Interview with Rita & Ed Uhl
I had the opportunity to email some questions to Rita & Ed Uhl, the creators of these creepy kiddies, and here those questions and answers!
TG-How long have you been doing this? Rita:We have been doing these since May 2002TG-How did you get into the business? Rita:I was doing something called "reborning". That's when you make a regular doll look real. Ed said he could do it too, but since his talent was in the horror genre, I told him to try a Rosemary's Baby type doll. We put it on ebay, to see if there was a market and it turned out that there certainly was!TG-What gave you the idea for the dolls? Rita:The combination of my portrait art background and Ed's horror/fantasy art background added to my addiction to dolls sparked the first Kiddie.
TG-Have you a second series coming? Ed: We are currently working with our factory contact in Hong Kong on the 2005 series dolls.
TG-Who designs them? Ed: We both do. I give them most of their "demented" influence, while Rita likes to make them "cuter than hell".
TG-How did you get them into Spencer's? Rita: We sent them a link to our website, and they called us months later to set up a meeting. We took about 12 dolls to them, and needless to say, they were intrigued and amazed. They have been extremely supportive and great to work with.
TG-Will they be available in other stores?Ed: We have an exclusive contract with Spencer's for as long as they wish to carry them. We are currently looking into Europian distribution, though.
TG-Where are you located? Rita: We make our handmade one of a kind originals in our basement studio. The mass produced Kiddies are done overseas, of course.Well, there's a little bit of background on the makers of these dolls. I like them. They call out to the darker side of me. I will continue to keep in contact with Rita & Ed to see what transpires next with the Krypt Kiddies.
