starting with season 1.

Mezco Toyz Aug 2007 at SDCC 07

Mezco Toyz is actually a bold little toy company that I have a lot of respect for (and no, not just because they have Public Enemy figures!). They really do make some great toys of popular media properties running the full range from movies, to television, and to music.
Not really a whole lot to say about them other than to show the pics, so let's get right to it!

South Park Deluxe Talking Jimmy Action Figure
Did you hear about this? Jimmy is the new kid in Stan, Cartman, Kenny and Butters Mountain Scout Troop. He likes to be called 'Handi-Capable'. Jimmy ends up outshining the beloved Timmy, also disabled, with his stand up comic routine while Timmy shows him a thing or two about kicking ass. Sayings include:
1. 'You know, people sometimes ask me, 'Are you angry at God for making disabled people?' I say, 'No! I think the world is better with Puh- President Bush.'

2. 'Down like a clown Charlie Br-Br. Down like a clown Charlie Bra- Braah. Down like a clown Charlie Baah Baah. Down Like a clown Charlie Br- Brown.'
3. 'Why did the p-pigeon cross the road? Cause he was having sex with the chihi... Because he was having sex with the chihi... Because he was having sex with the ch-ch-ch-ch-chihi... he was having sex with the chicken!'

5. 'Who would take a dump in the urinal. It's such a senseless crime.'
6. 'Uh, Wha-what's the matter fellas,…Are you n-ninjas, or p-p-puh-puh-pussies?'

Mezco March 2007 King Kong Figure Accepted Into The Museum Of Moving Image
Fri 9 Mar 2007

Left, Mike Drake- <b>Mezco</b> Director Of Special Projects, Right, Natalia Fidelhotz- Registar Of The Museum of the Moving ImageMezcoKong.jpg width=290 align=right >New York- A Mugwump stares forlornly from the ceiling, Kid Dy-No-Mite! wears a plastics smile, and a vintage stuffed Bugs Bunny stands proudly in a huge showcase. That was the scene Wednesday at The Museum Of The Moving Image as they accepted the prototype for Mezco’s King Kong action figure into their permanent collection.

'Toymaking is an often under appreciated art form' said Mike 'Mez' Markowitz, President Of Mezco Toyz, 'and I find it very gratifying that The Museum Of The Moving Image not only honors the industry with their amazingly extensive collection of film and television related toys, but also that they are accepting Mezco’s King Kong prototype into their memorabilia collection. Often, prototypes are destroyed in the toy making process, and the few that survive usually  end up in the hands of private collectors. For Mezco’s King Kong to be given a permanent place in the museum, where it will be displayed for generations of fans to admire, among not only so many other great toys but with such amazing movie props as ships from Star Wars and F/X items from Dick Smith, is truly a honor'.

Mezco is also in talks with the Museum Of The Moving Image to supply them with prototypes from their Family Guy and South Park lines as well.

Mezco Toyz - Barbie can't touch this!

It was Hoodz that got Andrew Yasgar into urban toys four years ago. Yasgar, who lives in New Haven, Conn., had long been a collector of Star Wars, Kiss, and Micronaut action figures. Then, while flipping through a magazine, he saw an advertisement for Hoodz, vinyl figurines that carry cans of spray paint and other graffiti paraphernalia.
Yasgar bought the Hoodz characters and soon began collecting more figures inspired by hip-hop culture: tiny replicas of Biz Markie and Run-DMC; dolls clad in hoodies, Timberland boots, or Adidas sneakers, created by the artist Michael Lau.
Such hip-hop-flavored toys are a niche category in the burgeoning genre collectors call urban vinyl, urban toys, or designer toys. Just don't call them 'dolls' in front of these adult collectors.
'People don't like it to be referred to as 1/8dolls 3/8, because they're so much more now,' says Yasgar, 36, a father of three whose collection totals almost 200 toys, about three-quarters of them hip-hop-inspired. 'It's become art. The people designing these are fine artists and have gallery shows.' Lau, one of the major figures in the designer-toy movement, draws crowds when he sells his limited-edition dolls at his gallery space in Hong Kong.
A small but growing number of these toys are filtering into the urban vinyl mix. The hip-hop figures not only satisfy a yearning for the golden era of the music, they build off their fans' love of collecting.
These days, fans can buy urban vinyl in the image of Notorious B.I.G., Run-DMC, and Public Enemy. Kidrobot, one of the first American businesses to dabble in the genre, offers toy versions of the music group Gorillaz, Lau's collectible pieces, and other toys designed by artists. Trolling the Web, collectors can encounter individual entrepreneurs such as Roy Miles, the self-described 'Ghetto Geppetto,' who sells his B.I.T.D.Z., miniature versions of imaginary rap characters, at biddies.us. Yasgar, a graffiti artist who got his degree at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, showcases the toys he's designed for Kidrobot and other urban vinyl companies on his website, sket-one.com.
Many of these toys cost well under $50. 'It's like affordable art, you know,' says Paul Budnitz , founder and president of Kidrobot, which began selling urban toys in 2002 on the Internet (kidrobot.com ) and now has stores in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. 'Once you get into it, you can afford to keep in it.'
But prices can easily go above $100, and the resale value of limited-edition toys can climb even higher. A new designer toy in the image of Ghostface Killah (offered at theghostfacedoll.com ) comes with a $500 price tag - or $600 if the buyer chooses to invest in a miniature version of Ghostface's signature gold eagle bracelet for the doll.
The artist-driven designer-toy movement started in Asia and has become increasingly popular in the United States. The people creating the designs, which are often limited editions, look to graffiti art and pop culture for inspiration. Michael Markowitz, owner of Mezco Toyz, which produces the Notorious B.I.G., Run-DMC, and Public Enemy figures, discovered the movement while traveling to Hong Kong and China, where he got a chance to see what such artists as Lau, Eric So, and others were doing.
'It was almost like urban style meets fashion doll meets something that's acceptable for a male customer,' says Markowitz, whose nickname is 'Mez.' 'Not a ... Barbie, something that had a cool style to it with fashion. When I saw what they were doing I put my own twist on it.'
He began by launching the Hoodz collection in 2002. His website, mezcotoyz.com, now sells three versions of the Notorious B.I.G. doll, dressed in a white suit, jeans, and a pants/jacket ensemble, for $26 each.
